We set off to make a variety of instruments capable of measuring durations of time, and then set them to the test to see which one is most accurate: a water clock, an hourglass, sundial, candle Clock, or a control of someone's internal clock inside a sensory deprivation tank.

|| ABOUT ||
Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

We used to cut our selves with those razors at work dealing with a shit load of stickers and tape, now we just spray and wait a minute and then just scrape gently or just lift them off.

    I make my own time keeping devices all the time. I work with electronics so for digital stuff I almost always need a clock signal generator to keep everything in sync. Just like in a computer. Usually a quartz oscillator or , if I want something slower a 555 timer, which consists an 8 pin chip connected to a capacitor and 2 resistors to set the frequency.

    The sundial (with no marks) has "sunrise", "noon", and "sunset". (Noon:shortest). A water drip (or candle) also doesn't have "hours" marked - but you can just count drips (all freaking day) until you get some total count. Say it was 15,000. Then you're *choosing* how many hours you want to have in daylight. "Twelve sounds good" leads to 15,000/12=1250. This many drips per hour. Next day: Make a mark on your sundial after that every 1250 drips. You still don't need to know "angles" or anything - just count. Now realize "Well, crap. We need to do this on the summer solstice - the longest day of the year." And the additional problem "What about night time?" But by going back-and-forth between two or three methods, you can take your one arbitrary decision (How many hours are in a day?) and break it up noon-to-noon and arrive at 24-hour clocks.Which manages for the thousands of years before springs.
