420 Main Street Building (Old National Bank) - Controlled Demolition, Inc.
Ғылым және технология
Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Renascent, Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana) performs the preparation for and explosives felling of one (1), 166,300 square foot, 19-story, reinforced concrete office building in Evansville, Indiana on Sunday, November 21, 2021. Renascent, working for General Contractor, Barton Malow, who represented the developer, DOMO Development Company, LLC, performed environmental remediation in the structure before soft stripping the building and gutting out CDI’s specified shot floors. Renascent placed debris to support the two (2) street side basement walls which had not been designed as free-standing retaining walls. They installed cables on multiple floors of the structure, per CDI’s design, so that CDI could pull the tower away from those basement walls to remain and adjacent streets/structures.
Vibration monitoring of CDI’s felling of the 18,000-ton structure demonstrated vibration levels well below regulatory guidelines.

Hearing that bell in the end just makes it better!
Not surprised a huge local bank building would become an albatross. I was a bank teller in 1972-1975 and the changes since then with computers and modern tech are astonishing.
What truly blows my mind is how a building that cost tens of millions of dollars to build can become so worthless in only a few decades that the best option is to have it demolished...

Though the same and its not the land that has a lot value since there seems to be a parking lot next to it. In Europe a building like this would get stripped and rebuilt around the structure for a new use. But I guess you have more than enough resources and building materials in the US.

@@davidemmyg Engineered obsolescence is a result of the post WW2 manufacturing boom where mass production of supply started to exceed demand. The Old National Bank building demolition should have been avoided, if for nothing else than its iconic status to Evansville. It was poorly maintained in a way that drastically decreased its lifespan, not its potential. It had the potential of lasting another fifty years.
After following CDI’s work for the past 10 years, this was the first time I have witnessed one of their implosions live in person, and it was truly a tremendous sight to behold, and definitely crossed an item off my bucket list. 420 Main was the icon of Evansville’s skyline for many years, and I will miss it tremendously. That being said, it was great to see it receive a fitting and thrilling send off. Excellent work as always, CDI!
The drone perspective is absolutely outstanding! Flying the drone through various floors, rooms, and offices brings a renewed respect for the job at hand. I hope we’ll see even more drone views on future videos. Great video and visual display of precise demolition!!
hard not to feel a twinge of sadness - this was probably considered state of the art when it was built. most people find this style of architecture to be ugly, but there's beauty to be found in it - simplicity of its minimalist/modernist design patterns, and the quality of materials. was also half the skyline of evansville - lol
The building behind it looks to be 100 years old. Probably watched the demolished building being built. If only it could talk.
I’m always astounded by the fact you can have a skyscraper which 10 seconds later, barely fills it’s own basement. Beautifully done, Loizeaux Group. As always.
The tolling of the bells as the building is felled. Great touch.
Beautiful. I'd like to see a drone shot just a few feet above the top of the building looking down as it's imploded...
That has to be a '70's building. Ridiculously short life for such a structure.

This place looked like it was less than 50 years old.
Perfect timing with those church bells afterwards 👌🏻
I'm sure the tolling bell was not timed for, but it made for a wonderful happenstance indeed! You are the true masters of the art of demolition. Beautiful choice of music, and the footage is as fine as your work!
420 is about right as that old bank went down *smokin'!*
It blowed up real good!
Why was the building destroyed? It looks like a very nice modern building.
time and time again, i watch these and i am amazed that your group can consistently make these buildings land within their own footprint, That takes skill

More precisely a long education and good mathematical calculations.
That building was a pretty good example of mid 20th century modern architecture. It's a shame it couldn't be repurposed. It could have been converted to a fantastic high end residential tower right downtown. It was also a well built, expensive building when new. Structural concrete frame, white marble cladding on the outside...no cheap materials. As an Architect it saddens me to see some of these buildings go, knowing the great effort it takes to design and build a building, and 10 seconds to destroy it. There are plenty of terrible buildings that should be demo'd, but cities should try and save the good ones that are a positive contribution to their skylines.
I've watched this multiple times just for the interior drone footage at the beginning and all the various angles of the explosion, and the timing of the bell chime is just perfect!
Evansville, Indiana, an amazing railroad town that started in the early days of the New York, Chicago and Saint Louis Railroad (NYC&STL) "The Nickel Plate Road", that later merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W), which itself in 1982 merged with the Southern Railway (SR), creating the Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation (NS). The NS still serves Evansville today.
For whom does the bell toll.. Perfect timing.
I like the way it falls in upon it's own footprint, and very little lands outside of the demo area.

That's by design (by placing explosives in strategic locations to bring it down at a certain angle or direction.) So fascinating!
Amazing accuracy dropping a building like this, these guys are so good at what they do.
Best produced CDI video I think I've seen 🙂

The interior shots at the beginning were great!! Wish there was a schedule of your upcoming jobs. Would love to see one in person. Evansville is only a couple of hours from me and would have made the drive over had I known.

It was a big day when the executive got that corner office . And think of all the pots of coffee that were made and cops brought by secretaries to their bosses all the office romances that happened , it was the plan of Manny a young lady to go to work in an office and land a husband

Probably why they don’t list it! The last thing they probably want is a crowd! Would have been cool to see live though!
Your quality demolition is second to none. 👍🏼👍🏼
I love your videos so much! The inside perspective is amazing, the sound of the countdown and perfectly timed blasts, everyone cheering afterwards.. It is cathartic... I appreciate the dedication of the work and knowledge held by everyone involved by the company. The structures falling is a bonus!
When work becomes art.
This was great! I was hoping there was going to be video from inside during the implosion. The engineering that goes into bringing such tall buildings down within their own footprint is absolutely astounding.
Your videos continue to get better production wise...Thank you for sharing with us!
Awesome Video, But sad to see, I remember seeing it being built when I was a kid being with my Mom when she went shopping downtown 1968-70
Excellent execution! Truly a very high skill set. Amazing! Wow! Thanks for sharing through YT videos!
You guys make it look so easy!... It looked nice and clean... Job well done!
I lived near that family when I lived in Towson Maryland great family
Well done!!
Love the interior drone shots. Great job.
the bell tolling right as it fell was nicely timed
Completed in 1971, at 18 stories it was the tallest building in Evansville, Indiana, and for 120 miles. It will be replaced by a four story retail/apartment complex. Earlier plans that would have renovated the existing building for retail/apartment use fell through as uneconomic.
I thought it was interesting in the first shot of the building coming down and in a later shot that a lone church bell started ringing almost as if to morn the passing of the building coming down. Great work as always, CDI. I was in person when CDI took down the Century Link Building in Overland Park, KS.
Sad. My father set the verticals on the exterior. Sat on the edge and guided them in place by hand.
My University of KZread degree has prepared me for this evaluation -- I declare it, nicely done! 🤠
Wow! I was there at the grand opening when they dropped balloons with prize certificates inside. Its wild to see it come down...and a reminder of just how old I am.

What year did this building open?
You guys are engineers and artists.
Yeehaw! A different Indiana courthouse in the background and with the same bell tone as our similar courthouse. Kinda brings it home. I was wondering if CDI was to take on 420 Main, yep and in style! The master blasters! Interesting seeing shipping containers stacked 3 high to protect glass storefronts just across the street from the high rise. I am wondering how effective that prep was.
Fantastic Cinematic shots paired with another beautiful demolition. Amazing.
Perhaps in another few decades these demolition videos will become old hat, but at present they are beautiful illustrations of modern tech at work. Wonderful to see ! Many thanks, CDI !
It says something that I am getting old when buildings that look relaively new to me are being demolished.
I really love your videos, especially the footage inside the buildings.
I think this is a beautiful Mid-Century building. Why on earth was it destroyed.
This production and execution is fantastic! Awesome feat and precision work on such a big project!!
Excellent video on great demolition, thx.

Church bell with the perfect timing
Building demolition has become fine art short film. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome video - the building imploded and squatted down on itself - the solitary bell tolling at the end makes for a most excellent tribute to the end of the building's life. 2 thumbs up!
The way that telephone pole and wires shook when the building hit the ground. That was awesome!
Classic example of an expertly implemented demo. Brilliant job. :)
I think it's appropriate for 420 to go up in smoke.
CDI nails it every damn time! Pros look up to CDI's people in awe!
Absolutely perfect. Beautiful work 👍👍
Great videos, love the bell once the building comes down....right on time.
The best structural engineers don’t always build something.
Sad to see such a nice looking building get imploded, but perfectly executed and amazing to watch.
Seemed extremely well controlled.
You guys are the best!!!
All those lovely corner offices...
Thank you for showing the demo at a number of angles.
What is the purpose of the (about) 5 second delay between what appears to be the floor level shots and the low shots?
It doesn’t get any better than that! Congratulations 👌
Amazing how it went straight down
It's so awesome to see the perfect job that it actually defies mere words. Imagine it happening where is did, the difficulties that had to be overcome 😳 . Absolutely amazing 👏
The thumbnail and title... that’s a huge bong hit!
The production value of your videos keeps getting better and better. Hats off to another safe and successful demolition.
great planning right there' thanx for sharing
Wow you were set up and ready. Great angles! I got some good footage of this myself but the aerial views you had were the best. I walked by a couple of days afterwards to see the rubble removal. Thanks for sharing.
These people are the Red Adair's of demolition.
Nice timing with the bell... Was that planned or coincidence?
THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME ROSIE O'DONNELL FARTS
Smooth as it gets 👌
Really get a "BANG" out of watching your videos
Absolutely perfect weather for a demolition.
Without a hitch. That's why these guys are the best.
I was surprised that there were still interior partition walls, ceiling, lighting, etc. all still in place. I was under the impression that most of this was removed prior to implosion, or does that vary between demolition contractors?
How much of the building debris can be separated and recycled? Like the metal frames for the ceiling panels. Able to separate those or are will they be unrecoverable and headed to the landfill along with the ceiling panels. I wish that we could reuse or recover more.
Brilliant!👍☘️
Very cool video, good demolition; of course the building imploded looked like the newest, nicest building in town.
Amazing. Very well performed.
It's incredible that it can be done with such precision, that you can take down something this size in such a built-up area without damaging the surroundings.
...this is where chemistry and artistry meet.
Enjoy watching your videos your people are the best
Must be so cool seeing this in person
Excellent work
The bells were a nice touch...
Went straight down. A1 job.
I would love to learn more about the technical aspects of controlled demolition. While watching the videos is intriguing, I wish I knew more about how the charges are placed, how they are sized, why certain explosives are selected, what determines the sequence of detonation and what regulatory and cost constraints are encountered and addressed. In other words, I would like to learn rather than just be entertained.
These guys are amazing...not that it needed to be said. Their work speaks for itself.
Love these implosions, now I know I should have made a career out of being a demolition technician, what a great job!
Outstanding production values in this presentation!
