How I get PIN SHARP PHOTOS from front to back
If you are anything like me you probably wondered how photographers got their photos so sharp from the foreground to background of the image. In this first video from my chasing volcanoes series in Iceland I discuss how I focus and use DOF, apps and when to focus stack.

The amount of work you put into your B-roll and establishing shots is incredible. To run ahead and put the camera and then head back to capture you walking or driving would add so much time to the trip but it’s so worth it for us the viewers. Thank you!
Nigel, I thought I knew all this so wasn’t expecting to learn much but as it was you I clicked on the video anyway. Thank you for a very entertaining 20 minutes while I have my Sunday breakfast and I did learn more. It must have taken you ages to scout and plan all this out. Plus of course the editing. The combination of your drone videos, explanations and photos are top drawer. It doesn’t get better than this. Oh wait, . . . the next video!

Depends what you are going to do with the photo. I doubt you would enlarge a photo with a blurred foreground. I imagine if you are blowing up the photo to huge professional sizes, like I imagine he is doing, this is probably the technique to use?
The other day you were asking, if we were missing you. Well, YES! And with this step back it is easy to see the quality of your videos with fresh eyes again. Stunning.
Nigel, your explanation and examples helped me learn the PhotoPills DOF app better than any one else explaining it. You are always teaching and I thank you for it.

What an astonishing beautiful place is it...I couldn’t believe that there is in a same planet
Look like an awesome trip, can’t wait to see more! Photopills is awesome, still hurts my brain sometimes, lol.
39 seconds in, and I already have to applaud your title reveal masking skills! Much wow

I have been following you for a bit to learn all I can about photography, but what I would use in my Drone shots. NOW, I have a new Canon EOS 2000D (yes an APS-C sensor) and have come back to learn all I can!! Thank you so much for all that have done and explained, it has helped me immensely!!
I don't know why, but that apple crunch was the most satisfying thing I have heard all day. Killer video as always man! Those cinematic scenes were just stunning!

Ha ha - I liked that too! It was my 2nd attempt as first crunch didn’t work (hope that didn’t spoil the illusion!) I b-rolled Iceland to death with my drone.
I bought the Photopills App because of this video. I have watched this over and over to learn out to best use this app. Thanks!!!
So excited to see Iceland’s breathtaking scenery. Can’t’ wait to see the volcanos’ images.
I love your positive vibes you have on your adventures, makes me wait for your next video. Thanks Nigel , And its great to see ya
As someone who watches your videos on 65inch 4k tv, I thank you for shooting in 4k.
Very nice video, very informative and great presentation. Awesome capturing as always!

You make it look so easy! Amazing Nigel. Thanks for sharing those breathtaking scenery and I can't wait to see the next one.
Everything wonderful about that video : the footage, the soundtrack, the pictures, the landscapes...and those little teasers for future weeks! Very much looking forward to seeing all of it!
Brilliant! Thanks for the lesson, something I will definitely look at now. I think this knowledge is something I’ve been lacking. Can’t wait to see the next videos!!
So good to see you each Sunday morning. It's so nice to enjoy all the stunning photos and videos first thing in the morning. Always learn so much each week. Thank you for all your efforts and sharing your talents!
Wow, thank you Nigel for sharing how you got these lovely images. Stunning scenery. You make it easy to follow the ‘How and Why’. So, so good.
Thank you for this video Nigel, it was incredibly informative and I learned a lot about focusing! Can't wait to see more of your trip!
Wow, Nigel, this is one of your best videos ever, and that's a lot! A total joy to watch.

Simply stunning. Wow blown away. Thank you so much Nigel as always or sharing your truly beautiful images and your knowledge, you have no idea how much it’s appreciated
Thanks Nigel. I've been struggling with focus for a while. Knew it all in the past, but my M.E. causes memory issues. This was a great reminder and clear guide as to what to do. I had pbotopills already but on a tablet that never comes with me. Now on my phone and will be used when filming my next vlog.
It’s fantastic how you observe the location and combine this with you knowledge withour being overwhelmed by the fantastic views! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the stunning images!
Goodness! Fantastic explanation of the techinal use of focusing. BUT! The ending or the outro of this video! I mean WOAH! SPEECHLESS!
I used hyperfocal focussing all the time back in film days, carrying a sheet of paper around with all my lens settings and checking for every shot. It was impossible to focus stack 35mm slides! But I thought it was a lost art since the advent of digital and photoshop focus stacking. Glad you showed this. It's always better to get it right in camera.
Yes he’s back! Welcome back Nigel. Amazing footage and video 🙏
Nigel, these shots are superb!! Wonderful outro as well, can't wait to see it!
Every time I watch one of your videos I am reminded of what a great teacher you are. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Excellent video and great images. Looking forward to the rest of the series
Great to see this tutorial from you as I prepare for my first photography expedition to Iceland in September. You’re giving me a good feel for the landscape. Thanks!
Amazing tutorial and breathtaking images. Thank you for your tips and for making the Hyperfocal topic so easy to follow.
Looking forward to the next video! Great work as always Nigel 👏🏻
Have been waiting for this one. Great video as always
I always learn something watching your videos. Your explanation demystified the theory and practical use of hyperfocal distance. Adding screenshots from PhotoPills when composing your beautiful photos was a great way to show how to determine the appropriate focus distance.
Phantastic places, and excellent pictures. Thanks Nigel! I am familiar on how to use the concepts you explain, but you are capable to explain them in a crystal clear manner.
Great images, great tips. Well worth getting up at mid-night to watch.
Great images Nigel and it's good to see you on your travels again.
Yet another brilliant video. Thank you for sharing your tips and advice Nigel!
Brilliant stuff Nigel. Breathtaking scenery!
Wow what an amazing scenery! Beautiful images too!
Perfect timing Nigel, that was exactly the topic I was struggling with after getting my new tele lense 😊
Awesome captures of the epic landscapes. Very Informative tutorial, thank you. Itching to get out there and experience the great outdoors.
Realy enjoyed your video. You sure know how to build up a suspense. Can't wait to seeing the other episodes.
I've been to Iceland prior to covid and by far it has been one of my top places to be for photos, nature and hiking . Your pics are amazing!
Breathtaking Imagery, and clear and concise information. Cheers Nigel! 👍👍👍😁✌🏻
That lava looks absolutely amazing. Iceland truly is a photography paradise!
Amazing footage. Can’t wait for the rest. Really well done.
Tried the apple trick the other day. I don't know if it helped my shooting any, but it helped me relax and enjoy being out, which is really the point.
Really great video Nigel. Thanks for being such a great educator!
Thanks for taking us with you, what a journey....
Talk about perfect timing Nigel, will be in Iceland 5 weeks today with my daughter doing a whistle stop tour in a camper van. Route is planned to take in as much as possible. This series is going to be both invaluable and beautiful 🌋🏔
Great video Nigel, amazing scenery and some great practical scenarios to demonstrate all the technical focusing stuff using Pills. I find the hyperfocal table in Pills to be very useful as a quick reference - just navigate to find where the x and y axis meet, and you can pick AR to show where the minimum focus point is. Takes out all the jargon and complexity. Look forward to your next production - keep up the great work!
Great video, fantastic images Nigel, thanks for sharing.
Excellent Nigel, fantabulous even!
great video, and such a beautiful pictures! well done nigel!
Thanks Nigel for a concise review on focusing. Your explanations and spending time detailing the examples, especially with the use of PhotoPills app, was very helpful. Great video work on this episode looking forward to the next.
Good video as always, Nigel. I‘ll keep my fingers crossed for England tonight.
So important topic man! Thanks a lot.
Thanks Nigel for logic concerning hyperfocus distances, I like your approach. I'm looking forward to your coming videos, especially the volcano and that incredible sunset you showed a briefly near the end of this video. I'm going to Iceland in August for 8 days of shooting so your videos are very timely.
Hey Nigel, catching up on a few old videos and found this one to be excellent, a detailed explanation of getting focussing right, or when to focus stack. Brilliant! No wonder you have so many subscribers, every video is so informative and helpful. Keep up the great work!
Very interesting as always... Thanks Nigel
This was a really useful video Nigel, thank you. I’ll definitely make sure I’m thinking about this and that I use that feature in the photo pills app when I next get chance to go out and shoot. Some great photos in this video as well. I particularly like the pano. The footage from Iceland looks incredible! I can’t wait to watch it.
what a stunning place! thanks Nigel, very useful
Epic footage! Looking very much forward to seeing the rest of it and fun to see the locations I've been under other conditions. You had much more snow than me :)

Yeah - lots of snow. It was a pain for composition but hey ho.
Welcome back. Fantastic video and photos. It looks like you visited another planet. Looking forward to the rest of the mini-series on Iceland.
Thanks for another great video! Anxious for next week!
Wooooow, what a video! Nice shots!!
I really enjoyed this video. I just recently upgraded my equipment and am excited to take it out and try the techniques here. Thanks for a great channel.
Excellent~ Can't wait to see next few weeks footage as that volcano was showing off for you!
This video is an absolute triumph! The final shot of the waterfall was truly captivating! Can’t wait for the next few videos from the Land of Ice and Fire!
Thanks for the very clear explaination Nigel, I will start practising!
Great video, lots of good takeaways and explanations, looking Ford to next video.
fantastic work, always inspiring, thank you so much
Epic! Thank you! Just the advice I was looking for!
Another informative video with breathtaking scenery! Thanks.
Fantastic job Nigel. Tx so very
Wonderful footage.. thanks for sharing. I really like that you make everything understandable for the average person.
Excellent discussion and examples of DOF and getting sharp photos. I've got the app and now need to use this feature.

Nigel, What an amazing video lesson! You presented your material in simple terms and had great visual aids. I really liked when we were looking through the camera as you adjusted the zoom and incorporated graphics showing the focus points. I am still a new follower and I think this is your best video that I have seen. Thank you!
Amazing. Congrats on producing a superb and informative video.
Didn't get a good sleep last night so my brain won't focus. Have to watch this a few times I think. Footage is mind-blowing looking forward to the next instalment. Thank you for bringing this to ordinary people like me, I learn so much.
I have been eagerly waiting to see what you bring back from Iceland Nigel - certainly not disappointed! Looking forward the the next videos, and calendar perhaps??
Great video and information! Looking forward to more in the Iceland series. BTW- I use the EasyMeasure-Camera Ruler app and the AR functionality of my iPhone to get approximate distances to objects (near and far). Also allows me to save images of the measurements overlay on the pic for my location research… helpful info combined with the embedded GPS location info from the phone.
Thank you for this tutorial, Nigel. I constantly have issues with focusing and focus stack more than I probably need to. The issue for me is when I am trying to use my 10 stop ND filters to slow down the water in the waterfall, while also including a small subject in the near distance. I have the PhotoPills app, but did not understand the fact that doubling the HFD would help a lot. I’m going to try this next time. Thanks again.
Awesome! Thanks for this video. Well explained with great examples!
Superb - Some stunning videography from Iceland!!
Super interesting, thanks for the tip on the app
Very helpful explaining the photopills app. Thanks for the education, priceless to beginners like me learning as we go.
Beautiful video and photo's Nigel!! And the focus issue clearly explained! Thanks!! I find your video's highly educational and inspiring!!👍👍
A very interesting video! I heard about the hyper focus point which I have never considered before. Thank you,
The footage at the end felt like a movie. So cool!
Great explanation of how to use PhotoPills, I can see me using it more often. Spectacular locations and as always great presentation, can't wait until the next chapter :)
I am mainly a flower photographer (amateur), and want to do some landscapes. I live in Arizona which is very photogenic no matter where I look. This video is exactly what I need. So far, focus has been hit or miss. Now I can't wait to get out there trying to use what you've taught us here. Thank you!
