4 reasons why women choose freebirth

Melanie the Midwife reviews some of her own research from her PhD on freebirth. She Identifies that the reason women choose freebirth is that they believe it is the best and safest for themselves and their baby. The question really is, why doesn't the health system provide a service these women believe is safe.

Im in the US btw and freebirth is frowned upon... How wack is that!!! We are mammals!! We dont take our dogs to the animal hospital when they are laboring and they have multiples every litter.

But it can be those things, medical and emergency. Will you make it to hospital in time? I don’t see the point of risking it. Do dogs yell during labour? I can’t say what it’s like for dogs but childbirth is tough and there’s no guarantees wherever it happens. I realise there’s an element of traumatic past birth or medical experiences here but we need to use our heads.

@@ImosNendosalmost every hospital in the US takes at least 30 minutes to prep for a c section. If you call 911 in an emergency and are 30 minutes or less from the hospital, you will be getting into surgery at the same time as a patient who was already admitted. Emergencies are rare, often caused by the interventions themselves, and most can be managed at home completely or at least long enough for help to arrive.

A lot of women probably don't want a midwife in their house because they are just a minion of the medical system and legally bound to intervene in ways that women would rather avoid.

My reason for freebirthing my babies is because birth in a well-nourished healthy woman just works best when undisturbed. Every other mammal goes into their own space to birth. Also, it is hard to find a midwife that actually serves women and not just serves her ego. That’s my reasoning.

The abuse of women in childbirth is obscene. This is even in an extremely pro choice state where I am that gives no personhood to an unborn child until it is seperate from the mother. The abuse still continues.

I am pregnant with my 7th. I have had low risk births, with midwives. My husband delivered our 5th because he came so fast. I liked that one the best, just me and him :D With no one else around I was comfortable enough to make full on love with my husband not 30 mins before he was born...heehe. Can't do that with anyone around waiting to help...not comfortably and birth should be super comfortable.

I had a homebirth for my first birth 32 years ago...with a registered midwife because I had read a book called "Active Birth" and was convinced that a natural birth was for me! I LOVE THAT QUESTION...Why doesn't the health system provide the medical care to empower the women who want a natural birth during pregnancy and childbirth???????

I’m 24 weeks pregnant due in February and I’ve known for a very long time I wanted a home birth. I recently started considering freebirth because I honestly don’t feel like I want or need a stranger hovering over me telling me what to do. I feel confident in my instincts. I want to enjoy this experience with my Significant Other and my Mother, on my terms. I feel like I fall into catagory 4 and the 5th one you mentioned as well. (I live in the US, and the medical system is seriously scary here...)

I feel this way as well, both in the privacy and personal authority way (watching videos of midwife-attended births drive me crazy), and birth being natural and normal. The first time I heard of freebirths/unattended births was a documentary here on KZread a few years ago. I thought "that's a bit weird", but that was it, as I already wanted a home birth when the time comes. I just see that the majority of the population seems to think of birth as this scary, terrifying medical event that is always a hair's breadth away from mother or baby dying... and they don't even realize that many of the things that went wrong in hospital, wasn't "Oh, you're so lucky you were in a hospital, imagine THAT at home!", but in fact CAUSED by the hospital's interventions. And think, a woman having a well-prepared and well-researched freebirth today, is in a far better place than any hospital or home birth half a century to a century ago, with the knowledge and equipment she can have on hand. I have never given birth, I don't know what it's really like, but it never scared me. Like yeah... pain. But it will be over. Risk of injury and death? I do that every time I get in the car. I'm not nonchalant, one should be prepared for everything, but a normal birth is not a medical event, it's just as natural as breathing or eating.

I will be free birthing my baby mostly because for me the bond with my baby is for me the most important thing. In the hospital and with a midwife that is interrupted by many hands, sounds, noises, interruption and disrespect for the mama/baby unit. I want to be peaceful Undisturbed after my baby is born so we can properly bond, so that the right hormones flow and I am can focus on bonding with my baby and not worry about defending myself, arguing or answering questions. I also don’t feel comfortable doing the most intimate thing in my life sprawled open in front of multiple strangers, I don’t want to worry or absorb anyone else’s fears, problem, energies or egos. I also don’t want any authorities above me, I am the authority as the mama of my baby, I want to rely on me- my instincts and intuition, if someone else is there who “knows more than me” I know I will end up leaning on them and not trusting myself or going inward to find the answer that is there. Our bodies, babies and instincts know what to do if we stop going to outside sources for answers. No one knows your body or your baby better than you certainly not a doctor who sees you for 15 minutes or less every few months or a midwife who sees you maybe an hour once a month. You live in your body daily, you feel your baby- focus on connecting with you baby- tune inwards, learn to understand, listen and do as you instincts tell you. And lastly the chance of something going “wrong” in birth at home is about 1% because there are no interventions, distractions and your hormones flow strong when you trust the process. But the chances of having one intervention which will lead to many more is about 90% likely. For me the hospital is more dangerous than being at home in peace and only with people who love me and not strangers who don’t know me.

I'm sick of witnessing freebirth being presented as "high-risk". Women don't choose an unassisted birth although 'they would really prefer not to'. I myself have had an unassisted birth and I had decided against a hospital birth from the moment I knew I was pregnant. This was the greatest decision of my life. I am so glad that I did not have a midwife there. Ain't nobody going to tell me about what's happening with MY BODY and MY BABY.

After lots of educating myself I decided freebirth was the only way I would ever birth. I don't need anyone to save me or my babies. Waiting on my 5th baby right now. It is the most powerful experience ever. I totally understand wanting a woman to hold space but I can't imagine anyone who is capable of that for me. My partner and children have been all I want or need. I look forward to eventually holding space for other women who need/want it though. It should also be pointed out that some women choose to get outside care during pregnancy and others go full wild and free pregnancy and birth.

I live in Eastern Europe and over here a homebirth with a medical professional present is illegal. The only hospital I liked that offers a more holistic birth experience and is allowing a birth partner in the covid situation is 4 hours away and my husband doesn't want to pay the hefty bill for that plus an airbnb. I don't want to go back to my home country since I was in the care system as a child and I'm scared of being bullied by social workers and my baby being a target for adoptions as is what often happens. I have no choice but to give birth at home unassisted. I gave birth to my last child in a hospital. I didn't go in until I was at the pushing stage and it was a horrible experience. They forced me to give birth on my back in stirrups and there were about 5 doctors in the room. I don't want to have to go through all that again, especially since I am not even allowed a doula or my husband with me in hospital this time

I live in a relatively remote area of the fjords of Norway. The nearest hospital is one hour away. I'm not pregnant yet, so I don't know when I would be giving birth, but the winters here get cold, and the roads are winding through fjords and mountains. I have looked up midwives in the area - none would help with a home birth (which I want for personal safety, comfort and belief reasons as well as practicality). I will see if I can find a doula, but it looks like they don't exist in this region either (only 2% of Norway's population lives in this county) - let alone one that would attend a birth without a midwife. My options then, are to have a well-scheduled hospital birth anyway (my last option, actually), MOVE temporarily to a bigger city to give birth (and then move back with a newborn... ugh) ...or have an unattended home birth. It really sucks, because I would prefer to have a hands-off midwife or doula nearby, and emergency services within reasonable distance, but I live by a town of 7k people where there are no such options.

The second time, I showed up with a naturally progressing labor up omg which i was bullied into artificial labor and consequences.
