I should’ve added all my reasons of why I got rid of my Ioniq 5. (6 Reasons Why I Got Rid of it) To keep this short, I moved to a colder climate and the 2022 Ioniq 5 RWD was not capable of pre-conditioning the battery because there was no heat pump and with no heat pump there is a resistive heater which will use much more battery during colder weather. With all this, yes I could’ve still gotten a AWD Ioniq but the incentives made it better then to “upgrade”. Learned my mistake, because the dislikes are quite high 😅

I am very happy with my Hyundai Ioniq 5 spaceship on wheels and would not choose another car, certainly not a Tesla. In my opinion a soundsystem is not the first decisionmaker for a car.

Thanks, the four reasons in the video were on the weaker side, but I had a few others like not having AWD or a BMS/Heat Pump that also contributed to my decision as I moved to a colder climate.

For those disappointed with the Ioniq 5 stock sound system in both the SEL and Limited trims I would suggest an upgrade that will equal or exceed the Tesla Model Y sound system. Change all speakers to quality units (i.e.: Blam in front and Memphis in rear) and add a low profile sub (i.e.: Powerbass) and an amp (Memphis) to area under hatchback floor/cargo area. For best base response cut sound/ventilation ports in plastic panel between amp/sub area and rear seats. Breakers Sound and Performance in So Cal did a great job with my system. I highly recommend them.

We have both a Model Y and Ioniq 5 limited. As someone who likes a good sound system, I'm not sure why people are complaining about it in the first place. If you are looking for an "outstanding" sound system, you're never gonna look for a car with a stock sound system and just going upgrade with aftermarket speakers. Also the area is dependent on the chargers. Most of the chargers around my area are J1772s. Also, Telsas Customer support is horrendous as I had multiple outlets for the Ioniq in my area. Both are Great cars and I can't go wrong with either. I'm also the type of person who likes unique and different vehicles where nowadays you see a Tesla on every corner.

In terms of the sound system I was hoping for more for the price point of the car. Base audio systems in other cars, such as a Mazda, are quite good so I was hoping for more from Hyundai. In terms of service, yes it depends on your area. Current area is doesn’t has 2 Ioniq certified dealers and they aren’t the best but the Tesla SC has been quite good so far. The amount of teslas you see depends on your area too, prior to moving Atlanta had one every block. While my new city has none. I have seen like 5 in the last month.

@@SparkDrive yeah agree. People have to understand they can put a few extra bucks into a good aftermarket sound upgrade. I don’t really mind both car sound systems. But I get where people are coming from. Yeah it’s also super area dependent. I feel like soon enough especially with Tesla announcing there new chargers plan it’s going to be easier for all vehicles to charge and it will be less and less of an issue with time.

If leasing, the Ioniq 5 is a great deal. I got mine for $524/mo with $0 down whereas the Tesla Model Y was around $750/mo with $5000 down. I don't plan on owning EVs for more 6-10 years so I don't care to finance one. Tesla also doesn't allow buy out at end of lease, so it makes leasing a Tesla pointless. I've gone back and forth several time between the Ioniq 5 and Model Y and I honestly think the Ioniq 5 has the better overall package, although some things are subjective. I hated the ride quality in the Model Y, it's a lot stiffer, bumpier and noisier. I hated that it's just 1 big display to interact with 99% of the things, aside from steering wheel controls. The Ioniq 5 still has the volume knob along with other buttons, which is much easier to use without looking. Even though my trim was the SEL AWD, it's possible to get 350 or even 370 miles of range when disengaging the front motor and using just the rear motor. The Model Y gets around 310 miles at best from what I've seen, although I cannot verify this myself since I didn't get to drive one for that long. Yes, the sound system is subpar, but you can upgrade for like $300-$400 from what I've seen on the forums, so I'll end up doing that eventually. Also, mine does have a heat pump and battery preconditioning, so it's probably something they've added to the 2023 model.

  • @SparkDrive

    @SparkDrive

Good write up, I agree. Pros and cons with both models. The lack of buttons isn’t too bad but I wish there was separate AC controls. That’s the thing I would adjust the most. Mine has gotten about 330 miles of range so far but I have the upgraded wheels that deliver less range. On my Ioniq I was get 340 or so but RWD in my case. Maybe more with a heat pump as it is more efficient.

@@SparkDrive That's really good range for the Model Y. Is it always running in AWD or does it decouple? The Ioniq 5 will disengage the front motor if the regen setting is not i-pedal and not in Sport mode. I wouldn't be able to get above 300 mi range if using AWD all the time that's for sure.

Weird...ours has a heat pump and battery preconditioning. We live in a more rural area in the desert area of CA and while the coastal areas have good Electrify America service, ours sucks. Tesla has had more time to develop chargers across the land. Hopefully as more EV's become available this will change so I Agree on that point. I think I have to agree on the dealers when it comes to the EV side of the house. Two dealers within 30 miles of us don't seem to have a clue about our car. I like the Ioniq as I'm a big guy and the Tesla is just too tight for me. That and we found the Ioniq in our opinion honestly rode way better than the Tesla we tried.

A car is first meant to make you move... no? OTA is working even if I must admit that software improvements are very limited. About recharge, I don't have ANY issues here in Belgium...About battery pre-conditioning and heat pump, I have both and they work fine. Finally my dealership is just fine as well. I mostly listen to audiobooks and podcasts and almost never music so, if the words are clear, they got me. But I would never consider a Tesla. I have not seen a Tesla model that strikes me as attractive plus cannot stand musk. Love the look of the Ioniq 5. Heard that the 24s have cleared up some issues. I have a ‘23 I5 Limited (also in digital teal). I do really enjoy the car. I am not a Tesla fan generally because of a few reasons, but regarding the I5, I have been most annoyed with the charging issues related to level 2 48 amp AC charging at home. The charge port overheats at 100 or even 90 percent at that level so I must always downgrade the speed so the car doesn’t shut off the charging. Hyundai has admitted this is a problem, yet hey refuse to do anything about it and the dealers act as if they’ve never heard anything about this when you take the car in because of these problems. This is not a good way to handle customers. And there is a class action lawsuit against Hyundai regarding this very issue. Anyway, generally the car has been very pleasurable. Quiet, reliable, spacious… But if you need to quickly charge your car and that’s why you bought it in the first place and it doesn’t do that, and then the company that promised it would doesn’t stand behind it that says a lot. :( much as I enjoy driving it, I would probably not buy it again, unless Hyundai steps up and addresses the problem. Most all of my cars have been German and I’m just used to better quality control and dealer support. I sort of regret not having just waited a little longer, as more options have hit the market. Regarding the stereo, I am also an audio enthusiast, but the system does not really bother me since most of the time when I’m driving I’m listening to audiobooks. The BMW iX with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround is fantastic though! If you haven’t heard it, it’s definitely worth the price of admission, but then you have to like the looks of an iX. 😏

I'm in the market for a new EV. Just tested the Y and I have to acknowledge that the most memorable thing was undoubtedly the sound quality. I already have a BMW i3 so regen driving and high torque were not surprising (although the Y felt much more aggressive the moment you step on the pedal; curiously enough, the regen break felt like it disappeared in the final meters of stoppage, making me have to actually apply brakes, which felt rather stiff and resistive). I have to test drive the Ioniq again as the first time I was not in love. The looks of the I5 are just so unique. But the main issue that I have is that the relationship with the car feels very traditional: car comes with a determined amount of conveniences and that's it - the mentality of the old school car feature model. With Tesla, I think they did something super smart: the backbone is their competitive advantage. It seems to me that buying a Tesla is NOT buying a car, but rather buying an ecosystem where software is top-notch and permanently getting better, and the charging infrastructure is without compare. The car is the ACCESSORY. With Hyundai, the car is the PRODUCT and the rest almost seem like afterthoughts. If I could have an I5 with Tesla software and Supercharger organic access, I would not blink. As it is, it's super hard to choose because I like the I5 better, but I much prefer the Tesla experience. It feels very iPhonesque. It's not the best phone out there value-wise, but the Apple ecosystem is just incomparable. And every time I see a Tesla, I can't help but think of the Dragon Capsule. Decisions, decisions! I may just go with the I5 on a lease just to scratch the itch and eventually migrate to Tesla when I had "enough" :)

For all those who watched this video. I own a Ioniq5 and my wife has the Tesla model X. Ioniq5 hands down destroys my wife’s car. Everything this guy complains about is 95% BS. Sound system is great if you know how to set it up correctly. Updates there are not so many I see this as a great thing. 10 updates per month sounds suspicious to me more like 10 problems constantly been updated. We’re I live there are 20+ lighting chargers around me regularly available. I drove from NYC to Canada no problems lots of chargers around. My car does have a pre heating for the battery also. Thing this guy bought the bottom base line model. Availability ordered mine had it the next week. Dealership support has been great for me. Had the car now for 16 months absolutely love it as does my wife. Also the ioniq5 comes with blue link which is the dames as the Tesla control app. I can run my car on and off using my mobile. Also I can control all vehicle setting using my phone the climate control charge settings drive setting windows. Also can make the car drive to me. Now my wife’s car, sound system again it’s great if you understand how to play with the settings. Chargers hardly any near us and the ones that are near us almost always have a 1-2 hour wait time due to other people using them. Teslas pre heating is ok take a lot of time though. Tesla service sucks I mean it sucks. The amount of times we have to go get something fixed. Doors out of enlightenment trunk also. Trim rattling or falling of. Driving sound like driving a bag of tools lots of noise. Build quality for the price is pretty bad. Model-X was $120.000 the ioniq5 was $40.000 take away $15.000 that we got tax back on. Ioniq5 final price $25.000 😂. For what you get for the money ioniq5 destroys the Tesla. Oh one final mention, my wife uses my car a lot most of the time because she can’t drive hers due to an update or a software issue.

I do see your point and agree about the bad sound system. I'm not even an audiophile but even I could tell it was bad in my 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL AWD (the non-Bose sound system) There's a lot of community members who wrote guides on how to do a speaker swap and it was very easy to do and made a huge difference. It is good enough for me now after only $300 and two hours of my time. Love the car otherwise, but your other points are valid too, especially for charging networks. Hopefully things change in the next few years and more non-Teslas get access to the super charger network via the magic dock or adapters that people can purchase, especially since Ford seems to have that deal with Tesla in the next few years that might be an option down the road with the rest of us to just buy an adapter and have the best of both charging networks.

Let’s say you get a warning light and have it towed to them. They may not even know what to do and have to coordinate with Hyundai Corp. which can take months. Which is what I have seen other owners face. For example one owner on the Reddit page for the Ioniq. Got a error light for their BMS and needed a full battery replacement. Guess what? At their local dealer there were 5 already waiting for a pack. When shopping for a car you definitely should look at other things surrounding the car and not the car itself. Bad dealer experience or lack of reliable public charging can make or break your love for the car.

Hat you say is pretty accurate in my opinion. So here I am with academy 2023 Ioniq AWD 60k in my driveway. Why? Because my Hyundai Kona Ultimate is in a long scheduled recall for a replacement of the battery coolant due to some potential hazard. Car wasn’t done on day 1. I had to call 5 hours which the service department was closing and nobody had called me to give me the news. ( Hence the emergency delivery of the Ioniq 5 to my driveway. Their 41 loaners were all out already! I also asked them to do the current map update for me. I heard every lame and crazy excuse as to why they can’t do it and why I should do it. So I let them keep it day two to solve their problem while I tool around in the Ioniq 5. I spoke to dealership Service Manager and also told them about how Hyundai USA corporate customer service and therefore tech support is closed on weekends when I needed support while traveling away from home. ( Let me tell you Infotainment System and Interface is NOT Apple Car Play. ) Service Manager tells me Corporate Tech Support is closed for them too and that was not a happy place for him either. I spoke to General Manager about this “stuff” and he was polite and listened but it was easy to tell he was annoyed because he knew I sort of burned the place down because of their mess up’s, apparent broken processes and lack of simple communication with me, Dealership has 3.5 month wait for “wait for your car” repair in the lounge appointments. Oh and the story is the battery recall requires a special new machine that all the other dealers in my major metropolitan are arrived broken! So my dealer is doing other dealers recalls which started a couple o months ago. Something is broken between Hyundai Corporate and Hyundai USA and the Dealerships so where does the “loyal” customer stand. Finally the CCS D/C Fast Charging Network is looking somewhat better after my agonizing 5 years so far in an EV. And I blame all the non Tesla EV manufacturers waiting for someone else to solve the charging network issues and them got a little lifeline from Volkswagen and their Diesel-gate fiasco and the huge monetary settlement thus Electrify America which is growing at a snails pace. Meanwhile Ford and GM have abandoned CCS because their EV Trucks need a charging solution they can’t afford to build out. They are broke, late to the table and their EV products are late and mostly vapor ware. I really like the Ioniq 5 first impressions and I think my dealer expects me to switch to it today. But I am going to go check out Tesla and Genesis over the next few weeks first. I hope someone at Hyundai Korea and Hyundai USA is reading these comments, it’s much more than just great technology and design and they are not executing in all the areas they need to right now.

Great comment, I think more manufacturers will exit CCS and go to Teslas NACS. It’s just a matter of time. What they should have done is made a partnership with Tesla back in 2015 or whenever they were starting to develop their first EV and learn from them.

So you got rid of a car that didn't need a bunch of 'over the air updates' for a car that needed to be updated 10 times in the first couple months (presumably because it needed fixing or wasn't finished before sale? Look, I like SpaceX, but this video is not about why I shouldn't buy an Ioniq 5 and more why I should by a Moddle Y. I like to get both pros and cons for any purchase, this is not a cons video for Ioniq 5 which is what I thought it would be.

Watchout, the ioniq5 high voltage battery is very very very expensive. Sure it comes with a warranty like any other EV. But just like any other EV, the warranty does not cover any physical damage caused by road hazards , your insurance will. Ofcourse any modifications to your car that directly damage the main hv battery can also void the warranty of the battery.. Ofcourse HV battery failure this doesn,t happen often. But it does happen.. most of them will be covered under warranty.. but if you ever accidentally damage the hv battery by yourself, you will have to replace it and the price on the ioniq5 is twice the price of a Tesla 3/Y . Ioniq5 hv battery replacement cost over $40k USD parts+labor . Tesla hv battery cost well under $20k. Audo E tron hv battery is also very expensive. Just do your homework , and get the quotes from hyundai before getting the ioniq5..

I'd rather have a comfortable, quality built car with an average speaker system than a harsh riding, poor quality Tesla with a better sound system. I guess for you the quality of the sound is more important than the quality of the car itself. I hope you enjoy listening to your "superior" sound system while waiting for Tesla to fix the many issues other owners have had with their cars.

@@GOOBENsticks - and why are you getting rattled by my opinion? Is my opinion less important than your's? I do hear about other others build issues but mine is completely fine. No issues and the ones I had they fixed. Panel gaps just like my Ioniq and the suspension might not be as good it is much better than my friends older Tesla. Also was not just those 4 reasons but also my RWD didn’t have a heat put or a battery management system and I was moving to a cold climate. That reason is tailored to me and didn’t think anyone else would want to know that as they would not relate.

@@SparkDrive - Thanks for clarifying the additional reasons. The heat pump and battery conditioning is important, especially the heat pump in cold or hot climates as it uses much less energy to do the job. And while a RWD is good for range, the AWD is sure fun to drive!!!
