    Man, looks like 110% of boat building is fairing and sanding 😂 Most content creators show the finish product after this process, but your videos really put things into perspective. I appreciate it.

    My disclaimer is there is probably those who do this for a living or have done multiple projects that could have done it easier than me. But, this is what it took a guy who had zero experience. Now moving forward, the learning curve won't be as steep so I hope to be more efficient. But, I speak to guys who aren't boatbuilders who want to give it a try. Anyone can do it, but it will be a little more work than folks who have built boats for 20 years. Like, DUH! But it's important to me to show the whole process. Good, bad, and ugly.

    Man, what a tease…….one swipe of blue…..just kidding. You got it looking good. As smooth as you’ve got it you could go with 2 coats before going with the 400 before final coat. Nice!

    Just a little tease. Video was running long anyway. As far as sanding between coats, remember I don’t have years of experience, so my default is to follow the specs. Just more work I guess. We shall see. Maybe that’s another tease…

    Great work. I did three coats of topcoat without sanding in between like Andy has done. That paint is amazing. I’m really happy with the finish. Zero orange peel. Going to sand w 400 and up starting today. Yours is going to look amazing! More sanding on the finish primer than I did.

    I'm going to follow the path and sand between each coat, primarily because I don't think I will hit the recoat times. I'm trying to learn the process I want to follow for the topsides. Are you saying you are going to sand to 400 your final topcoat?

  • @davidreed9987

    @davidreed9987

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes. Others have sanded to topcoat with 400 then 800, 1000, up to 2000. I’m not going that far. If I sand this third coat w 400 and don’t like it, I can do one more top coat. I’ll keep you posted on it.

    You know I don't know what I'm doing, but is that like scuffing up the gloss from the final topcoat, and then come back and have to buff it glossy again? What's the process specifically you are considering?

  • @davidreed9987

    @davidreed9987

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes I think so. It will even out the top coat even more and help the buffing and waxing that become the regular maintenance. I’ll send you a video that I watched. There aren’t very many video or print discussions of what to do after top coat.

    I really appreciate these videos, and learning how much fairing and painting my boat next year is going to suck. I'm wondering if all this extra attention at this stage is going to matter after several coats of self-leveling paint? Your chines, by the way, look fantastic.

  • @Bigeaux20

    I'm not going to say it's an easy process, but I will say that if I had to do it again, I bet it wouldn't be near as tough as this first time. I've learned quite a bit about how to progress towards a good finish. But, I can't answer your question about how much is required with self leveling paint. Just seeing the first bit of paint go on was enlightening as well. I'll give an honest assessment when I get done with it. Appreciate you checking it out.

    Interesting take. What makes you say that? I’ve been stating that I’ve never done this from the start, but I’ve been putting it together pretty well all things considered. I’m not a professional boat building, but I can build a boat for my needs. Trying something that is challenging always returns profitable.
