Eerie Mausoleum Filled With Furniture And Books

Ойын-сауық

Maria Bashkyrtseva (Marie Bashkirtseff) (1858 - 1884) is an artist and a writer, the first Ukrainian with paintings to be acquired by the Louvre. On 31 October 1884 Maria Bashkyrtseva died from tuberculosis. At home, her friends kept vigil with her. In the crypt, her mother organized something like a salon - her unfinished work Holy Wives is put on display, and a few personal household items and interior objects are placed with her.
In the catalogue from her posthumous exhibition, François Coppée, who had met Maria Bashkyrtseva several months before her death wrote, “I saw her only once, for an hour - and I shall never forget her.” This phrase is one of many well-known descriptions of the artist by her contemporaries that echo the words of Guy de Maupassant etched on her gravestone: “This was the only rose in my life whose path I would have paved with roses if I had known it would be so brilliant and so brief!”

Some had altars for requiem masses be offered. King Henry 8th planned such a tomb for himself in St. George's chapel Windsor, but it never got built.

It seems that in France they put more than just coffins in their mausoleums, unlike us. Their mausoleums are like 8:23 little home from homes, with chairs for the dead to sit in and with photos and flowers here and there, they have the hint of "parlour" about them 😊

That living room was amazing. Do you know if she requested it so family would be comfortable when visiting or did her family do it for her out of love? There are so many tragic aspects to this mausoleum. It was built for a young, beautiful, vibrant, artistic, 19th century female intellectual who died years before she should have. Her obviously wealthy parents wanted their amazing daughter to have a resting place that equaled the home she enjoyed in life. The fact that her mother arranged intellectual salons which included her departed daughter. Marie’s family very obviously treasured her, encouraged her artistic leanings, and viewed her death as a massive loss - personally and intellectually. Girls were not, in general, valued for their intellectual and artistic talents in the 19th century. Her parents obviously adored her. Her tomb shows it ❤ She wrote, “I am my own heroine.” What a bomb-ass woman 👑

Very interesting crypt. I guess it hearkens back to the days when people made a special trip to honor and remember their deceased loved ones. In this particular case, comfort while visiting had high priority. I've seen some mausoleums in New York (USA) Catholic cemetaries with altars in them, ostensibly for conducting Mass. Thank you very much.

Have you ever heard of anyone or i guess family member who's gone inside and opened an old mausoleum and either taken things out or just gone in to see what they can see? And or on the other hand, recently buried (within the last couple of years) actually opened up an, whatever type of burial site to put someone in? Some of these either here or in Ireland have open places. I know this is kinda a stupid question since these are all so unique and beautiful, but do people still build these sites? Sorry for being so long. Great video, i can't believe, they left one of her such large works of art with her. People were so into making Thier departed having thier favorite things with them. It's not really a chair. It is referred to as a Prie Dieu. Which is a prayer stool or desk used mainly for private devotional worship. In addition to a kneeler and arm rest a Prie Dieu sometimes had a sloping shelf for a bible or prayer book. Most commonly they were used for prayers that did not need a book or for private non-liturgical prayers. At 8:06 there is a man in the background, off to the right, that looks much like the sketch you show of this author. Not a spirit, just a coincidence.

I had an a great grand-Uncle buried at St. Ouen sur-Seine a long time ago. I only found this out through a death notice trapped in an old book belonging to my deceased Dutch grandmother who had the last name of Tilly (French). The death notice showed a name. My Grandmother's mother. I am one eighth french. The grave in St. Ouen was removed a long time ago, but the church registry still had the record. I have one picture of my great grandmother, an unsmiling person. The uncle died young and I have a picture of a young man with glasses from that time period. I suspect he is the one. Dead at age 30.

Wow that is great to have those pictures and ancestry details. I myself found out my ancestors go back to the Spanish Armada

Have you thought of teaming up with Arthur Dark of Hollywood Graveyard channel? Perhaps you two could swap film in graveyards for each others channels that otherwise would be unable to be seen on each others channels? A ghostly visit, as it were...You'd have to film SILENTLY but have background noise and in as close to each others style as possible and then do voice overs, but it could happen! (Say "It could happen! In Judy Tenuta's voice!) Look her up, she was hilarious. LOL Oh and wear a big loose dark jacket to use to block the sunshine behind you when filming, use like the black cloth on old fashioned photog equipment from the 19th century...

I saw Jim Morrison's grave in 1986. At that time, I think there was a bust of Jim on top of a small marker, with the nose broken off. Don't know what is there now.
