Do you have a video or could you do a video of the ages and the math milestones please? You have something similar for reading and it is amazing for making sure my kiddies are aligned.
I love the idea of using a bead on a pipe cleaner! Will totally try that in my 2nd grade class. 👍
This is fantastic. You are so right. The number line is very confusing for some first graders. I love these tips and can't wait to use them. BTW, I just started to introduce the number line. Your tips will help me and my students. Thank you.
This video came at the perfect time! I teach 2nd grade & a m introducing open number lines this week! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
We follow Envision, and they definitely use number lines in 1st grade!
I teach first grade and number lines are taught in chapter 2. Even though they have a number line on their desk, it is very abstract. I wanted a number line on the floor but at the end of the year we have to clean up everything and I didn’t want to spend all that money and have to throw it away. We have puppy number lines with an arrow that moves. Most of the students understood the concept but I have one student who has just caught on to addition by drawing pictures. She was not ready for this concept yet. I allow her to use a technique that worked for her. I really like how you used the cubes to introduce a number line. Thank you for all of the great ideas. Sometimes I just need a reminder. ❤
I LOVE these ideas- I will be using them with my first graders
In K, we introduce it late in the year. I start with a big floor model that they walk on and hop to add.
I love your teaching tips! Yes, I use a number line to teach addition and subtraction. I'm in year 2 of teaching first grade (year 9 of teaching overall) but have never heard that I shouldn't use a number line. The idea of using a number path will be so beneficial to my students that are struggling with this concept. Thanks for the great teaching tips!!
I have always had reservations about teaching a number line to first graders, is always so abstract for them. I will use your ideas to teach number lines. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this! I teach 1st grade and we have used number lines for as long as I can remember! We use the Everyday Math program.
I am a first grade teacher and we use Saxon Math curriculum (for now) and we have our students doing the second grade level of math and they use a number line in Saxon math.
I use the number line in my first grade classroom. It's great for comparing numbers, doing before and after, and so many other concepts.
I use the number line to keep track of how many days we’ve been in school. I used a clothespin to keep track of what number we are on.
Excellent
I teach first grade. I have number lines that I purchased from Really Good Stuff. They have a frog that you move from one number to the next. They really help students visualize that process of moving on the number line just like the pipe cleaner example you gave.

Thank you for sharing about those number lines!! What a great visualization!
Familiarizing the students with the last strategies is great.
Thank u so much for all the tips!! Your an amazing teacher and thanks to you I've taught my daughter how to read!! Your really break it down for us non teacher and basically dumb down how to teach stuff!! Amazing please don't stop. I plan on using your videos all year to homeschool my kindergartner!!
Love number paths!!! Definitely think that’s the place to start. Number lines take a lot of intentional instruction but is a great tool. Thanks for covering this topic!
I love your tips.but I have been using number line in kg1 before coming across this, what i did to make them understand was to put some numbers on the floor from 1 to 10 nd ask them to hop forward and back nd also ask questions as they hop on them it was fun. They love it nd they also learnt.😂🤣
Great ideas for any students struggling with math concepts. Thanks Susan!
This is a fundamental idea many people ignores.. it can later expand to the y axis for complex numbers.
I teach 1st grade and I let them pick a character they like to jump or hop on the number line. For example: I let them pick someone like Sonic the Hedgehog because he’s fast and it’s something they can have fun and relate to. They will always relate to him. I also have a number line on their desks, and for tactile kids, I will give them a bear to use to jump on the number line. For Kinesthetic kids I have them get up and physically show me how many numbers they are jumping either to the right or left depending on the addition or subtraction problem.
I love the idea of attaching a pipe cleaner with a bead about the number line! I'm hoping it helps those kiddos who struggle with that first hop!
These are very timely tips! Thank you for teaching me to think differently about using number lines in first grade. We do introduce it in first through our Envisions math program. I really like your suggestions and will definitely share them with my team!
I teach 2nd Grade. I do use the number line. I like the individual boxes that represent each number.
Very helpful! Thank you for the Number Paths freebie :)
We use a number line in our 3s, 4s and 5s classes. Our number line has numbers with a picture of a die on top of each number. The line is much bigger that your strip. Each number card is about 5x7 in. We have one we can use on the floor too. We want the kids to understand the placement of each number. We walk up and down the line. We are not adding in the younger years. We are looking for what number is next to 2 etc. How many spaces do we go from 2 to 4 etc. The 3s only go up to 5. The 4s eventually go up to 10. The Ks start at 10.
Great
continue the number path. Thank you
Great idea with unifix cubes.
Such a helpful video!
Hello. I do use number line, and I teach first grade.
I use a number line mostly for "1 more and 1 less" in first grade. I saw someone use a hack if putting a clear hot glue dot on each number dot so students can feel the bump for each number. I'm thinking of using that for my intervention kids who need lots of tactile/ hands on.

LOVE that idea!! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Susan. Great tips! I Have a question, please. Why is there no Zero on the number line? Would that not be the starting point of a number line? Thank you!!
I have a number line where the space between the numbers matches the length of 1 unifix cube. That way I can put the horizontal stack on the number line to show the relationship.

That's a great visualization for them!!
I use a frog to hop along the numberline. A frog does not just jump up and down he has to jump forward to get anywhere. This is how I introduce to concept of moving on a numberline.
Any tips on how to introduce movement into math lessons for second grade. We are doing place value and it’s getting quite boring for them.
I teach first grade and I do teach them how to use a number line.
Hi my son is having a hard time with number line and he is now in 3 grade do you have a video on this showing it on a whiteboard, would like to help him better understand

I suggest looking on youtube for a video. There are so many math videos for kids.
I tutor older kids and I've used magnets with airplanes or astronauts. They move the magnet behind the number line and it moves the little icon in front of it.
