4 Movies That Are Actually Propaganda | YBOC (Star Wars, Top Gun, Angry Birds)

Комедия

For as long as there has been a film industry, concerned parents have warned kids that movies like Star Wars, Top Gun, World War Z, and Angry Birds are trying to turn them into violent, promiscuous, Satan-worshipping commies. Well, it turns out they may be right -- though half the time it's not even clear if the filmmakers are even aware of it. "Doctor" Jordan Breeding returns once again to diagnose the state of the film industry and hopefully also escape from a CIA Black Site.

Not really, trying to force political agendas in entertainment is a modern thing. Why do you think Hollywood is making films like they are today? We can’t simply be entertained anymore. Your not buying a ticket to be entertained by a movie. Your buying admission to a day class on liberal politics.

@@yanipheonu eh I suppose it is. Unless I’m watching a movie about lawyers or elected officials I kinda prefer it at a minimum. It’s not crazy to notice a dramatic uptake in political rhetoric though. Writers used to be a lot more subtle and creative about it. Essentially treating the audience like they are intelligent. Consider Star Trek as an IP. TNG and DS9 certainly had plenty of political themes. They tended to present an idea and leave it to the audience to ponder the philosophy. Much the way universities used to be. Now consider Discovery or worse still Picard. Both push messages with as much subtlety as a freight train. They don’t present a concept. They hammer in an idea and ridicule any concept of alternate thought for good measure. That’s my point. An audience is always at liberty to their own personal meaning from a story as presented. Modern Hollywood by contrast is determined to highlight with unsubtle exposition exactly what you are supposed to think.

What’s ironic is how most people see Hollywood as liberal. I get why that is, given the political views of most celebrities and the overall government of LA but the inner workings of shows and movies is definitely conservative. For every celebrity that says “Black Lives Matter”, there’s 10 producers that pass over a black actor in favor of a white one for “marketability”. Concepts like “the military is awesome”, “guns solve all problems”, “cops are always right and rules get in the way”, and “everyone should marry someone of the opposite sex and divorce is terrible” all pop up in movies constantly. Not to mention how cartoonish racists, homophobes, and sexists are to the point where IRL ones genuinely believe that they aren’t just because they don’t act like the ones they see in movies. Honestly, there’s a lot that goes under the radar of people that it’s kinda weird.

The MCU movies literally get taxpayer money in addition to being able to get to use military equipment. Specifically it’s thanks to the military’s Ministry of Propaganda. That’s literally what it’s called. This all is why pretty much every movie with military in it paints them in a good light. It’s because it’s not only profitable but a lot cheaper since the military tends not to rent out their stuff to muckrakers. Though the movie that took the utter piss out of this is easily Independence Day: Resurgence. The original movie was definitely military propaganda but the sequel integrated recruitment ads into its marketing. They literally made recruitment ads that weren’t clearly labeled as recruitment until near the end. The military’s recruitment methods these days has definitely passed the level of creepy and disturbing. I’m just glad kids don’t fall for it as recruitment is also at an all-time low despite all this.

#4 - That allegory becomes just a "bit" problematic given the Ewoks are *heavily* implied to eat people, but sadly even that fits with George Lucas's generally terrible depictions of minorities, even other Jews. #3 - There is something darkly hilarious about _Top Gun_ being so effective in its recruiting that it probably indirectly led to Don't Ask, Don't Tell eight years later given The Pentagon helped finance something gayer than an album by The Village People. #2 - So the movie is even *less* faithful to the book than I already knew? More reason to never watch it. #1 - ...Speaking of things to pretend don't exist, I will just continue to do that with _Angry Birds_ in general.

Another notable Star Wars political messaging moment is the Phantom Menace. It was written in a grudge fueled anti-Republican haze. Nute Gunray, the leader of the Trade Federation, is named after Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan. The goals of the Trade Federation and the message about the perils of deregulation/neoliberalism were directly inspired by Newt Gingrich's 1994 Contract with America messaging. Like Lucas watched the news and started writing the script directly inspired. The Reagan part is because Lucas has hated Reagan ever since he used the name Star Wars for the SDI program without his permission. Shame the Republican inspired villains also had to be racist Japanese caricatures.

pretty sure WW2 and The Nazis were the inspiration for the expansion of an empire due to technology and extended who extended their reach too far. Storm Troopers. 50 shades of Gray. Tailoring preferences for the uniforms. Still unexplained Nazi learning curve. Tons of the occult and cults being involved. Seeing as how Lucas grew up in between WW2 and Vietnam. Vietnam just being catalyst for his passion and America triggered his fears that they'd become the new Nazis. And one could connected this story to the ageless conflicts occurring in the Middle East. .. OOOooooh KZread won't allow monetized creators (especially ones with corporate backers) to discuss Nazis, or how they were crucial in the formation of the CIA via Operation Paper Clip.

I just after it came out I saw someone make a video about Angry birds being anti immigrant propaganda (I’d never seen it) and I thought it was a joke but the longer I watched it the stronger the argument got. Like there was evidence it wasn’t just an accident coming from an undiverse crew not thinking through implications and instead low-key intentional but possibly subconscious venting about xenophobia through fiction like a slightly subtler H. P. Lovecraft

Also when there is looser borders there is often seasonal workers or those who live in both counties but that’s not relevant because I didn’t say the film was specifically anti immigrant worker I said anti immigrant and them going home or not and why does only applies to real situations not caricatures which is what people are accusing it of.

You do know that in Lovecraft the beings of the outer dark don’t care right? They neither love nor hate, they simply don’t care. It’s a serious case of jumping the shark to see racism in a film made based on a mobile platform game. That is serious personal political projection. Let us not forget, they pigs stole the eggs, you know their unborn children? See it in the context of the movie. I don’t know about you but if someone breaks into my home and attempts to rob me hey had best pray I don’t catch them.

The really funny part is that when I was into Angry Birds, when I played with the plushies, I made it about colonialism. Like the execution probably wasn't that good given I was 8, but it's just funny how I came up with the opposite idea of how to built an actual plot from it.

You’re accusing others of projecting while inserting things others didn’t say to make a strawman 4. Red is harsh before the pigs do anything and saying an entire race is on board with pretending to be nice to infiltrate a country and kidnap all the children isn’t a good look especially when it gets so close to a lot of racist “white genocide” rhetoric.
