When I was in marine biology in school, we were told by a visitor from a marine biology institute that, in most species, when their claspers get stiff, they spread apart much like someone making a peace sign with their fingers inside of a female shark the male flipped over, holding onto the now effectively paralyzed female, until he's ready to flip her back over, and flee, from a very angry lady fish Just thought that was worth sharing.

this is from merriam-webster's site The three main plurals for octopus come from the different ways the English language adopts plurals. Octopi is the oldest plural of octopus, coming from the belief that Latin origins should have Latin endings. Octopuses is the next plural, which gives the word an English ending to match its adoption as an English word. Lastly, octopodes stems from the belief that because octopus is originally Greek, it should have a Greek ending. Therefore all three are correct

  • @rainpooper7088

Tyler Nilson Octopus is not a Latin word, it’s Greek and there’s no believing about it. While „octo“ means „eight“ in both languages and „pus“ at least exists in both, it means very different things. „Octopus“ in Greek means „eight-foot“ (which is what an octopus is) while in Latin it would mean „eight-inflammation“. The Latin pus is where the English word „pus“ comes from. „Octopi“ is simply the result of pseudo-intellectuals trying to sound smart by applying Latin grammar rules to a foreign-sounding word without checking if it was actually Latin and proceeding to be smartasses about correcting the „peasants“ who used the completely valid anglicized plural „octopuses“. „Octopi“, unlike the other two, is linguistically wrong in every way, but because so many people ended up using it and feeling smart about it, they decided to call it a draw and say that none of the three versions is incorrect.

Oh YES! As much as I love unusual events and creatures, I HATE how they are constantly hailed as 'proof' of the supernatural, extraterrestrial, or unnatural. So much that I preemptively start rolling my eyes every time I hear about a 'monster' on the news that is always either a normal animal with mange or a waterlogged carcass that decayed to look freaky. As such I always adore a good, scientific explanation for the rare strange critter that pops up.

The third monster... I mean, I was like: "Ok, so the skin is still on so the head will look kinda like this before decomposition, the stomach is gone, its pretty big... Ok so: its a giant, fat, long dolphin right?" I actually never heard of the beaked whales before, even though I have quite a lot of biology education. And it is funny, that someone would try to argue against it if they knew these fat, long dolphins exist :D Its extremely obvious, to the point that a person that didnt know it exists (like me) guessed what it is :D

My explanations: Number 1: The head of the ten tailed beast that teleported only its head into our dimension by accident. Number 2:A sauropod from avatar that went to the wrong dimension when it went through the spirit portal. Number 3:A head of a dolphin, the body of a bird, the legs of an elephant and the tail of a whale to create a Dolirphale. Number 4:Someone was really inspired by Dr Wu in jurassic world that he created his own hybrid of a walrus, a whale and a snake.

Trey. Thanks to this video and the other, it has been taken into consideration that other animals can look completely different from what they originally were thanks to advance stages of decay past the bloated stage. A photo from the 80s (unsure if early or around the time DNA testing came into fruition) of, possibly, a decayed thylacine corpse popped up and looking at how it could be any number of animals thanks to the decay had got me thinking about this video. Thank you. You have helped myself, and many others, become a bit smarter with this bit of information.

And- wait, they explained it away with a creature that somehow washed into the BAY from the arctic? That's..extremely troubling. Yeah, nothing about that hypothesis holds up, you'll be glad to know that this 'legend' has been long forgotten by the local population :P

The first guy from Yale heard descriptions and the ocean nerd side of him yelled out, Massive Octupus monster. Imagine his disappointment when he got some flesh and he realized it was just some part of a whale

I remember finding a dead dolphin on the shores of Rancho Paloes Verdes, CA across from Catalina. It was myself (a 12 year old girl who was obsessed with cetaceans) and an 8 year old boy who identified it; the head was still attached and I could see the curved bottlenose but my creationist grandparents wanted to tell me it was a sea dragon from the bible.

15:27 So... that's a whale... How can you mistake a Whale for a "monster"... They even said "whale like tail and flippers".... That's a frickin whale... I'm laughing so hard...

Even though a lot of globsters can be explained the thought of outlandish creatures living in the ocean is pretty cool

Of course you can’t find E.L. Wallace. E.L. Wallace was, ironically, a Baird’s Beaked Whale.
