4079 'Pendennis Castle' On The Severn Valley Railway & The Black Bulleid !
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Great Western 4079 'Pendennis Castle' is finally seen stretching its legs after nearly 30 years in the wilderness. Loaded test runs were scheduled for Easter Sunday on the Severn Valley Railway in preparation for its headline appearance on the SVR Spring Steam Gala. This is first time the single chimney Castle class has pulled any train at distance since 1994 in Australia. The locomotive finally returned to British Soil in July 2000 after its stint down under. The Castle class was fully restored and returned to steam in April 2022 at Didcot Railway Centre and just one year later, on Easter Sunday it would finally turn its wheels in anger !
While the main premise of the video is about 4079, we were also treated to our first sight of 34027 in its temporary Wartime Black Livery as the locomotive is now in its last year of operational running before overhaul. The rebuilt light pacific had spent most of last year in its purple/pink livery in recognition of the Queens Jubilee which to say was controversial would be an understatement. With just less than a year of operational running left it was deemed pointless of returning Taw Valley to its original guise with the impending overhaul on the horizon. 34027 is captured on the Easter Sunday hauling nine coaches and sounding superb !
I hope you enjoy the video.

Just so wonderful to have Pendennis Castle back in service. Such a great story behind her, so glad she found her way back home, where so many great people set about returning her to running order once more. Could not help but think of the song from the 80's by the band 'Men at Work' - "I come from a land down under". Can't wait to have a ride behind her one day soon.
I think the Castles were the best of the "modern" GW locos and the sequence of Pendennis crossing the Victoria Bridge is sheer poetry to me. And Taw Valley looks good in black. What a lovely video, well done guys.

Wonderfull sight to see steam in the great british countryside, still cold enough for great exhaust and still some great views before the leaves come out, Steve .

Though I live in Oz, I hadn't even realised Pendennis Castle had been inoperable for so long. Good to see it back in running.

That’s exactly what I said 2009 was indeed 14 years ago and yes 5029 was the last castle to ever come here before we have pendennis coming over here
Great to see 4079 Pendennis Castle finally been let loose 23 years after being repatriated from down under. Also great to see 21C127 Taw Valley featured as well. Look forward to the gala this week. Richard

I guess it won't be for everyone, though its definitely an upgrade on its previous paint job !
A nice combo of Southern and Great Western together, I must admit. There's one thing we haven't yet seen. Yes, we've seen plenty of double-headers with different steamies, but how good would it be to see Pendennis Castle and Taw Valley double-heading on one of their rostered turns? Although I don't love Southern steamies, I'm sure the Castle and Bullied Pacific would make a fine sight together.😂
Fantastic stuff. Might I be able to ask what camcorder you use? Many thanks.
Severn Valley Railway welcomes you GW 4079 Pendennis Castle.
