Designer gouache is different from Artists gouache, it has more of an opaque base. It was conceived for graphic design to give more versatility in blending and corrections than acrylic paint. Artists gouache is more transparent and must be blended with a base to heighten its opacity.

@@karenneill9109 The best advice is to check the LF rating on the tube or pan of color you're thinking about buying as the rating can vary even within the same brand, some will be top rated while others not so much. I won't trust the rating of a complete set sight unseen.

Gouache has a HUGE drying shift. Colors never ever look the same wet as they do dry. The best practice I’ve found is to mix enough color initially because going back to color match is damn near impossible. Lights always dry darker, and darks always dry lighter. Always, always, always.

Facts the only reason I manage to color match is cz I took a color theory class in college n our teacher had us mixing till we got it right. I save myself some drama by mixing a “big” batch of the colors that I’m going to need a lot of.

I was waiting for this one. It's tough to pit Arteza against a professional paint. Arteza is fine for experimenting and learning but due to the quality of the pigments used and the fillers, it does not have a good lightfastness to it. For some, that's not an issue at all. For others, it's a big one. One thing I love about the legacy art brands like Derwent and W&N is the detail that have on their products; the lightfastness ratings, the pigments used, where it was made (even down to a certain factories for some products). And yes, the pigments used is a huge reason why there is such a variety on costs of the paint tubes. Some pigments are way more expensive and rare than others. I'd like to see you come back to this one after you've had more time to experiment and learn with gouache and painting to see if your opinion has changed. You're correct in that a lot has to do with personal preference. Now in the world of gouache is acrylic gouache. Try that!

This. Seeing Arteza's results give me a chalky finish in each pic I see on KZread (dunno if is for the camera or the lighting), but I prefer Holbein for the same reason, they have good light fastness and it doesn't give me that chalky effect. I'm working also on the acryla gouache version and they work even as watercolors (except you cannot reactivate the layer), so by far I'm happy with those.

@@edgechan I did not like the Arteza gouache at all. It has a weird feeling and calling it chalky is very apt. I haven't found any Arteza products that I personally like myself and have stopped buying from them. I haven't tried Holbein yet. The price is stopping me, lol. I like the Liquitex Acrylic gouache but I know that opinions on it are very divided.

@@rof8412 I haven't tried Arteza because I don't have the feel to buy them myself if in almost all the videos you can see that effect. Holbein might be expensive, but if you buy the pack with primary colors (magenta, cyan, lemon yellow, white and black), it will help you to learn how to use them and how to mix the colors.

I love how realistic of an artist you are. Not everyone is good at color theory. Not everyone can mix well. There's a medium for everyone and it's okay to be better at some things than others. That doesn't make you any less of an artist. Thanks for being you! ❤️

I love my arteza products....I like that I don't stress if my kids want to paint too or if I'm just mucking about to play because they aren't so expensive to replace.

Because it can be reactivated, you can cut open the tube and put the dried paint in apallette. Great video!

The Gouache is the only product I like from Arteza, they are really awesome for the price! But Designer Gouache from W&N, Schmincke etc is just a different level and it is making even more fun if you got used to them. But I have to say: Wow your artistic skills are bomb!

Great job as usual. I’ve got a few tips in case you find them useful: For skin tones, mix different ratios of the primaries and you’ll get any skin tone you like. As for that substance that came out of the white tube of gouache, is the binder, you can mix the inside of a tube with a toothpick before using them. Gouache changes color as it dries. Lighter colors will look darker, darker will look lighter. So it’s always good to have an extra page to test the colors. I love Windsor and newton gouache, and those little tubes last for ages. ✌🏻😆 Great video!

@@semir2080 Why so aggressive? There's no need for it. This dude is from the UK and probably plugged it into the internet. Winsor and Newton's manufacturer suggested price for cobalt blue is $26.49. You can find this on Blick and other places. Yeah, it's cheaper if you shop around. Amazon: $18, Blick $13. Jerry's Artorama is on sale for $6, normally around $11. Michael's sells online for $18 with a possible coupon. He said it CAN go up to that, and likely went off the Winsor and Newton company's suggested price as the highest possible.

Arteza feels more rewarding, and you feel great about spending so little on a variety of colors you know you'll like. Awesome video ADC, might have to go buy some from Arteza right now.

When you’ve had more practice mixing colours you’ll never worry about how many colours a paint comes in again 🙂 You only really need the 7 primary colours, black and white to mix anything, although sepia and paynes grey are good additions to speed things up.

@@isabellmingram4338Perhaps the commenter follows Sir Isaac Newton who thought it was 7? There are different systems in different spheres after all, even if it's not typical in what is classical colour theory that it's three. Most kindergartners learn the subtractive system where the three primary colors are red, blue and yellow; and their associated secondary colors are orange, purple, and green.

Let me tell you. I have been sitting on a full 60 count of gouache from Arteza for months now, and seeing your videos and how much fun you are having with them is really pushing me to use them. Watching how excited you are really inspires me to get excited, and I just love that. It makes me so happy to see others enjoying art for the fun of art.

I love that you've found a medium that makes you so happy and fulfilled. The fact that you've grown comfortable enough with it to just dive into a project headfirst without any fear of what you're doing, and that it doesn't trigger any anxiety for you, is nice to hear.

I was really interested to see this comparison, I've never used Arteza and I have a combination of the Windsor and Newton and the Daler Rowney (DR being about £1-£2 cheaper per tube), only because those are the only 2 brands on sale in most art shops in the UK. I have found with paint, having a set of 60 or more is completely pointless as you can mix any colour if you have the right primary colours, browns and a white. I have 14 paints, bought individually so I end up with the colours I want and they are all I'll ever need so actually, they don't seem expensive at all. I also agree about not liking tubes that much, Caran D'ache sell a set of Gouache in pan form (or cake form as they call it) which I recently bought, and they are brilliant! There is no wastage of paint and the colours are always there ready to use, perfectly opaque and lovely and creamy. I'd definitely recommend checking those out.

I've just ordered them actually! Only recently found out you could get gouache in pan/cake form. I haven't used gouache since I was at school studying art, so had no clue how much things have changed since then (a loooong time ago lol). Excited to get started again!

The way I was taught to use W&N Designer’s Gouache in University in the beginner level, you dilute it to an ice cream consistency before laying it on the paper and that helps with 100% opacity and blending. And yes, it hurt my wallet but it was worth it! They taught me good color theory! X3

I'd try rolling the tunes from the bottom while they're fresh. I think the key is to be conscious about not leaving them in a crunched up state before they dry. Great video, art and personality as always ADC!

I didn’t even know I had this much of a passion for painting until your first gouache video and I’ve been an artist for 15 years, professional artist for 10years, professional tattoo artist for 8years, an award winning tattoo artist for 5years, digital artist for 4 years, and an air brush artist for 2 years. I’ve always wanted to paint growing up and tbh, I forgot all about it with everything I’ve been doing. Your videos sparked that passion I’ve been missing. I have to do something different after a while. I can’t only do the same thing day after day, that’s why I’ve ventured into so many avenues. Although I’ve turned everything into an income to this day, I needed something else. Between designing an doing tattoos, digital work for companies, airbrushing shoes for customers, etc… I’ve added painting to the equation and I couldn’t be happier, it has also gave me something new to do with my son (2yo). He LOVES it. Just wanted to say thank you my man, you’re a legend

Another great video. I've recently added some Pebeo studio gouache to my collection, it's cheap and comes in 100ml and 220ml tubes and is really good for learning to mix colours without worrying about waste. Looking forward to the next one anyway😀

In the future, you should always test a mixed color on a piece of paper to see what it looks like after it has dried. Since you are mixing on a wet pallet, the color change on your page is due to it drying and being absorbed into the paper somewhat.

Forget color change, cause I think that’s just a feature with gouache.. or paint in general... but do you think the wet palette took away his mixing time? I’ve only had ceramic dishes for my gouache but Windsor does dry faster than I was expecting for a product noted for its “blending”

I enjoy your gouache videos, gouache is a very rewarding medium. I think one way to use the 'nicer' paint is to build your own palette of pigments rather than buy the whole range. I didn't buy a set as often they are not the pigments I'd like (and I'd never buy the whole range of any paint). I also had a difficult time starting with mixing paint, but it was because I had 'cheap' paints. Cheap is not always bad, but later I learned that the 'primary colours' in many sets are not true primaries, often they are mixed pigment paints that lead to muddy, unpredictable mixes. Buying what are known as 'convenience colours' to have more colours seemed easier, but it can be more expensive and confusing to eventually have so many paints. A limited palette of single pigments is the most affordable way to use artist quality paint, and one reason I chose paint over markers. I have a warm/cool palette of primaries, with some earth colours, so I only use about 12 pigments. I can mix most colours from those. It ends up being more affordable in the long term to mix colours, and all the tubes can be replaced. For me W&N is the winner, but arteza, or the jelly gouache is a great way to see if anyone likes gouache before buying more expensive paint and learning colour theory (it is not as difficult as it sounds, it is a really valuable, life long skill and free to learn). A ceramic palette to mix on, and something like an airtight box to keep opened paint in saves all the paint for another day.

As an amator artist, I tried Arteza and felt in love with their product. I think they have an amazing range of color, the bundle is cheap but the quality says it all. I use arteza's acrylic for a year now and Im very happy with it.

Variety of colors makes it for me....Arteza for sure. Much bigger hurdle to get the colors to fully take advantage of the expensive set.

I absolutely agree with you on this one, the Arteza gouache is fantastic considering the price point and with such a huge selection of colours it’s possible to experiment and play, I’m not as experienced with gouache as watercolor, but I have found that the Arteza gouache is the best student grade gouache I’ve tried.

I like the arteza side more it seems more crisp love the shading and the detailing but I think that was because of the colour range you had to work with!!

Great video! I would love to see you revisit this challenge in a year after you've had more experience with colour mixing.

I agree, it's a tough one to decide on. Both have a good amount of strengths to them, but I think in the end I'd wind up picking Winsor & Newton out of those two just based on my own personal philosophies about things, namely the fact there's open stock available. There's just something to be said about being able to pick up a replacement (or additional) tube of paint, even though the cost of entry is a lot higher. However, this is something more based upon personal preferences from other media, and where I've caught on quickly there's a reason I tend to gravitate towards the more expensive, higher pigment product (Gamblin Artist Oils vs W&N Winton, Copics vs Ohuhu Kaala (although I'm super happy the Kaala actually got me to try out alcohol markers, and they'll be at my desk for quite some time), and even the acrylics I use for miniature painting), open stock, and local availability. Since I live in an area that effectively sees paint-murdering weather six months of the year (yay for Canadian winters, it kills off mosquitos! ...Sort of. :P), the ability to pick things up locally is something I weight heavily in my decisions.

I like the look of Arteza the best. Also that's much better price just for a hobby Artiest. Thanks

Are there markers that go over gouache without ruining ink or paint? It’s genuinely exciting to take this journey with you.

I have enjoyed many different brands of gouache and different qualities of brands. I prefer Turner Design Gouache, the biggest difference is pigment load. I believe that you did a very nice job with both! Flat fields of color are a real advantage for gouache especially over transparent watercolor paint. I have “rescued” dried out tubes of gouache by using a knife to split the tube and rehydrating a portion of the gouache I need for the painting in front of me. You can go slow with a sponge or float the dry paint chips in a pan of water gouache is truly versatile! Thank you for sharing your gouache experience! i haven’t used Arteza’s paints so I only know the fancy Windsor & Newton ones haha. I also used the gel gouache and an even cheaper brand called Reeve’s and out of the three I used I liked the Windsor & Newton haha. Your work is amazing btw, I only recently got introduced to your channel through Jazza. I want to get back into painting. I primarily use watercolours and occasionally gouache.

M Graham. Quality pigments mean more to me, over fillers. I also love Holbein's Acryla Gouache, which you can't reactivate, but you can obtain that cel animated look.

Winsor and Newton has colors available open stock. I suggest you get Flesh Tint! You can use that as a base for skin tones, and add whatever tints or shades you want to get the color you need for skin tones. I also recommend M Graham gouache. Their paints in the palettes rewet like a dream and dry slower because they use honey. I love watching you grow as an artist. I also suggest the Color Globe from Kolormondo which will help show you all the colors you can mix. Or at the very least a Cyan Yellow Magenta color wheel for bold, bright mixes.

I would say arteza definitely wins. As far as i can see the final art comparisons speak for themselves. Also many people can give the arteza paints a try to see if they like them without being too much out of pocket, whereas not with the WandN ones. You should also try the arteza metallics range. Like I think the arteza would be way more convenient and I'm not talking about just the price. Like not everyone is a master of colours so I think I'd still go for arteza due to convinience. The results for both are amazing though

Every time i see these comparisons I just notice how much more vibrant arteza paints are compared to almost everything (other than Holbein)

Hey, i have a few tips to help you mix colors in the future. on the blue to red fade, i noticed some muddyness when it got to the purple. That happens when you mix a cold blue or red with a warm red or blue. If you want a clean fade, try to keep both colors cold or warm. And as for your skin tones, if you want a warmer tone, add yellow to the tone you have. If you want a roseyer tone, add red to the tone you have. If you want a colder tone, add blue to the tone you have. I use a similar medium, watercolors, and am a character designer so i got pretty good at mixing my own skin tones, and i use that trick. It really helps. I wish you luck in your guache journey!

If you like gouache, I really have to recommend trying the arrtx "acrylic" paint pens. I put "acrylic" because they do not act like acrylic as they reactivate with water like gouache after being dried. I don't know how, I don't know why, but these paint pens are gouache paint pens and I love them. Btw, I use the arrtx/ himi gouache and except for the white, they're very good. I actually put them in a watercolour pallet because it was more convenient than the case and they reactivate from being fully dried on the pallet very well. The white is not opaque so instead I use the Winsor and Newton permanent white gouache, which is absolutely amazing and such a clean white
