40 Days With a Baby Seagull

Музыка

Around 40 days ago, Beth (who I work with) noticed a baby seagull behind the building we work in. After some Googling we decided that he was probably only a few days old, and would apparently take around 40 days to learn to fly. We didn't want to touch him, especially as his parents were still around. There was no way of climbing the walls either side of him, and we didn't want to put him in the wrong nest as apparently the adult seagulls would attack him. It was raining heavily that day so we put a box down in case he wanted some shelter, and called him Kevin.
Long story short (not that short)... Kevin sat himself in the box and ended up living there for the next 40-ish days. Everything we read said that baby seagulls need tonnes of food. The adult seagulls were struggling to get down to him, so we left him some food out each day to make sure he'd get big and strong enough to fly away. He still called for his parents each day and they seemed to come down when they could. He had his "car dodge training" out in the car park, learnt to scare cats away, and started to find his own food eventually.
I decided to film his progress each day, and last week he looked like he was trying to fly. He hasn't been around for a few days now, so it looks like he's learnt to fly and has joined his seagull pals up in the sky. There was nothing suspicious by his box or on the road to make us think otherwise.
Earlier today, we heard that familiar whistle, and saw a baby seagull on the roof opposite. There's no way of knowing, of course, but I'm pretty sure it was him.

They grow so fast when fed plenty of fish.... I had a damaged one found in the street.... Lots of fish...did the trick...he flew off first time over the cliffs...perfect...100 % self confident...just leaned into the wind and flapped away first attempt..... I miss him.... Now accepted by the harbour birds, flying the cliffs and enjoying a free life.

It's honourable that you will set him free. Too many people on these pages keep wild birds as pets and it's so cruel. They have be 100% free when they are big enough to fly xx

This like the complete opposite version of my life right now… mainly because the baby stranded on the ground at the bottom of the building I live in. It hasn’t been abandoned it just has no way of getting back to its nest and the parents are still protective of it. So every time I leave the stair well I have to be ready to be divebombed by the parent.

I had a seagull couple come back to our house every year for atleast 4 years. I loved them and they became so tame. No they don’t come back anymore and i presume they are deceased :( Luckily one of their kids have grown up and started coming to us for food every year since they died. I’m pretty sure it’s their kid and his mate because they sit on the same corner of the same building by the coast and they come our house and settle either on the balcony or the power line pole.

The video serves as a reminder of the summer we have just experienced of a chick growing up in the back garden after it fell off the roof. There was good and bad in the experience, and a large umbrella for protection from the parent gulls was needed, but it was nice to see it grow up and finally fledge.

Going through something similar, althought said chick's nest was on a flat roof that I could observe from my balcony. Its chirping has become a welcome background noise in the hot summer days and I even get slightly anxious when it doesn't show up for a few hours. Healthy and flying around with the other gulls as I type it. Think I'll miss it once it leaves.

well they watch over their "kids" even if they are out of the nest, so no point to rescue them, the only problem they do not look at humans as the standard predators, most of the time, but the parents get crazy when cats, dogs, crows or other seagulls get near, but as said they can be provoked by humans as well

i've always been scared of seagulls there beaks freaked me out anyway recently one started landing on my window ledge and it looked like a baby so i threw out some bread , i did this daily for a few weeks and found myself getting over my fear and really looking forward to seeing him . He stopped coming for a few days although i'd hear banging on my window ... he was never there when i went to look out! then one day he came with a badly injured leg and half his feathers missing ( i realized the banging had been him trying to land on the ledge but because only one good leg he couldn't balance... i got a box ready to take him to a sanctuary but he was still flying somehow but i was sure he was gonna die due to infection... it really broke me heart i couldn't help ... but day after day he'd manage to survive the night and in the morning hop on that window sill one good leg trying to balance to eat his bread A few days ago he once again started to weight bare with that foot again i was so shocked as it looked so mangled b4!! but now it looks like its improving. i hope so much he makes a full recovery it really is a miracle to see what the fight for survival can be! anyway here is my essay on seagulls and your vid was just beautiful
