4 LIFTS TO DEVELOP INSANE JIU JITSU STRENGTH

Today we're covering 4 exercises or lifts to help develop strength that directly applies to jiu jitsu. Trust me, I love technique, but if we can get an edge by increasing strength then I say let's go for it. The exercises I cover in this video will help increase the functional strength you need while training and even sparring in BJJ. I have more exercises that I use to increase strength for jiu jitsu so expect to see more videos on this topic in the future. Until then, keep up the good work and let's get that BJJ performance edge.

56 year old blue belt, been lifting consistently since I played football in high school, so 40 plus years…just started doing Zercher squats a few weeks ago…thought I was a pretty strong squatter, but those things humbled me!! He’s not joking, start light!

I do judo not Bjj but I love zerchers..... I started doing them due to injury related mobility loss in my ankles and shoulders, and found out that they are perfect with the isometric upper back and postural benefits. Man they are great I usually do bodyweight or slightly above.

High rep zercher squats are so good. Definitely carries over well to the mats. The high reps in that zercher position builds mental toughness like no other, and the anabolic response after doing a couple sets is pretty potent.

Great video. You definitely know what you are talking about and your video is motivating me to find a MMA gym so I can learn Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai and MMA. However if I had to pick only one martial art / sport to train in then I will probably have to pick Ju Jitsu since its foundational and probably the most important martial art anyone can learn in my opinion but I also have a great urge to train Muay Thai because I've never done striking sports before and I would love to be good at striking one day. But everything in due time and one of the gyms I'm looking at Straight Blast Gym does both I think. EIther way sorry if I'm talking your head off but I really enjoy your video and I appreciate all the info you have given. As far as the exercises go in my opinion they were all really good and all had very practical purposes but I think the most important ones were the weighted glute bridge and the gi pullups and the gi pullups have the most applications and can be used in just about any position so it has more applications but the glute bridge helps out a lot when it comes to mount escapes which is vital for beginners to learn. Again I really appreciate the video and I hope you come up with more great videos like this.

This is a great list. I have no argument with any of the exercises you've selected. The only two minor tweaks that I've found that work for me: 1. I prefer the bridge/hip thrust with my back on the floor instead of a bench. It may be due to my height (6"4") but I seem to get more benefit with that variation. 2. If you have access to a press bar (aka football bar) The floor press becomes even more practical. The parallel grip of that style bar is very shoulder friendly and also seems to correlate with the natural position you find arms and hands when on your back. Thanks for the excellent instruction.

Solid vid, always did a ton of zerchers back when I was competing in wrestling. the only thing I would say to add to the list of mandatory movements is a heavy turkish get up. Hands down the best movement to replicate trying to get someone off you when you're on your back and have your arms extended. If you can do heavy turkish get ups for 8+ reps per side while fatigued, then you'll be ready for just about any struggle when put on your back. It's honestly probably the most difficult and unfun movement there is but it gets you damn strong at the weirdest angles.

Wow man great video. As a 44 Yr old purple belt I've come to the realisation that I need to do some strength & conditioning training. From being a carpenter half my life my grip is on point (yeah I'm that guy) but injury prevention is my main goal. How many reps & sets do you recommend from the squats & presses? Thanking you in advance. Am subscribing now for sure btw.

Good advice here for sure. I would add abductor and adductor machine into this as well. Building strength here tremendously helps with guard retention as well as the ability to at least slow down some types of smash passes by being able to raise the knee/hip against resistance. These exercises I also find just help with overall knee stability and preventing injury.

Glad you liked it. If you have a workout buddy, you can still do the floor presses with dumbbells. I’d recommend finding a pull up bar or even using ceiling rafters for your gi pull ups. Instead of the zercher squats, you could do goblet squats with a dumbbell. You’ll have to use less weight, but they are similar. And you can do hip thrusts with dumbbells on your hips. That should give you some decent dumbbell replacements.

  • @willbrooksofficial

Thanks my man. I mean, they are built to be pretty tough but I like my nice gis to stay nice. If I were you, I’d order a cheap gi top to be used in the gym for pull ups, rows, etc and just use a towel in the meantime until the cheap gi arrives. You can find them on Amazon for relatively low cost and that can be your “workout gi” for the rest of your life.
