Thanks for the vid! Came over from your reddit thread, super helpful. So I just thought it’s worth mentioning, I presume you could use high quality Bluetooth audio via the dongle and even a lapel mic via the controller if you ever needed high quality mic. Could even use the wireless mod mic! (New version coming in 2024 apparently). Edit: I guess I’m saying you don’t need the audio splitter if you’re only going to use audio in if you use a wired lapel.

Yes I believe that is all correct although I haven’t personally tried the lapel mic combination. I will do when I next play with my friends and will edit this response if it doesn’t work. The wireless mod mic will go through USB right?

Wait until you try these on the xbox series x in Dolby atoms ….its insane. It’s not fair when playing first person shooters. On my ps5 i can hear everting dont get me wrong, but with atmos on xbox i can hear more vertically …like pinpoint accurate. In general the AirPods max are the best gaming headset you can buy right now..i can’t imagine how anything could sound better while gaming

I did pick up a Series X recently and the Atmos license, totally agree with what you’re saying they’re amazing for gaming on Series X. I only wish I could connect it without the audio cable as I have snagged it a few times. Definitely the best headphones I’ve used for gaming too!

@@LucaCardini Do you mean the Sony Pulse 3D that costs £89.99? I have that, and in my opinion, yes there is a big difference in sound quality, clarity, balance and range. To my ears, the Pulse 3D is too bassy and sometimes a little flat. Having said that, I still use the Pulse 3D when I need to chat to friends in a party chat because it's just so convenient. If I'm playing single player games and need headphones, it's the AirPods Max all day. It also depends on how sensitive you are to sound. Some people can't tell or don't care about the difference and in that case the Pulse 3D is fine. I wouldn't get the AirPods Max solely for use as a PlayStation headset, think of it more like an added feature if you're going to buy it anyway to use with your phone/macbook. And one more thing, you might want to wait a few months for the APM2 announcement. Word on the street is that it will be compatible with hi-res audio, which may or may not be important for you depending on your music apps.

@LucaCardini I am yet to invest in an AirPods Pro 2 as my Pro gen 1 are still perfectly fine. But I have heard they sound better than gen 1. I’m less fussy about the Pros because I only use them for convenience situations (like outdoors). If you could only buy one of them, I recommend buying from the Apple Store or Amazon for the returns policy and see which you prefer. I have no doubt I will get the Pro 2 when my gen 1 kicks the bucket!

No it doesn’t, it will use your controller mic. I would suggest some sort of USB mic like a boom mic. Or you can use the Antlion wireless mod mic but you would have to stick something on your headphones.

I wanna be able to communicate with my AirPods Max microphones. Currently, the audio is working great over bluetooth dongle, but mic is limited to controller. Is the best option to use the apple wire directly to the controller? Will the apple wire allow mic and audio to work thru the headphones rather than controller mic? I would prefer to use some type of bluetooth dongle that can do both but im not sure which to choose or if its even a option.

No the wire will not activate the microphone either as the apple wire is only one way (it provides audio, but doesn't send it back). Using the dongle is basically the same as the Apple wire, just that it's wireless. If you want to use a mic, I still feel like the best way is the Sennheiser Y connector I showed or something similar. If you want to go wireless with audio from the Airpods Max and you want a wireless mic, look for the Antlion Modmic Wireless (amzn.to/3wzs3NM). I have to caveat that I have not tried this method, but I do believe it would work as you can manually choose separate audio and microphone channels on the PS5. Make sure you buy it from a place with a good returns policy (Amazon) so that if it doesn't work you don't have to stress about returning it. Another thing to consider is a USB shotgun microphone if your setup is convenient for it, like if you are close to the PS5 and screen. Did you get the official Apple lightning to 3.5mm? As far as I’m aware it’s the only one that works. Expensive but does the job.

Im trying this with a normal apple charger wich ive then but a aux the apple adapter an doesn't work, id assume its the same as using the normal cable from lightning to aux as shown in the vid??

Third party cables don’t work. Only Apple’s official cable works. It’s pricey but order it from a place with a good returns policy so you can try.

What do you mean by a PlayStation standing mic? Currently I am using the APM connected via Bluetooth Audiostick, and I have connected a USB microphone on a tripod. Make sure to go into sound settings > audio output > switch output device automatically and turn it off so you can separate the input and output devices.

No. You can't use the APM mic when doing these methods. I would recommend either the Bluetooth ModMic or a USB boom mic. The boom mic would require the right setup though, mostly being near the TV/monitor would be helpful.

what happens when you get a call and you shift the bluetooth to your phone? how do you connect back to ps5? do you need to get up and go to the ps5 to press the button? skull method

The Audiostick is very aggressive with its connection so if you connect to your phone, the Audiostick will take back connection after a few seconds. Unfortunately the only way to stop this is to get up and pull the Audiostick out of the console until you’re ready to reconnect again. However when you plug it back in, you don’t need to setup or press any buttons to reconnect again, it will do so quickly and automatically because it remembers your APM. This is the same for connecting to anything else like your MacBook, the Audiostick will simply brute force its way back into control, even if your console is simply in rest mode and you keep the USB sockets powered. It is annoying but despite that inconvenience, it’s still my preferred way to connect the APM to the console. I also connect my APM to Series X via the 3.5mm to lightning cable and it doesn’t feel as good because of the dangly wire and if I want to put the pad down I have to take off the headphones too.

Have you tried going to sound settings and selecting your headphones as the output? I’m not sure it always auto switches over when plugged in. And also what the person above said.

I use the ModMic but you would have to be willing to stick a magnet to your headphones with a double sided tape. I've done so on my Sennheiser HD650 but wouldn't do that to my Airpods Max personally. If you sit in front of a desk to play, you can also go for a USB boom mic, but then you wouldn't need the Y connector at all as the mic would go directly into the PS5. All in all, if you absolutely have to go with the Y connector method, I think a lapel microphone would work well (the ones that you clip onto your shirt). Rode has good ones under £/$100 but make sure it's the one with two black lines, their most popular budget one has 3 black lines.

Yes, any headphones will support it because the 3D audio is handled on the console side.

Did you plug it into the PS5 (to power it up) and then hold either A or B? You also have to put the Max into pairing mode.

Interesting. Have you tried turning off other things that use it? Like your Macbook or iPhone? I found that with the Audio Stick, if it's being powered (e.g PS5 rest mode) it will aggressively pair with the APM even when I'm trying to connect to something else. Maybe the reverse is happening here, where it's connecting to another piece of tech?

Is it definitely the official one by apple? Only that one works. If you’re still having issues try to plug the wire into the airpods before plugging into the pad, and vice versa.

No, the Apple cable only transfers audio. If you get the cable or Bluetooth dongle, it’s best to also use an external usb microphone if you care about sound quality.

So the audio stick doesn’t let you use the mic on the AirPod max bought the audio stick and used it and the mic didn’t work at all cr

Hi, did you press one of the buttons (A or B) twice on the Audio Stick? Also did you go into Sound settings on your PS5/4 and choose microphone input device as Audio Stick? The quality won’t be good due to limitations of Bluetooth but it should work. Check the instructions on the back of the inner box that came with your Audio Stick.

@@Axhxr_ Did you click it twice? You should see an additional light on the right side of the Audio Stick. And the sound quality will drop significantly. Also, did you go to microphone adjustment to do a sound test so you can hear yourself?

Yes it does. In fact any pair of headphones will work with 3D audio as it's the PS5 that processes the 3D sound. Even without 3D audio turned on the headphones sound good with games in my opinion.

If you definitely have the official Apple cable (only that one works) plug the lightning side into the headphones first and then plug the 3.5mm side into the controller. Press the PS button, go to the sound settings icon and choose controller audio. You might need to unplug everything and restart your PS5 if it’s not working. I have had this issue a few times on PS5 and XBX, the issue is usually plugging the different ends in the wrong order. Try a few different things and see how it goes. The important part is that you need the official cable. Only that one works.

I definitely notice lag when connecting maxpods directly to the TV for gaming, but with the Audiostick it’s so low that it feels non existent. Having said that, I haven’t tried any music rhythm games or competitive shooters with the maxpods + Audiostick. I would say that for single player games the experience is excellent, and I consider myself to be quite sensitive to audio lag. Cheers!

The difference is very minimal to me, and I am quite sensitive to lag. I would say for single player non competitive gaming it's acceptable, considering the freedom of movement you get in exchange. I totally get why some would swear by the wired method though!
