40,000 Bodies Here | The Story is Extremely Interesting
Montparnasse Cemetery is the second largest cemetery in Paris (after Père Lachaise), the Cimitère du Montparnasse covers nearly 50 acres and contains roughly 40,000 graves.
Lined with trees, the cemetery’s large alleys provide quiet grounds for a Sunday stroll that’s perfect for history lovers. Indeed, many French and foreign intellectuals and artists are buried here, including Charles Baudelaire, Jean Seberg, Serge Gainsbourg, Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, and Eugene Ionesco to name but a few.Montparnasse Cemetery has some of the most amazing monuments and memorials.
From artists to actors, politicians to singers, Montparnasse has everything for your cemetery lover. A Parisians delight, modern, gothic and timeless.

The cat is astounding, the same as the bird. Aides is nothing to play with! I had a friend of my mother, who passed away from it. But he would never push anything to anyone else. He was a real nice guy. Ty for part 2 of the tour. I do enjoy these videos. Tc and stay safe always.

I can never get tired of these old fashioned family mausoleums. I noticed that most have doors, others do not, and some have doors that for some reason or another, are left open or partially open. Dearest Sue, the stories you told in this cemetery give us a better understanding and put into perspective who these people were, how they lived and how they died. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon beginning in 1857, earning medals both in 1868 and 1873. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1880. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and subscribed instantly!😄Well done, Sue🥰You are doing a great job, keep up the good work, oh btw some correction: 40,000 is the number of burial lots, but the actual number of deceased must be +250K, because each chapel / mausoleum contains dozens of family members...Pere Lachaise houses +70,000 lots, but it's estimated that one million people have been interred since its opening in 1804✨

Most people mistake the grave sites for the actual number of interred in a cemetery, for instance Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery of Vienna) has 330,000 grave sites but there are actually 3 million people interred in this huge cemetery (actually the largest cemetery in Europe by the number of interred) along with the remains re-interred from the former burial grounds 🙂Because most of these grave sites are in fact ''grüfts'' (grave vaults in German) which are designed to receive dozens of coffins

Hi Sue, at 21:21 there is a grave with Colonel Dreyfus at the top and stones on the grave. The second name listed is Madeleine Levy, in memory of her, she died in Auschwitz at age 28. I think the stones are a Jewish tradition, left in respect and memory of the deceased.

At the risk of sounding stupid, I would like to better understand how the smaller mausoleums could house families. I have seen Italian and South American cemeteries where it it obvious that they extend far underground to accommodate many coffins, but how 2 or more people can be interred in these small mausoleums is a puzzle to me. @@Allan-hd1uh Mausoleums are ancient in France too. It was for the 'old famillies'. I think that a lot of them are in the Père Lachaise cemetery. Mausoleum, gigantic sculptures. A lot of celebrities are buried there since centuries. And some people of Louisiane who were living and died in Paris too. Marie-Céleste de Marigny de Mandeville (1784-1864), daughter of Bernard Marigny, the richest French planter and settler in Louisiana at that time who founded the Marigny suburb of New Orleans and the town of Mandeville. Marie-Céleste held a salon in Paris under the name of Marquise de Livaudais. Victor Séjour (1817-1874), native of New Orleans, first African-American writer in history, free man of color voluntarily exiled to France, protégé of Napoleon III, close to Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas père. Sebastian O'Farrill (1751-1820), Spanish nobleman who was governor of Louisiana from 1799 to 1801. Returning to his country, he was a fervent supporter of the invasion of Spain by Bonapartist troops and, after their defeat, took refuge in Paris. Norbert Rillieux (1806-1904) Free man of color born in New Orleans, cousin of the painter Edgar Degas. An engineer, he invented a process that revolutionized the production of cane sugar. He ended his career as principal of the Ecole Centrale. Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884), considered the "brains" of the Southern Confederacy, this Louisiana senator became minister of this state which had become secessionist. A rumor attributed to him a role in the assassination of Lincoln. He fled in Europe since the end of the civil war. Jean Soulié (1760-1834), originally from Castres (Tarn) was a director of the Bank of Louisiana and grand master of the Masonic lodge of this colony. He married the daughter of a slave there and returned to France when she died. Four of the children of this union, all free people of color, had successful professional careers. André-Denis Laffon de Ladebat (1746-1829), statesman, philanthropist and abolitionist, son of a Bordeaux shipowner who practiced the slave trade. In 1788 he published a “Discourse on the Necessity and Means of Destroying Slavery in the Colonies”. The family vault houses the remains of his brother Philippe Auguste Laffon de Ladebat, settler in Santo Domingo during the slave revolt who then spread to New Orleans and those of a collateral Charles Joseph Laffon de Ladebat, colonel of the French Brigade who defended New Orleans against the Northern fleet in 1862, during the Civil War.
