4 Year Review Of The Omega Speedmaster: Time For The 3861? Also Uncle Seiko’s Speedy 1479 Bracelet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#speedytuesday It’s been over 4 years since I bought my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 1863 Sapphire Sandwich and it's been a very interesting ride. At first I wasn't sure whether or not to get the 1861 Hesalite Speedy, but after seeing the beautiful 1863 movement, I never looked back. Now however, the new 3861 Speedmaster was released earlier this year with an upgraded bracelet and an upgraded master chronometer movement. I mainly lusted after the beautiful bracelet but I wasn't sure if that was enough to upgrade from my Speedy.
All my problems have been solved, because Uncle Seiko, a brand selling amazing aftermarket bracelets and straps modeled and solving problems for Tudor, Omega, Seiko, and Longines owners all over the world, recreated the Omega 1479 bracelet which is now on the latest 3861 bracelet.
Join me as I take a look at what I love and hate about my Speedmaster and at the incredible 1479 bracelet from Uncle Seiko. The bracelet has truly changed the entire experience of my watch and I wish I got one earlier!
Disclosure: I reached out to Uncle Seiko asking about the bracelet he makes for the Tudor Black Bay 58 (due to my well documented issues with the OEM bracelet) and at the same time I asked if I could take a look at the 1479 bracelet for my Speedmaster. He agreed and sent me both bracelets for free and I do not have to return them which is great because I would be super sad if I had to return them.

    Had been wanting a speedy pro for awhile... kind of scratched itch with a speedy racing few years ago... didnt quite get me there. Thought about saving some money and getting 1861 but had a special occasion this year and decided to splurge on the 3861 and man im glad i did bc i love the bracelet, step dial and hacking seconds lol if i had gotten 1861 i wouldve def got an uncle seiko bracelet. Great video, man, as always! I have a small wrist and now I am seriously thinking about a speedmaster reduced. Look I made a comment on your comment in the last Jory video and someone there found it offensive, came all gorilla on me, maybe for not understanding the context, I don't know but just to clarify that it was obviously a reference to your saga with the BB 58, a watch that I think it's amazingly beautiful. Nice weekend, man!

    Hacking is also an essential thing for me as I actually still use my watches as tools. However, on the Speedmaster there is a way to "hack" the time called back hacking. I was skeptical at first but I was able to find good reference to that being the approved NASA technique and that it would cause no harm to the movement.

  • @thewatchidiot

    @thewatchidiot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah its essential indeed! Yeah I figured out how to back hack the seconds hand by accident actually lol but I never used the technique bc like you I was very skeptical about damage to the movement. However, if NASA said its ok then I'm all good! Would you happen to have the link to the reference?

  • @anthonystevens8683
    @anthonystevens86832 жыл бұрын

    Once again a terrific video TWI. I also have the 1863 and went through the same thoughts when I originally went to look at the 1861 Hesalite version but after seeing that wonderful movement in the display case back I went for the sapphire sandwich. Fortunately for me I could adjust the bracelet to a comfortable fit. The new bracelet certainly feels better and is arguably a better taper (I compared the 1863 with the new 3861 at the AD) . Like your speedy mine does not hack and is neither coaxial nor METAS certified but still has the manufacturer 5 year warranty and my example so far is within the METAS accuracy (but not tested for 1500 gauss among other things) so I'm more than happy with it. Although like you TWI my preference was for hacking seconds but after living with my 1863 I just set the hands to align with the running seconds hand fast to a time signal or in my case my go to G-Shock with radio synchronisation. It's quicker to set too as I don't find myself waiting for zero seconds to stop then zero seconds on the reference to start. Would I consider a change for the new 3861? Not right now. If Omega produce the new bracelet that is on the new Chronoscope with tool less micro adjustment for the new 3661 I may have to have another look but this will not be any time soon and I would be unlikely to sell my Moon watch. Ultimately for me my 1863 is my perfect speedy, super easy to read and with that manual wind you get an additional connection with the watch that you don't get with automatic movement watches. I've not tried other straps yet on mine, not even the ones provided in the huge Moon watch box but I may experiment at some point.

  • @thewatchidiot

    @thewatchidiot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Anthony! thats awesome to hear that you have the 1863 as well and for pretty much the same reasons lol! As far as the oem bracelet goes I'm at least glad that I was able to make it fit which is more than I can say for my BB58! At first it was a matter of looking better on straps but then it felt just a bit too heavy for me. I'm glad Uncle Seiko stepped in bc it has changed the experience. I wish mine was within metas accuracy range! mines about 7-9 seconds fast as far as I can tell but I'm just glad it isnt slow bc that would drive me insane lol. Yeah if the new bracelet had the chronoscope bracelet then I really do think that I would have tried getting the omega bracelet despite the lofty price tag. That being said the blue dial chronoscope is absolutely gorgeous imho and i think its on my long term wishlist! Hopefully the price comes down to make it a bit more accessible bc its a looker especially with both the pulsation and telemeter scales. Definitely give it a go on other straps bc the speedy absolutely sings on straps which is why not wearing the bracelet was never a problem over my last 4.5 years. As amazing as the Uncle Seiko bracelet is seeing it on straps when i was filming did make me want to wear it on straps again for a while lol! The Omega natos are really awesome as well and yeah the box is unbelievably huge lol

    @@thewatchidiot I love the chronoscope a lot, being a bit of a retro techno nerd that watch just works for me totally, with the same movement as my Seamaster ceramic dial chrono it's one I have to see at the AD at some point. As for my speedy I'll have to try some alternative straps and maybe even a Nato That would be a first for me for the 1863.

    New one is not a moon watch anymore. Also not space qualified. The lineage of 321 to 861 to 1861 is unbroken. The 3861 is completely a new beast, being coaxial. Uncle Seiko bracelets are fantastic for the Speedmaster. I got the flat link. The watch feels proper vintage now, and the bracelet looks practically original. The new modern bracelet that came with my 1861 was removed instantly. I spent 2 years trying rubber straps, nato straps, leather straps, until I found uncle Seiko.

Its now back to the previous +10. I have stopped leaving my Speedy next to my charging phone at night. Don't know for sure if that was the cause but....

    @@thewatchidiot hey I’m not judging just an observation. I bought my bb 41 as my first luxury watch and it’s the only bracelet I have ever liked. The end links don’t rattle anywhere near as bad as my samurais or my turtles so for the most part I can forgive the little things.
