    Properly heating up the catalytic converter is the difference between passing and failing. Some techs will not even bother heating up the car. Run the car for at least 30 minutes on the freeway before a smog test.

    In CA, law states we must let an already warm car idle for 3 minutes, however we can't sit there reving the engine to warm it up. This is why I recommend leaving your car on, while you wait for your smog check.

    The amount of total ridiculousness we have to go through to get our cars to pass a smog is just insane. And in the end, it to help cut down on pollutants, but they make you drive a lot more to get the test to work. Drive a certain particular way for a particular amount of time; don't charge or replace your battery; and so much more.

    Plus you are not breathing air restricted to California. Unless these regulations were followed in Mexico, Brazil, India and China it's not going to make the air cleaner. I'm in Maryland and most states don't have to do these tests but VW was so helpful to charge me $200 to tell me it would cost another $1400 to fix and clear the code. They say it's a secondary air injection system sensor. Look up that part and it's $60 but for them to do the work and clear the code $1400. I'm trying some options, but they are basically forcing me to trash a 2009 vehicle that runs great with only 110K miles because it's too expensive to fix for a regulation that doesn't exist in a states surrounding.

    Hey Oscar, I have been fighting a secondary air injection readiness monitor battle on a 2001 VW Passat. I can force the test with my VCDS software and dongle, but it makes two attempts and then aborts the test. I did have a CEL and 0411 error code, but replacing the carboned-up combi valve remedied that, or so I thought. No more CEL, but unable to set the readiness monitor. Weird.

    This is a great video but I have a 97 nissan truck and it has always been a pain to get thru the drive cycle. When I lived in cali it could sometimes take 2 or 3 months before it was ready to be smogged so you should find out when the earliest you can take the test. Some states, it's something like 60 or 90 days before reg expiration. And that's when I was driving 20k a year. Now I drive this less than 5k and it's insane getting thru the drive cycle. Last time I had this in a garage they charged me something like $300 for the dynanometer which I didn't even know or authorize them to do. Also, there are a gazillion devices and apps out there now as obd scanners. Buying the most expensive one is usually a waste of money. Buying the cheapest may cost you money because remember most cars today are controlled by a central processor and you're hooking up some cheap carp from china and who knows. I've never seen it personally but I've heard stories of air bags going off, ecu trashed, dash lights performing odd, and other things. Whatever you buy, check the reviews. But, there are some features you should insist on, if you're not an experienced diyer. Don't be fooled by the hype, most scanners all do the same thing. Read codes, pending, current, permanent. Erase codes -- which reset's the monitors which is not always a good thing. Retrieve freeze frame data. Show which monitors have completed, n/a - not applicable to your vehicle, and completed. 3 tests should always show complete because they run continuously. Also, besides ca, many states offer exceptions, such as the number of drive monitors that have to be completed depending on year. Some states also offer exceptions for certain vehicles and some allow an optional emissions test instead of obd check. That's one of my bees with nevada because if my vehicle was 95 I could take an actual emissions test but since it's a 97 it has to be an obd check, which doesn't measure emissions at all. Like many states, when it comes to smog testing, the legislature seems to be pretty dim.

    @Master Automotive Training ... thanks for the video. Can you explain what to do (in California) when a Catalyst converter needs to be replaced? I need to replace mine, and I've been reading about the CARB Catalyst converters; California requires those and they are EXPENSIVE!!! I haven't been asked for smog check, for 2 cars, by the DMV for years every time I renew my registration [I don't know why]... and I don't know if I'll ever be asked to get one. Do you just replace the converter (with a CARB one) and that's it? Do you need to inform the DMV? What if you install a non CARB compliant converter? Thank you again.

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for watching! In California you will not need a smog check for 8 years if the vehicle was purchased new, this could be why you haven't been asked for a smog check. Checking the EO (executive order) number on a catalytic converter is required by all smog check technicians and stations. If you need to replace you catalytic converter, I always recommend an original from the dealership. If the price is out of range then an aftermarket one would be the next step, a reputable muffler shop should be able to get you a California approved catalytic converter for a lot less. Always ask them for the EO number and you can look it up yourself to make sure 100% its legal. I'd also recommend you have your vehicle tested. A catalytic converter shouldn't and wont fail on its own, there is usually an underlying condition that could have caused premature failure. Fuel mixture, ignition system faults are some of the leading causes of catalytic converter failure. If you replace the catalytic converter and the fault that killed the first one is not fixed it will soon kill your new converter. Also the state of California requires shops to perform proper testing and documentation prior to condemning and replacing a converter.

    Oh yeah California we have a smog abatement fee on top of the other resignation fees. So I have a 97 Jeep XJ which passed smog better than the previous test. The exhaust system needs work so I’m going to replace the muffler, tailpipes. The catalytic converter will be out and it should be good. Since it will be out is there anything I could do to service the unit, cleaning or just leave it alone and reinstall it? You had great tips!

    On that catalytic although many companies and people say to clean them or dunk them in soapy water, you MUST NOT DO THAT! You will cause more damage than good. The cat is a metallic filter and as such will only clean the emission as long as its hot over 500 degrees F, and the element still has oxidation properties. Just keep your engine well maintained and you'll be golden.

    Nice video, great information and presented in a very clear and easy-to-understand way. I'm headed for a CA smog check soon. I've got a 1990 Corolla with 433k miles on it (original engine), and the check engine light is on. It is throwing a code of 71, which apparently is some sort of emissions system fault. This car was originally sold in California, but has spent the last 15 years of its life in a county in Oregon where smog checks weren't required. But now I've moved back to CA and need to get it smogged. I have owned the car for 25 years, and during the first ten years (while it was still in California) it never failed a smog test. But now it has many more miles on it and that CEL is on (sometimes it goes off, but most of the time it stays on). I'm worried. Despite its mileage, it runs great, as it always has, and I have no desire to get rid of it. I had it repainted in 2013 and today it still looks great. I get compliments on it all the time. The reality is that, due to its age and mileage, this car is practically worthless. So I don't want to throw thousands of dollars at it to get it to pass smog. Any suggestions?

    Great question. For military personnel not seeking California registration he would only need a passing inspection without a certificate to obtain a base pass. Just make sure all the readiness monitors are complete, EVAP can be the only that can be incomplete, without worry of being failed. Check engine light must be off and not add on parts to intake, exhaust, or any of the emission systems on the vehicle. Really appreciate the positive feedback and glad my video was able to help you! I drive a 97 automatic transmission mustang and it didn't pass the smog check because my transmission is slipping too much such that they can't complete the test at 25 miles per hour. I took it to two different smog check stations and it was the same issue both places. I'm in California and I have to go to a STAR place. At the second place, the guy told me to try getting some LubeGard Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid Protectant and add that to my transmission fluid, saying that would help make my transmission slip less and maybe that would do the trick. I got some LubeGard and am going to add that to my transmission fluid and see if that does the trick. I'll also make sure to drive it for the time/distance you recommended as well before I take it back in. But, do you or anyone else on here know if the LubeGard might actually work? Thanks!

    Does the down-pipe have a EO# on it? All parts on the vehicle that are not OE must have a EO# on them so the inspector can verify they are in compliance with emission laws, if not they will have to fail the vehicle to modified then you'll have to set back to stock or buy CA approved parts.

    I got hosed by the smog station for failing the "visual". I had a small piece of duct tape on a hose and that was a "fail", even tho emissions were ok. Had they just pulled the tape off, it would have passed. Now they jacked up the price over 3X the original estimate. I am pissed for failing to realize such a minor detail would cause this problem.

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    3 жыл бұрын

    Wow I hate when shops feel they can start charging and charging and charging. I understand we have a business to run but keep it legitimate. On the tape issue, that would be considered a grey area, see a hose or any component considered to emission related can’t be MODIFIED, that includes the addition of tape. We are also not allowed to repair “in this case remove the tape” without prior authorization and if the station was a test only they are not allowed to do any repairs. Sounds messed up right? I know I feel for the consumer but at the same time the fines and loss of work we get from the state is far worse which is why most shops will not bend the rules. Hope this helps.

    For the Oxygen sensor you need to complete the drive cycle. They replaced a good sensor, just because the monitor wont set doesn't mean the parts bad. To set the monitor you need to let your car cool down all night then run this procedure step by step. 1. start the car and let it idle and warmup for 1.5 minutes. 2. Increase MPH to 53-60 mphs and hold cruise speed for 11 minutes. 3. Decrease speed to 30-35mph without stepping on the brakes after 30mphs you can use the brakes to bring the car to a complete stop. 4. Monitor should have set with these steps.

    CCM isn’t an issue it will pass with it incomplete, however with CCM incomplete and 02 as well, this tells me you might have a fuel control issue or a faulty 02. You’ll need to do a propane enrichment test, to verify 02 operation, mode 06 would also be beneficial to you for more info on the 02 sensor system.

    Hello Hot Rod, the HO2 sensor used to be part of tune-up back in the feedback carburetor days. Now we replace them when they are evaluated and determined they are inoperable or slow responding. With a P0420 it’s best to test the HO2s to determine if they are operational. If they are slow responding or inoperable they’ll lead to a false P0420.

Then decelerate without applying the brakes to 35-45 mphs and hold steady again for 7 minutes. If you now check your monitors CAT and O2 should be complete according to Toyota. Hope this helps!

    If you use a small code reader and look at your IM Status, you should see that all readiness monitors say complete. 2ndly you'll want to look to make sure you don't have any code present at the time. If all that is fine you should be ok to pass the smog check. Visual inspection could still fail but as long as everything is connected and no add-on parts you will pass. If you are in the SoCal area drop by for my students to take look and make sure you will pass.

Their scanning equipment is high grade, not the junk auto zone uses on your car that always gives you multiple codes for no good reason. The problem is at the testing facility most likely. 400 miles and multiple drive cycles later I wish I'd at least get a check engine light so I could fix the problem. Throughout all of the scanning at different shops, the only codes that have been retrieved were an ABS sensor and transmission shift at some point in time. 18 year old vehicle with 121 thousand miles, no rot or rust almost in new condition. I'd really like to pass the stinking test. Wish they'd test the actual emissions instead of a computer, like they used to do not long ago.

    Some vehicle manufactures reset the monitors when your turn the car off. However on VW I am not aware of that issue, it could also have to do with a weak battery not maintaining proper voltage to the Keep Alive Memory, which would lead to resetting the monitors every time you turn the car off. I would recommend the drive cycle and once complete head straight to your NYC inspection station to have the inspection complete without turning the car off.

    A P0420 sets when the rear oxygen sensor reads oxygen change the same as the before converter oxygen sensor. This means the catalytic converter has deteriorated and is not longer oxidizing and reducing emissions. The CAT is designed to convert harmful carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and reduce green house gas oxides of nitrogen. When the CAT goes it begins to allow more carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen to be released from the car thus creating more brown haze called smog. The CAT won't cause driviability issues only if its blocked, but they do wonders for the air we breathe.

    I've got a 2012 Toyota Corolla with about 115K miles on it. It has been well taken care of over the years by the previous owner, they changed the oil and such impeccably, had everything done on time, etc. As of the past couple of years, the downstream O2 sensor started testing only 1 or 2 out of the total of 4 readiness tests on OBD2, flipping between 1 and 2 out of 4 total tests for it and basically just halfway testing and untesting. I've checked voltage on the wiring, changed the O2 sensor 3 times in 2 years (Toyota-branded Denso made no difference vs aftermarket), had the battery tested, etc. When the ECU is reset completely, virtually all tests are complete the next day. It requires overnight testing for the Evap, but everything else tests very rapidly, including both readiness tests for the upstrem engine-side O2 sensor. The catalyst also isn't testing, which I suspect is because of the downstream O2 sensor (before the catalyst) not testing first. What could cause this? There is no check engine light, no error codes in the scanner or anything to indicate that anything is wrong. What am I missing? OBD2 device also shows the voltage of the downstream O2 sensor is registering and also it is reading the catalyst temperature properly. Control Module Voltage is 13.84V. Toyota recommended cleaning the throttle body, but that doesn't seem to be related to the downstream O2 sensor that we're having issues with. It's simply jumping back and forth between 2 of 4 readiness tests completed, then back to 1 of 4, then back to 2 of 4 and just says they haven't been completed yet. We've driven it hundreds of miles after reset. Same thing over again.

    when it asks if Idle is in spec I would think that would mean is the idle within 100 RPM -or+ of the idle speed stated on the Underhood sticker. Then you bump it up to RPM needed for the Timing test. You would no longer be at "Idle" speed if you have to bump it up to do the timing test. YOU know what now reading it you got me confused! Not sure on that! So if idle on sticker said Idle speed 750 And Ignition timing at 950 max for timing test And it was idling at 800 before the test. Would that be a YEs for in Spec? Well No not for the timing test at 950. Or really you just do the test at idle?? Not 950 max? Smog Check manual: 1.4.4 Ignition Timing Test The Ignition Timing Test applies to 1976 to 1995 model-year vehicles equipped with adjustable timing. If the underhood emissions control label, an emissions application guide, or other reliable manufacturer derived references indicates timing is not adjustable, then the Ignition Timing Test is not required. Inspectors shall check the base ignition timing using the vehicle manufacturer procedures. Many underhood emission control labels provide procedures and specifications for checking the ignition timing. If the procedures are not on the label, refer to an emission control application guide or an appropriate service manual. If no manufacturer’s engine speed tolerance is given for the timing check, the idle speed shall be within 100 RPM of the manufacturer’s specified idle speed

    Keep in mind a P0101 is not the MAF sensor. What your computer is telling you is that compared to the "desired" amount of incoming air to the "actual" amount don't match. This could be low fuel volume, vacuum leak, restricted injector, broke intake boot, leaking air filter, etc. If you check your monitors it wont reset them unless your command your scanner to do so. Driving 100 miles is more of a myth, you need the correct drive cycle by the manufacture to drive the vehicle under the correct procedure so the computer knows you are setting the monitors.

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    You'r AIR will only run on cold start up, driving it won't help in this case. I have seen many GM products have this issue based on a weak input. The computer looks at the oxygen sensors to determine if the AIR pump kicked on, if the sensors are weak, they are sluggish at detecting the air flow thus won't set the AIR monitor to pass. I don't recommend you replace the sensor without testing them first, for further diagnosis you'd need to find a local CA Smog Test and Repair station or contact an instructor a local school to see if his/her class can do a diagnosis for you. We tend to diagnose it FREE of charge to help our students and our community. If you are near us please contact the office to setup a diag and one of our classes can take it to help our students.

    What is your take on replacing the old dry rotted vacuum hoses with silicone hoses (red or blue are common choices these days). Would this cause a visual fail even if they are secured and tight?

  • @stevew9563

    For vacuum applications I believe silicone is fine. Where people get into trouble is when they replace PCV or EVAP hoses with silicone. Hoses for those applications have to be oil and gas rated. Most silicones are not.

    I have 2006 Ford mustang and can't pass smog due to check engine light code p0775 it's a transmission code do you have any experience with this also failed smog due to white smoke coming out of my exhaust

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    White smoke isn't a failure, it's considered steam here in CA, however its up to the technician. A P0775 is low trans pressure, the reason these codes will cause a failure even though they are not engine codes. A trans not having enough pressure will cause shifting issues which leads to fuel consumption thus causing a smog check failure. This code could be set by a faulty pressure transducer, circuit, or internal trans fault.

    I live in Illinois and going through my first emissions test to renew my registration. My car was rejected because the O2 Sensor & EGR Monitor showed "Not Ready" or "Not Complete". I was told to "drive the car" and come back in a week. I came back a week later and got the same result. Because I was rejected twice, I have to get clearance by a mechanic before I'm allowed to come back for another test. I've seen two mechanics. Both have showed me the car has no codes - "Nothing wrong with the car. You just need to drive it." I've been driving it a ton (mostly highway) and after each 50-100 mile trip, I take it back to the mechanic to get it re-tested... No luck. It's worth noting that my car is a 2004 Honda Civic w/ manual headlights, and a few weeks ago I accidentally left my lights on while in an appointment. They were on for about an hour which was long enough to kill my battery, so I had to jumpstart it. My check engine light has never come on, I haven't had work done on the car... just the battery situation. Anyone have advice on what to do (other than driving hundreds of miles)? Do I need a new battery even though it starts the car fine?

    I had the same issue after I replaced my battery. It's not the number of miles driven, it's the "drive cycles," which are sequences of starting, idling, accelerating, cruising, decelerating, stopping, etc. When my car showed "not ready," I started it up the next day, got onto the freeway, drove to another city about 20 miles away, ran errands for a couple of hours, then came home the same way. Did the same thing the following day. That's what it took.

    2002 Suburban 5.3 engine 125000 miles all stock. Just smogged yesterday. Prior to I drove 10 miles freeway in 2nd/3rd (auto) gear to keep revs/temps up, also ran Berryman b-12 fuel system cleaner (1 can per 15 gal, only because my fuel gauge was not indicating correctly prior to smog - BTW it fixed the fuel gauge - probably deposits on the sender contacts in the tank - crap CA gas). I believe have done plugs & wires around 70-80k miles, maybe. Oil change was overdue. I asked the tech was I "close" on anything & he said he has no idea, the test equipment only indicates pass/fail no details on the percent's of anything. Anyway good for 2 more years, probably sell b4 that. I have previously suggested to friends they run a tank of premium (assuming the vehicle usually runs regular) before and at the time of the test. The B-12 is probably the same idea & cheaper than premium. What do you think of running premium?

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    If the vehicle doesn't require premium, i'd advise not to use it. Lower octane fuel ignites at a lower temperature, if you run 91 on a vehicle designed for 87 you'll prolong the burn process of the fuel which will lead to the marble effect and cause more internal issue and could lead to a check engine light with Knock sensor codes or misfires. Seafoam is also a great fuel additive that I use personally and works great!

    If it’s K&N more than likely it’s legal, but it needs to have the EO label on or near the filter. If you don’t have the sticker contact K&N and they will provide you with one. If you go to shop it’s up to the tech, whether or not he/she will research to see if it’s legal. If you live near Riverside you can go to K&N directly and they’ll issue the sticker on site. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Legal answer is no you would fail because part of the SMOG check process is to actually confirm the correct number of cats are present. However, The real world answer is Smog Inspectors are sometimes lazy and they don't want to get down on thier knees to look under your car to see if the secondary cats are there. So you got a chance of passing. What is that chance? Maybe 60%

    I have a BMW M2 that is a Dinan build so it has the larger turbo. I received pictures of the EO number on the part under the hood before I bought the car. I even called Dinan to verify that it would pass California smog. They said it would. After I purchased the vehicle and went to have it smog, it failed. I showed the technician the EO number. He looked it up in the computer and found the executive order. The executive order only listed a 2016 M2 but my car is a 2017. What I think is really weird is that my vehicle’s model year started in 2016. Why would the executive order not apply to my 2017 vehicle which has the exact same engine? Can you provide any guidance? This seems ridiculous. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for the video!

    What did it fail smog for? The Tune? Modified Software? EO's are only for certain models because when they apply for the EO maybe that is all the models that were out so far. Manufacturers have to reapply to get CARB approval for subsequent years. If the engine has not changed and the CARB emissions standards have not changed then usually that is an easy application process. But if anything is different then a completely new test is warranted on the new models/engines. Sometimes sales are not at a level that makes getting that CARB certification feasible for manufacturers. Or they just have not gotten around to doing it yet.

  • @MasterAutomotiveTraining

    I’m not 100% sure on the logistics of an emissions “state inspection” in other states. But, being that California has the strictest emissions test let’s break it down. Here we are required to have no check engine light on, codes can be stored but light has to be off. Second 96-1999 can have no OBD readiness monitors incomplete and 2000& newer can have EVAP readiness incomplete. Here we can’t fail you for a maintenance reminder that just means you need an oil change. We also can’t fail you for an airbag light during a routine smog check inspection. Based off what you shared I’d say you are ready for an inspection. Here in CA we offer a pretest, if that’s available I usually advise people to get a pretest if you aren’t sure if it will pass, but I feel confident you’ll pass based off what you shared with me. One other note not sure if East Coast does a visual inspection which we do here in Ca and you could still fail for a visual failure here. Hope this helps
