I almost didn't watch this; like what's new about a 4 jaw. I've been hobby machining for 20 years, read dozens of books, watched hundreds of videos, and I've had 12 machining and CNC articles published. This is the coolest! I never thought of it, never heard of it. I used it yesterday and the day before. Many, many thanks. Jerry "Ozzie" Pryor

Saw Joe P's video using the same method but with rubber bands. Tape may be a little better, then I though of using a bicycle inner tube. Stronger and more secure that rubber bands, and reuseable. I figure most bike shops would give you a shot tube.

Good to see you are learning from the best but you could have given him the credit. I know you like the gauge reading vertically but if you have it reading horizontally you can get at the two opposite key holes, your way you can only adjust one at a time. Also you don't have you futz around with awkward screws on the DTI stand as, if you mounted it to the cross slide, you can use the CS feed screw to zero the gauge, but everyone to his own.

err sorry Dale but I had to give you athumbs down on this one.You ex colonial chaps seem to have made some progress but apparently not enough Here's what a man from over the pond would do. Firstly centre punch the point where you want the piece to turn, this can be offset which your system can't do,then using the tailstock centre you place another centre between the centre punched hole and the tailstock.Put your dial guage near the chuck on the intermediate centre,I use the centre from a dividing head as it has a parallel part, and go from there. If I find your video on half angle screw cutting ,I'll leave a comment to show you a far quicker and more practical method of doing it.Thanks for all the effort that you put into making the videos

I have to thank both of you for new techniques to align square stock in the chuck. It's not about one technique being superior to all others; it's about gathering a rich repertoire of methods to handle various problems. Every one of these techniques has certain flaws and advantages, and we pick the one that works best in the situation we are faced with. As with all things in the machinist's art, There's More Than One Way To Do It, and that's a great thing.
