I think phantoms gave the clock a real use. When you're down in the mines you can use the clock to keep track of the days and know when to sleep :)

Speaking of freezing to death, there's a phenomenon called "paradoxical undressing" where in severe cases of hypothermia, a person may experience "hot flashes" that makes them remove their clothes because they feel like they're burning up. Dripstones can fill cauldrons that have a potion tipped in them. Take the water out first. Infinite potions from one. Just add more cauldrons with dripstones
