Your closing comments are spot on Nigel. It's more about getting out and practising your composition and then editing skills rather than how expensive your kit is. I've certainly learnt that since following you. Great video as always. Can hardly wait for next week to see the video from Antartica!

@@jameshogg601 regarding ergonomics probably there are advantages and disadvantages. I've got different dslrs but never a mirrorless so I cannot judge myself, however I think seeing the histogram in the live picture can be an advantage in terms of understanding exposure, not having a mirror helps against vibrations with long lenses and allows a better auto focus. On the other hand I still prefer my D750 for the real viewfinder and the long battery life. In any case in the video the comparison is between the high range z7 and the entry level d3300 so the difference in ergonomics is also due to the different price range and target (pro vs entry level)

Hi Steve. Really good points. The camera / photo industry is about shifting gear a lot of the time. Outside of 'sports and wildlife' well of the latter birds in flight or the big stuff at long range most of the cameras from the last decade will do a decent job. I figure Nigel might have got the same set up for less elsewhere.

Speaking of cameras on a budget, I was talking to a local photographer who's been wanting to sell some of his DSLR stuff since he's transitioned into the Z system. And I think he's got a soft spot for me, as I'm a young college kid doing my best to do photography with what I've slowly gained over the years, because he offered me one of his old D810s for 500 dollars, when I know he had previously been wanting to get 750-900 for it. So yay me. It'll be a nice addition to go along with my more action oriented D7500

For landscape photography I think it's one of the biggest misconceptions that you need a high-end camera. Landscape is probably one of the few genres that you really don't need a high-end camera and that even a basic $400 new budget camera would be fine, since you're on a tripod many times, and most cameras have the features you need. Yes a $4000 full frame camera may give you more options and might have more dynamic range technically but overall, I think any differences would be very minimal or not even noticeable in most cases. I'm all for buying a cheaper camera for landscape. Heck, you usually don't even need super fast lenses either. In fact I feel that landscape photography is the cheapest genre of photography to get into because you don't need a super expensive body (a used $200 APS-C body might even work) and some basic lenses (don't have to be fast). You could build a nice landscape kit for $500 if you buy used. I would say that the lenses you choose are going to be way more important than the body you choose.

I agree but what you say is perfectly valid and correct but still gear matters, but I'd say not that much ... I have had many cameras in my life and I've started my "digital" landscapes in real with D80 and it was absolute miracle (just ooc JPGs were miracle, I didn't do postprocess at the beginning like many others) compared to analog camera, then after few years I've upgraded to D5100 and again, the difference was fantastic, and then after next 5 years (well, now I see that I change camera every 4-5 years) I've bought D7200 and again, the difference was huge .. and with my D7200 I started thinking about to finally go for FX so I started first building my holy trinity triple set so I did it (16-35 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/4) and after my bank account recovered from it I've finally bought the camera of my dreams - D850 .. and ofc leap forward was huge but in reality in wide angle (16-24mm) range it seemed to me that the IQ decreased because of lens IQ. I am not going to bother you with long story - with more and longer hikes into the great wilderness I found myself employing more my old D7200 with Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 and kit 18-140 lens rather than D850 because mainly for weight. So what I want to say - for landscape photography you need a decent 24MP+ camera and good lenses and also depends on your style. If the hike and just the time spent in the great outdoors is important for you I'd recommend lighter DX set. If you don't hike (or hike a little) and you typically go with car somewhere and then get on your location without big hike then FX camera will give you a slight edge. My two sets are now D7200 - 2.0kg (11-20, 18-140 lenses + spare battery) Vs D850 - 3.15kg (16-35, 70-200 lenses + spare battery). Advantage of smaller set is also that I can pack it into smaller backpack and as I've noted above, D850+Nikon 16-35 has worse IQ (noticeably off center) than outstanding Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 on D7200 body which is sharp and perfect side to side

I've been using the Nikon D3300 for 7 years before upgrading to the Nikon D780 only a few months ago. Of course newer cameras have better ISO performance and more/better comfort functions and I love my new camera for that. Then I bought a long lens and a wide angle, and now my kit is pretty much on point. I know that I will upgrade to a new mirrorless body somewhere down the road, but my lenses will still work (with the adapter) and by now, Im pretty happy with what I get out of the camera. As a beginner that was actually really useful. I replaced it with a D7200, that I still use and will hopefully move on to the Z6 or Z7 later this year. I appreciate all of the ‘lessons’ these cameras have taught me over the years and yes, it really is about getting out and shooting.

Better gear makes life easier for the photographer but it does not make one a good photographer. What makes one a good photographer, besides practice, is understanding what you are doing behind the camera. This understanding includes how pick the settings for a scene, types of shoots needed, and composition. A version of the 80/20 rule applies here, it's 80% behind the camera and 20% gear. Better gear makes being in the field less frustrating as you are not fighting the limitations of the gear. I do not think the D3300 can do automatic bracketing like many cameras can do. So bracketing is a completely manual process, doable but more tedious. But I am keeping my D3200 as a backup camera because it still is a very good camera even if it is not as nice as my current camera.

As has been said by others "it aint what ya got, its what ya do with it". I started off with a Canon AE1, (remember those!) I now have a 5div, I would love a Canon R5 but the cameras I presently own produce images that are second to none, (Although I know there will be people who will argue that point 😏). Technology moves on and I suppose that's a good thing but one has to make the best of what they can obtain. I really enjoy using both but agree having the histogram and other info available in the viewfinder is an advantage. I heavily rely on the meter in manual mode when using the Nikon, but still tend to use it when out with a tripod. Agree that ergonomics are very important.

Great video, appreciate the comparison. When I got back into landscape photography again it was with a d3100. It was a great camera and the kit lens was pretty solid. I still have some favorite images from that camera. It's ass you said - the best way to improve your landscape photography is to just get out there and practice (work on compositions, editing technique, and really - just hours of experience). I am still guilty of enjoying a new camera here and there though! :D

Very interesting for me Nigel, I’m a beginner/amateur and I am thinking of upgrading my elderly D40x to the less elderly D3300 on a budget, purely to get live view and multiple focal points that the D40x lacks. I am used to un-ergonomics so will probably feel at home with the D3300, going from 10mp to 24mp hopefully will produce a bit sharper images too. I’m a hobbyist, don’t have to make a living out of photography and don’t produce any large prints so spending a lot on a camera would not be cost effective. This test shows me that the difference in image quality is not massive, thanks for doing this 👍

Still rocking my D300s here, and it's fantastic. 12.3MP, which if it was ever a short coming, it isn't now with photoshop/lightroom super resolution feature, I now have effectively just shy of a 50MP camera! It was released as a prosumer camera that is weather sealed, so it's a bit of a heavy lump which is the only downside but the most important thing is that I really enjoy using it and with that nothing else really matters.

My first "Proper" camera when I decided to get more involved with photography was a D3300. This was a great camera for it's time. It developed a small fault a couple of years ago just at the start of the lockdown and I couldn't get it fixed so I used that as an excuse to get a Z7. I recently picked up a second hand D5300 that I needed to try out some macro ideas (thanks to the physics of the smaller DX sensor) and it performed way above my expectations. That 24mpix sensor punches so far above its weight, it's phenomenal. Sometimes you have to make accommodations for the deficiencies of older technology - longer exposure instead of higher ISO is a really good example - but that's actually a big part of what I enjoy about photography in the first place.

This, yes. One of my favorite photographs is a panorama of the Royal Botanical Gardens in northern Thailand about fifteen years ago, taken with a Nikon fixed-lens consumer-level camera that’s practically unusable by today’s standards. And you’d have had to pry it from my cold, dead fingers to get it away from me on that trip. I’ve used Olympus cameras over the last ten years, which as of four days ago on the latest release STILL have not cleared a 20mp sensor. I use them because I like the ergonomics, the portability, the second-to-none IBIS, the computational photography features, etc. But in the end, none of that is about the art of photography. I subscribe to this channel because I appreciate the insights on lighting, composition, editing, and the simple human act of opening yourself to the beauty all around you. (The videos, including the drone footage and your obvious affection for your dog are also very nicely put together.) Gear-talk bores me, frankly. More pixels and dynamic range are always welcome, but what I really want is your drive and talent.

I've been using the d3300 for the past 3 or 4 years. Over that time period I've been fortunate enough to borrow some pro camera bodies. Almost every time I borrowed one the most of the differences I noticed were the usability of the camera more than the image quality. What I find the most annoying is the fact that I either have to program the awkwardly placed side function button to change ISO or dig into the menu. I use the d3300 for professional photo and video work and it definitely gets the job done. Hopefully one day when I can justify the cost I'll upgrade to something like the z6.

This was so interesting, comparing the two cameras and sharing results, which surprisingly didn't make a massive difference here with the detail for the size you printed. Many thanks, Nigel. I was intrigued at the results. It certainly shows that it's not the size of the camera's megapixels, but the photography skills and knowledge of the user and 'usability' of the equipment - and not how much the equipment costs, or how new it is. Like you said, it's more about getting out there and using what you have, to the best pdf your ability and personal skills. Great video.

Great video. I shoot with a D3300. Yes, I'd love to have a Nikon Z anything. LOL But, it doesn't make me like my 3300 any less. On the ISO differences, I think that's just a matter of more recent technology. My first DSLR was a D50. The ISO range was 200-1600. 400 was the fastest ISO I considered usable. On the 3300, I find 1600 to be "ok." Seems like the Z series cameras have more "modern conveniences." So much on the 3300 you have to go into the menu, while on the Z7, you push a button and turn the wheel. The only feature I'd REALLY like to have is the ability to see the histogram before I shoot; on the 3300, I can't see a histogram until after I take a shot.

Oh bless you. Yes, I have been patiently waiting. The only camera I really want is the D7100 which will support the Nikkor 10 - 20mm lens which I want for lightning / thunderstorms here in Valencia. Weather shielded, 2 SD card slots, Magnesium body and plenty of buttons to press without having to go into the menu. There are 2 things that spring to mind with my D3000, and that is the ISO performance. I can't go over 400 ISO and the self timer has to be set for every image I take. It defaults back to single shot every time. I believe it to be a bug in the firmware as the remote works fine ( if I remember to take it with me ). But, the 18 -55mm kit lens would drastically improve my image quality over the FX 35 - 80mm F4 D lens I currently have. Great video mate.

Nice video. I was only thinking about this the other day. I had to sell my d300s and lenses last year. Then decided to get into landscape photography. I bought a mint canon 30d (8mp) £45 and a sigma 18-50 2.8 ex £120. Both mint!. Enjoying used them. Now reached a point where I need to upgrade the camera. Picked up a mint canon 7D mk2 £550. Yes until you reach a certain level or the gear holds you back, cheaper cameras are great. The quality is there. I found doing super res works well. First it’s finding a location, then a composition, execution, then edit. Of course the 30d is a semi pro metal body. I’m happy with the same lens on a 7D mk2 (20mp).

I didnt sell my D5300 as I was so happy with it that I keep it as it still might be useful to me. But, as much as I liked the D5300, ergonomics and usability speaking, the Z6ii is definitely a great choice. Nigel, I think this is the most important video you've done in a while. I love all of your videos, but I say this one is important because it resonates with a much wider audience. It shows you can get great results with entry level equipment and equipment is only a small part of taking great photos, especially in landscape photography. A $3k camera lens combo is simply out of reach financially for many people, but almost anyone could come up with $400 if they really wanted to. You bring up valid comments about the usability of the D3300, but I think it's just what you get used to. If that's your only camera and you know it inside and out the usability issues are much less a problem. Under close inspection the images from the Z7 are technically better, but you have to ask yourself are they $2.5k better?

There is nothing worse than trying to knee down in a stream trying to look through the viewfinder. It really affects how well I can compose a shot or even if i can get a shot at all. I bought a D3200 (the D3300 only seemed a minor upgrade on this) back in 2012 as it was the first 24MP DX Nikon & used it together with my D300S & D700, I still use it every so often (the Z fc is taking its place in my setup). I was a little disappointed at the time as the autofocus seemed to need calibrating which isn’t possible on that model. It is okay for landscape if I use the live view autofocus (slow) which is why it can sometimes be found in my rucksack although the Z series are light enough compared to the larger D series I used to carry about.

The video demonstrates how small the technical improvements were for Bayer sensor systems in the last 10 years. Most of the differences shown at base ISO belong to the lens qualities. For landscape photographers a real breakthrough might come only with a non-Bayer sensor in the far future. Not good for companies like Nikon, which anyhow have to deal with shrinking market sizes… For anyone interested in a budget system, I would recommend the D5200 over the D3300. Same 24MP sensor, but bracketing function and tilt-screen. Much more convenient in the field but comparable prices.
