Learn how to unlock open D minor tuning magic! This video will show you four easy steps that are vital in creating the perfect sound. Open D minor has a rich, full, and haunting tone. Buckle up for this spooky tuning!
If you like the guitar I'm using in this episode, be sure to visit @MuleResonatorGuitarsto learn more about their resonator guitars.
Open D minor tuning has one key difference between normal open D tuning: the G string is tuned to an F instead of an F sharp. Otherwise, the tuning is the same.
Once you get into open D minor tuning, you're going to learn how to play a D minor scale, create chord shapes, and even improvise over the key of D minor. It's tons of fun playing in this open tuning and can provide haunting tones that are perfect for the Halloween season!
In addition to talking about open D minor tuning, this week's Tuesday TAC Guitar Lick Challenge will utilize an open D minor tuning. So, if you're looking for a slick lick to throw into your D minor playing, be sure to check out the challenge this week!
Last but not least, we'll cover the latest acoustic guitar news you can use. Featured on this episode...

Open D minor is so comfortable. I always hear people talk about the intimidation factor regarding open tunings. Personally I feel completely opposite. Standard tuning just seemed unnatural, awkward and limiting. Before I heard about open tunings I just began adjusting the tuning on my own until I found comfort in the sound blessing my ears.
I've been playing guitar as a hobby for most of my life and nobody ever taught me about tunings outside of rego standard tuning. I've been listening to Son House and Skip James and now I'm able to play along and I'm able to create way more intuitive/personal sounds on my guitar a lot easier than in standard. TY so much for this tutorial! It did something special for me!
Mark Knopfler is also a big fan of the thumb maintaining bass accompaniment. His finger style second to none. Well worth exploring....
Really cool spooky tuning. I like playing early in the morning before the sun is up. D minor tuning is perfect for that. Thanks for more guitar fun.
I’ve played various instruments over the years but this video really opened my eyes to what I’ve been missing when jamming/improvising. Open d minor tuning is a thing of beauty, such a variety of good fingerpicking rhythms to be found. Lovely bluesy feel in the low DAD with the open strings
That was such a great lesson! Enjoyed it very much.
John Fahey’s song Red Pony is in D minor tuning and it’s really fun to play. You can find it on KZread if you type it in.
I'm a beginner and this was awesome. I have been trying for years to learn, mainly for songwriting, and this has opened up so many possibilities.
Just lost a whole evening to this.love the sound of this tuning really got into playing this and not a tab in sight which is unheard of for me. Cheers tony
My favorite horror movie: Hateful Eight where Kurt Russel accidentally smashed an authentic 1870s Martin guitar 😱😱😱

Why why would they have an 1870’s guitar on the set?

Or was it accidental? I don’t think it’s beyond Tarantino to have orchestrated this for publicity
I love open D minor tuning. It is the tuning I use most. Thank you for the multiple videos you have made on open D minor tuning. Very useful. I would love to see more info on this tuning, even if it is the saddest of all chords. :-)
Really enjoyed this episode, thanks. That Mule sounds incredible too
Tony, my 000-18 and D-18 were both tuned to DADGAD, so that was a simple enough fix. Thanks for a really nice intro to this tuning, just right for Halloween!
Diggin the new segment thanks Tony
Very succinct, clear, thanks for the explanation
always pick up something new from you. Thanks! The Shining
'The Thing' - Greatest Horror Movie ever ....'Underworld' is gothic sexy & full of horror
Excellent show. I learned a lot and can't wait to try out the D minor tuning. Favorite horror movie..."all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".
Loved this episode. When you first started playing it, I kept hearing "Wayfaring Stranger." One of the songs I learned when I first started playing (mid-60s), although I did even know about open tunings until years later! I love the old classic horror films, but I'm going to cheat and give two: Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" (OK - maybe not horror, but a must watch!)
Carrie! Was always a favorite of mine...classic! Plus I'm a huge Steven King fan. I'm going to costume party this weekend and when the guitars come out (as they always do) I'm surely breaking out the Dm tuning...thanks Tony!!!
A most excellent tutorial.
Open D has become my favorite tuning for my 12 string. I love the jangle and low base for contrast. Looking forward to giving this one a try. Not much a horror fan so my go to movies are Beetle Juice, Practical Magic, & Hocus Pocus.
DUDE THANK YOU
Great class,tony.the d tuning.fantastic.love the 1948 martin.sounds fantastic.i love your class every week.i love to learn from you.you are a great teacher.thanks tony.happy Halloween to you,my favorite holiday too.🖐️👍💡🎃😁🎸☕
Really like the daily challenge part of acoustic tuesdays Opens a lot of doors!
I like the weeks when you have something other than the standard guitar tuning. Open D minor is terrific. Favorite horror movie is The Ring.
Good stuff Tony. Movie: The Omen
😌🤗 awesome 👍
The first Hellraiser movie....and Grusome Twosome👍🏻
Sick Mavis man!
Just getting into open tuning and loved your lesson. Liked open d minor but prefer open d. My favourite horror film is The Exorcist as it's an absolute classic! Great work bro 👍
I always go to the classic, "Halloween, " movies and, "Friday the 13th." Ya just can't beat the classics, man! Hey, Billy Strings really pulled some beautiful tone out of that Martin, eh? Great show, Tony, and I'm going to tune my Yahma F-335 down to D Minor tonight and give it a go!
I absolutely love this tuning. I'm just getting back into guitar after a broken finger, and now I can only play with a slide on that finger, and starting to explore open tunings. Never realised D minor was a 'thing', but this is now my favourite. And I immediately spotted the Metallica-y thing. BUT, I hate Halloween. All that unnecessary wasted plastic. Piles of rotting pumpkins. Fabric wasted on a costume worn for a few hours. And the chemically coloured sugar we feed to our children. What's it all for??
My grandson says he wants to play guitar but was getting frustrated with fingering chords. He just does not have the dexterity yet. To keep him from getting frustrated and giving up, I am teaching open D major tuning to him. He can make music and can more easily learn about intervals and scales. Hopefuly he sticks with it and moves beyond open tuning but for now he is getting some basics, making music, and having fun.
Being not a guitar player, a couple years ago I taught myself open d minor in order to set some (someone else's) poetry to music. At that time, my goal was not to look at any tutorial videos for ideas. I ended up writing about 20 songs, from just teaching myself chords and finger picking patterns. I'm still not even sure what chords I found, but if be glad to share.
I just tuned my Jazzmaster to open D minor. It sounds killer!
I was very flattered that you chose one of my comments from the recent Progress Party. I hope that in some way what I shared can help other people.
My favorite horror movie is The Shining.
It’s the third, of course
Thanks for this video Tony. Any chance you could post the various d minor scale positions for DADFAD?
I keep my Beard round neck resonator in open Dm. I love the darker melodies. Favorite horror movies: Constantine, Midnight Mass
I just watched a classic horror(?) on hulu yesterday staring Vincent Price. It is a 1973 comedy horror called Theatre Of Blood. It is so much fun, I might watch it again today.
Brilliant tutorial, thanks for the lesson. How do I join the TAC Family?
Ghost Story. Chills without gore.
Check out Greg Joy - Ancient Sojourn ( in this tuning, but with capo on a 3 fret, great melody)!!!
Oh, favorite horror movie- Return of the living dead 1984.
Play show Troy Baker playing a cover version of 'Wayfaring Stranger' next week
The old black and white version of Frankenstein with Boris karloff
Easy enough my guitar is still in open D from a couple videos ago so I just have to tune the F# to F. Boom bam biggety!
Woo Hoo!!! I'm a Halloween baby!!! Um... do I win something!!!???
Dig it and army of darkness is the shiznit.
Favourite horror movie: Don't Ring The Doorbell. -stars Carol Kane. Don't Look Back comes a close second.
I'm always too lazy to try other tunings apart from drop d or down tuning.... I think I might surprise myself and actual give this one a go. Cheers. Transylvania 2 haha
It’s been recommended to me since I play mostly as a thumb strummer to try out an L-oo or a concert body shape. Any insight from you folks?
Open D minor sounds very reminicent of "Raven Black Night" by Gov't Mule, although IIRC it is tuned to dropped D...
Night of the Living Dead for sure! I am surprised you could do such a nice video on D minor playing that incredible Mule with all the talk about "spooky" Dm tuning and not mention Skip James. His signature lick is so great, and easy, maybe towards the end in creative part it would have been appropriate with the basic feel of something like, "Hard time Killing Floor Blues". But will give you a pass on it, for now, lol.
Would these formations apply to open C minor? Thank you😀
I play acoustic guitar from time to time(my brother in law let me borrow his bently acoustic) and I'm usually fine. I was playing a few minutes ago and my shoulder on my strumming arm started to hurt pretty bad. What could I be doing wrong?
Q: Can you play this? A: Sure I can. I just haven't learned how yet.
NIGHTBREED
Try too many angels by Jackson BROWN IN Dm open.
Wacko haha, Class of Nukem High, Tucker n Dale, Final Destinations, Salems Lot, Evil Dead 2 - whos laughing now ???
After telling my guitar it does it sound like it’s really in town am I using Turner?
@richardrose1292

After telling my guitar, that does not sound the same, even though I used Turner
And I have people ask me why do you have so many acoustic guitars? (Only 6 or so). Beats the hell out of tuning retuning, up, down and all around, now....(The shining...)
I like to put on the movie Cigli for guests, and go to another room and play my guitar. It's not really bad until they want revenge.
I inadvertently figured out how to play "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins when I was experimenting with that tuning. Ewan Dobson (canadian guitar champ one year) showed me that tuning. "dad fad"
Km
Ah, Dminor, the saddest of all keys…
Could they not have erected a more substantial street sign to memorialise John Prine than that tinnie tiny thing?
I hope your not demon chers
