This was the year that George Rogers won the Heisman. Before he went to S. Carolina, his high school played my school from time to time. It was like watching a grown man playing with boys. I remember watching George run uuuuup and then dooooown the field all game long. Crazy.

It was great to watch college football back in the 1970's and '80's when the star tailbacks would carry the ball 35 to 45 times a game! Stadiums would be filled to see heros such as Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell, Billy Sims, Charles White, George Rogers, Marcus Allen, Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier, Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, and I let's not forget about Eric Dickerson, Marcus DuPree, Lorenzo White, Emmitt Smith, Anthony Thompson, and Vaughn Dunbar. There were a lot of others that I didn't mention, but they were all great, amazing athletes!

Guys, the passing game wasn't "terrible" in 1980. It's just that the rules favored the running game (which is how I think it should be). Today, everybody thinks a "great game" is 63-56, not 7-0.

I'm from Scotland and right into what is known here as football (soccer) but also getting into American football and attracted to College Football, seen a few games that are newer and just watching this, i do prefer the older style, its more brutal and less start stoppy and more continual which i agree with you should be the way today. I mean Herschel Walker i think, i'm not sure, has his bleeding jersey tore to f**k. Also apparently SEC is the best conference?

Caveman 1 passing teams have looser defensive lines that by necessity play different in practice. Rules favoring passing creates a snowball effect of weaker defenses, easier pass yardage. A team can go up 21-0 then fall behind 21-28, then win 42-28. It’s like watching a pinball machine. If you want an example, try watching the CFL-a 21-0 lead means nothing in it. It used to be that being down 21-0 was almost certain doom, because the more brutal line play of a running team would wear out another team. That is not the case now.

Absolutely get what you mean, like a war of attrition and one side taking all the blows from the other teams defense, the other side who had a heavy scoring session just not letting anything past. It seems to me, when you watch now, its like the looser defense lines are such that its expect both sides will score heavily. Thats just wrong to my mind, in football or Soccer, the defense is key and clean sheets i.e. not letting anything in at all from the other side whilst winning is a side objective along with winning naturally. Same with Rugby and most other teams sports, the opponent doesn't necessarily get anything from the game and the bread and butter of a good manager is to get the best out of his defense, not concede as well a win. Its just weird to my mind that its allowed to be that open. Its finding the right combination right enough between being able to construct tight defensive lines like the old and having a safe game. To my understanding thats why things like the flying wedge and many other formations were dropped and less men at the back?

Caveman 1 I really used to love this game. College football was different. It was America’s real past time, even though baseball fans hate me for saying that. It’s nice talking to someone who appreciates our old game even though you’re from Scotland. Here on KZread you can enjoy tons of old matches.

Thanks prsonmike. This is one of those “under the radar” great rivalries. On the West Coast ( where I live), people overlook this game. But I get the feeling that these schools don’t like each other, and always highlight this game on the schedule. Just ask Georgia in 2019!

I confirm Georgia vs South Carolina is a huge rivalry in the Deep South.

Only a few games in college football history have you got 2 heisman winners. Another game was Walker's last year and bo Jackson's freshman year. Troy Smith and tim tebow played in 2006 Charlie ward and Danny Wuerffel Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow

I went to the game with my late father and despite the loss which was a killer it was a fun day. Eddie Leopard the SC kicker and Jeff Hipp who played Free Safety at UGA were my teammates in high school.

Walker's HUGE run is at 52:56.....

Fastest big man I ever saw. He looked like Deion Sanders on that run. Three guys had the angle and all fell short.

He took the hand-off at the 19-yard line. I clocked him at around 9 seconds to the goal line in pads, making two cuts and on his 23rd carry of the game. More impressive than Bo running into the tunnel at the Kingdome

Two great backs. Hershel had a rip-a-away jersey. They eventually banned that type jersey.

230lb O-lineman? Geez that's tiny.

It’s amazing how small football players were back then. It’s the evolution. Herschel walker at 220 was considered huge back then. Not so much now. Average back now is 235.

In 1980, unless you were BYU or other teams in the WAC, passing attacks were not very sophisticated. This was age where the running game was king. A RB always won the Heisman ( including Rogers and Walker), and was usually the #1 pick in the draft.

I remember watching this game on TV at the time. On that 76 yard run in 3rd quarter, I was sure the safety had the angle on Walker. But, then as always, speed kills.

Vince Dooley was alo a defensive coach and one of his mantras was to never put your defense in a bad spot. So if it meant a risky pass which could mean a turnover or run the ball and punt he'd choose the run and kick the ball away playing the field position game.

College football is so much better now!

If you like games that look like arena football. They need to change a lot of rules. Especially the one that says a defender has to look back for the ball during pass plays or its defensive pass interference, that's a BS rule that benefits the offense.
