Havent played custodes in 30k yet. But lgs says custodes are a boogeyman faction. A novice 30k custode player could stomp a good player with a good sm list.

@@RturokDaw no, they wouldn't. I've played quite a bit of custodes in 30k, there's one list that they can built that's oppressive as shit but overall the army is actually quite underpowered. Whoever told you that either sucks at the game or is still salty about how strong Custodes were in 1.0

For real, sisters lost a lot of their flavor, Marines don't feel like Marines and are even more bland than usual unless you're a Dark Angels player or a Black Templars player. The admec and custodes codex are literal war crimes against their player bases. Guard has had it the best overall this edition but I have a sinking feeling in my gut that when they're codex comes out they're going to be unbelievably OP but It's going to break the internal balance of the data sheets and The Meta Army for them is going to be super expensive while everything else is practically going to be unplayable.... Just a feeling though.

@tbone11x if you saying “wrongthink” was supposed to be a reference to 1984 because “muh GW is dystopian megacorp”, I’m sorry to say that “wrongthink” isn’t a word in Newspeak. The term you’re looking for is “crimethink”, which only applies to illegal thoughts.
Because of the way they structured the Custodes Codex if they return the protection against Devastating wounds it will only be in that one detachment that requires Sisters of Silence to be near. Also I expect it will remain on 5+. That won’t budge Custodes playability in any significant way.

As a Custodes Stan. I love that the most impactful ruling in this FAQ regarding Custodes is a nerf.
The old shoulder the mantle stratagem allowed you to deep strike a unit of custodes and make a 5 inch charge with them. This was one of the only fun things in the codex.
The entire aspect of "FNP for mortal wounds" needs to be completely fixed for the entire game. 10th Edition was released with MANY units having FNP for MWs back when both strats, abilities, AND DEVASTATING wounds would all deal MWs. It was clearly a balance that FNP for MWs was intended to balance devastating wounds. Now it's gone and because of it, there are TONS of units who have a completely useless FNP for MWs. Sure, Tank Shock and Grenades are great, as well as units that Charge and cause MWs, but Dev Wounds are still the #1 cause of deaths to many of those models. The Lion is 300 points and still unplayable. IF they simply fix his Aura to be a FNP for MWs and Dev Wounds, then he'd be in EVERY list immediately again. All armies need this fixed by a balance dataslate update. Not just Custodes. The fact that I have been breaching this after the Dev Wounds change and ONLY Custodes got it was a slap in the face to every single army that needed its protection.
I'm seeing a lot of Hopium from Custodes players that GW will improve rules when they see how bad it is; which makes me feel these people haven't seen what GW did to the AdMech or Dark Angels. "Your points will get cheaper, you'll buy more minis and you'll be happy about it!" - So sayeth James.

The auric Champions detachment would be totally fine if the detachment buffed character UNITS instead of models.

Nah, I think the reason for Ghaz's previous capacity was purely because that's what he had in 9th. I think they were a little leery of changing it even though he's no longer intended to really work as a solo model. In 9th, he was 18 because that was the highest even number that let you have him with Makari.
This was discussed many times, but it used to say "Ghazghkull Thraka takes 18 spaces" which is also the name of the unit including Makari, where it now says "the Ghazghkull Thraka model". To me this change confirms that the intended meaning was clearly to have him ride with two bodyguards - now even three.
Whoever wrote the Custodes codex should be fired. Its like that codex was written for a completely different game, and also like they completely forgot about everything we learned about Custodes rules this edition (mostly referring to dev wounds)

It likely was because think about it like this we are seeing already from a leak paperwork for the gray nights so when we see their Codex come out that gives us an idea of the lead time before they come out. Given this codex was likely written before 10th edition was even out Just given the time frame or at the start of the addition when they were incredibly overpowered yeah it's likely it was written for when devastating wounds were mortal wounds, well also the codex itself likely nerfing it while they were at that state of the game which yeah that gives you an idea of how bad the lead time is.

Because it was written 6th months back, right after they topped unnerfed eldar at the top tournament tables. Mind, that only explains a bit of the changes. Most of the codex is just abysmally designed to boot. An SoS detachment is a great idea... or would be if they had more than 2 sprues! Also, Ka'tahs should be the shield host rule, not factionwide when all the SoS don't benefit. It's just tragic. I do homebrew crunch for fun and I could do better alone just based on going over the detachments we've seen before and maybe some imput from people more familiar with custodes lore. The sheer fail of that codex ffs...

The production delay was a decent point to the baffling rules. The FAQ/errata was literally their chance to fix the codex with the things we've learned this edition, and they chose not to. Pain. Agony, even. Man I just want my bananas to be decent :(
Imagine some mad lad on the game design team bringing back grot tanks and making them hard counter custodes.

Auric Champions has an interaction that wasn't intended but was the only thing that made it worth running. Can't be having that...
Auric Champions could really be the detatchment that let's Custodes be what the lore says they are. Get rid of stratagems that force us to use the leader mechanic and bring back "Unleash the Lions" or "The Emperors Heroes" from 9th. Let me drop 6 allarus in the middle of the field and they all spread out over the board since they're supposed to be "armies in their own right"

This is the first time that I have really just said, no thanks. I have 8K points of Custodes and will not be buying that tome of garbage that will inevitably be changed this summer. I also really like the the cards that GW produces, but not having the Forgeworld options in there for Custodes is lazy/stupid. So, I won't be buying those either.

@knoxminis1211 I haven't bought codexes in a while to be honest. At least in 8th you got a bunch of lore and art. 9th they just kinda cut a whole lot of it. Then of course with say custodes and a few others there's only a few units so the codex is super thin... AND $50+

@@istvanhorvath3306 The Warp Rift detachment rule conditionally allows normal 6" deep strikes. I wouldn't have a problem with this ability conditionally allowing something similar, but c'est la vie.
They just need to remove Devastating Wounds on the models that cause the problem and return it back to normal.

Or tweak how dev wounds work such that attacks dont splash but non attack sourves are multiple individual wounds that do splash over Same net result with fewer rules needing changes
11:51 if we're being honest, with how bad the detachment is i kinda like these workaround things. Its not like the didn't have some sort of foavor to be argued for: a commander with a teleport homer keeping the incoming squad informed of what theyll need to do the moment they get there, a pegendary commander uniting the custodes under his command into a grand unified force.

You know, I like that Auspex ends his videos saying "I post new videos just about every day" as if he posts one video each day when he often posts multiple videos in a single day.
Luckily my local game store started up a kill team event recently. So I’m more than happy to put the custodes on the back burner and play ad mech in kill team until they get fixed in a few months

How does the "Shoulder the mantle" stratagem work with advancing. Does the deep striking unit count as advanced if the character advanced? Does it count as "remained stationary" if the character did?
I wonder which way they're going to jump with Venomcrawlers when they get round to the CSM codex clarifications. At the moment, in the printed Codex the Venomcrawler only gains additional attacks if it kills something in melee, whereas in the digital rules in the app it gets them for kills in melee or shooting like it did in the Index. Since digital rules are usually the more up-to-date it'll be interesting to see whether they roll them back to match the Codex.

So no clarification on bigger shells for bigger gitz? Community seems split on whether the extra 1 damage when you push has to apply to vehicles or monsters (per the first part of the rule) or if you can push it for +1D on any unit. Feels like it’s the former but would hate to find out I’m underutilizing it!
I am so concerned for whenever my Death Guard Codex comes out. I was about to start a Custodes army (still have plans to) but then they got nerfed into the fucking mud and now I think I will wait a little bit before I do anything of the like.

@@guyperson7487 I mean, they literally forgot to give DG actual faction rules to begin with, and only got shamed into it after weeks of sub 35% win rates... iirc, at one point, DG even dipped very briefly to a week of 28 or 29% win rates. The army may "function" at a so-called "competitive" level, but it doesn't play or feel like a Death Guard army should. There's no toughness or resilience in the supposedly 'most super-resilient of resilient Marines', large parts of the army are still unplayable and not taking War Dogs/Nurglings is basically just shooting yourself in the foot. I want my infantry horde of hard-as-nails walking pus tanks back! Instead, if I don't hide everything in Rhinos, my Marines just get melted by even basic arms nowadays 😞

@@drunkenastarte5243 deathguard had the mechanical identity overhauled to a debuff army because it turns out that mass damage mitigation causes cascading problems. DG are still demonstrably more durable than their loyalist counterparts when you cpmpare like to like. But this edition has been very conservative on damage reducing effects.

@@guyperson7487although in the past imperium did fine rules wise. I do think it’s a little funny how that’s worked out in 10th but I don’t think the codex space marines is even all that bad. The main issue is just everyone builds around marines because they’re popular. I do wish they’d errata the 1st company to “your termies/veteran units always get reroll wound on oath” as a way to use them.
I'm not disputing that every codex needs work to give them decent rules and flavour again, but I wouldn't more some core rules changes to aircraft. Please? 👉👈

Having only recently accepted their first diversity hire into their ranks, the custodians are astonished by just how rapidly things have been worsening for them ever since.
Guess whoever wrote the rules for GW before and hated Chaos Space Marines has moved on and been replaced by someone who hates Custodes.

It amazes me how many people don’t seem to understand that “Errata” is “misprints in a text” and FAQ is “clarification of what is written”. Neither of them are or would appropriately have anything to do with balance or deliberate changes.
Ghaz still can't leave a transport - his base is bigger than 3" so you can't legally disembark him. He can't be wholly within 3" of the transport.

There are rules that specifically cover it, he has to be within 1" of the transport when he disembarks. Core rules
I don’t understand how the Shoulder the Mantle stratagem was allowing either of the problems in the first place. It targets the character, why would the unit he’s joining move to him. He should be moving to the unit he’s joining meaning normal deep strike charge range. And why would it allow you to double up units that’s clearly not how the game works. Who could conceivably interpret it either of those ways they’re clearly just wrong. If someone had tried either of those I’d have called cheating.

Ghaz is 3 times a meganob in wounds, so he should only take 3 times the space. for me, he included makari in 18 anyways. but now we finaly have a solution. late, unsatisfying, but nice anyway.

I wonder if they haven't changed the dev wounds thing cause they plan on reversing the rule that dev wounds aren't mortal wounds anymore. It does feel like the big issue with devastating wounds before was eldar but now they aren't busted like before its probably ok to bring back the original rule

They definitely aren't going to make that change because of all of the Dev Wounds they keep adding to the game. Making them Mortal Wounds allows for people to FNP a lot of stuff.
Damm Orks get a big buffs and meanwhile Custodes get Valerian changes who isn't even good :^)

I don't think Custodes are so terrible: into a 2000 points list you can fit in 3x 5 men wardens with each one a Blade champion plus 3x 5 men regular custodian guard, 1 Shield Captain and a small squad of sister of silence to stay on the home objective. It's a lot of custodes for a ultra élite army and each squad can withstand a large quantity of fire. Obviously It's a 4++ save army, sometimes you can roll really hot and sometimes not, but in melee custodes do their job pretty well for what i saw

I’ve tried a list with exactly that. Still got destroyed by shooters /w dev wounds. Infantry movement is very slow.. even with the once per battle advance and charge the blade champion provides

Custodes players: Finds a way to make Custodes a little bit fun and interesting. Games Workshop: ...and I took that personally. The fact that TT were able to make Custodes fun and feel like Custodes without even trying goes to show how little GW cares about the health of the game.
I wish Ghaz was just a little bit beefier based on his model size 😂
Shame they didn’t adjust the custodes mortal wound shenanigans but what can you do, just gotta stay golden

I am so glad I saved the detachment and points cost pre-codex for custodes. GW can get fucked.
As overtuned as 10ed is, I'm amazed how GW just lets some factions stary in terrible shape like custodes and admech for so long. I don't care if some of the top 10% warhammer players in the world can win with those factions; they aren't fun to play and feel like you're either swinging and/or wearing pillows.
The problem with Custodes though is that they have very strong datasheets, and as such it's way too easy to make them OP: if they still had the index detachment, with 4+fnp against mortals and devs, then you would only ever take that detachment as it covers your army's biggest weakness. To make the others even remotely viable, they'd have to provide some really powerful buffs to make it worth ditching the fnp, but then if you're playing against one of the many, many armies without good access to mortals, then you've essentially lost nothing while making the banana boys even more tedious to play against.

i really get sick and tired of hearing this argument. theres a reason why they have strong datasheets. they are EXTREMELY FEW in number. my entire 1000 point army will have less models than some players will in just one unit. They NEED to be that strong our theyd just get swatted off the board. like, seriously you pay alot for that data sheet. my basic custode guard cost more than your most expensive tanks. im not saying they shouldnt be balanced, but with armies like this, balancing needs to be done in SMALL corrections, not with a damn sledge hammer like they seem to like to do. even before this update, they werent unbeatable, if you played smart and built a proper army with proper tools for the job, you could win just fine ive seen plenty enough games of it happening. and custodes only were that strong if you came in prepared with all your buffs and played right. even then, they never were absolute top. you still have armies like the necrons and yet some reason aside from a simple points nerf, theyve done NOTHING to them. i think alot of people like to complain about custodes because they are an army that people have to actually THINK and cant just yolo against. every army has PLENTY of tools to take down tanky infantry like custodes, this is like complaining about terminators being OP yet no one does. custodes are just basically an army of terminators as they are just as expensive if not MORE expensive. just like anything though, if you know what youre fighting against, and how to deal with them, they arent that bad.

Because a battle wagon is bigger than that cyberpunk wannabe army landing craft the AdMech use and Cawl is about as big as Ghaz and bigger than the hover taxi.

Ah. An opportunity to fix the custodes, lets make sure they Auric champions is definitely not a good detachment. Some potential for deep strike shenanigans? Nope, cant let them do that. Joining multiple units together for somethjng could actually be cool? No way, if twe do that then people might actually want to use that detachment! I wonder if there is any other nerfs they can drop on the Custodes, their hatred for the faction is real.
I think GW is making Imperium units bad on purpose. Very Xenos and Chaos heavy edition. Iron Warriors just got -1 to wound army wide. Emperor's Children are getting a codex. Etc.
Luckily they nerfed custodes they were so rampart
The argument and ruling that ghaz couldnt fit in the battlewagon even though it was the only vehicle that didnt say "NO GHAZ ALLOOOWD" has been the most braindead things I have seen
I’m a newbie so I don’t know the full history, but are custodes really that weak? They have great saves, lots of wounds and also awesome abilities. I struggle to do damage against them and without devastating wounds on a couple of characters I don’t think I’d do significant damage against my buddy. (Granted I’m playing as dark angels). Is there something I’m missing?

Dev wounds are a readily present silver-bullet that sweeps through all their saves. They've always been plenty lethal, it's the fact that they are more melee than range, aren't amazingly fast save bikes which are pricey, and all those supposed durability buffs surprisingly don't amount to much based on their PPM.

I think, and it seriously is just a guess based off of what i hear Custodes players grumble about, the army has an issue being too elite. When you end up fielding half as many(or possibly less) Units then your opponent, sometimes it dosent matter how strong they are if they get swarmed and doubled or tripled with OC that could take them two turns to eat through. I think its their ability to score points that maybe puts them in a rough spot. *and it dosent seem like the codex resolved that issue is peoples big issue, id guess.

Devastating wounds bypass all their saves so essentially, RAW, Devastating wounds are mortals. They used to have a save against mortals then GW took it away. As much as I feel sorry for Admech and DW players, Custodes have had the worst roller coaster ride this edition.

Look obviously anyone that had anything to do with the custodes codex should be fired and literally a walk of shame. Possibly throwing tomatoes at them for how bad this was lol. As for it being 6 months before so they wouldn't have known nonsense. First thing, then why the changes to the axes? Like they didn't know this prior? You have got to be an idiot not to see how bad they were. Just look at the rules and read the codex and you can see how terrible the WHOLE, codex is , even layout. The only good thing in this book is the cover. And they didn't know about the mortals/devastating changes, great...the LITERALLY could have done that in this errata....and they didn't. They should publicly fire the people in charge of this codex and issue an apology, that's how bad this book is in general. The stories, the layout, the rules, like everything is terrible in this book. And people from this company said, yes this is solid!!. Like wtf, goes to show you they DON'T PLAY TEST SHITE!!!!.
GW's rules make absolutely no sense whatsoever. I look forward to the future day that someone on the inside will tell us why this is the way it is.
