4 DAY CROSS COUNTRY TRAIN IN COACH! (a 78 hour journey)
COAST TO COAST IN COACH? IDK about that. But for $150 per person?! Yeah let’s do it, starting with the California Zephyr!
In this video, we’re sharing our entire experience traveling from San Francisco, CA to New York City, NY. In a train. In economy class. Think sleeping in an airplane seat for 3 nights. Imagine the best views while you relax and sip a refreshing drink. Imagine someone poops their pants. Imagine late night guitar jam sessions. Imagine you just took the trip of a lifetime on one of America’s most scenic train rides! That’s what the California Zephyr has to offer. That and so much more.
Will we survive coach class? Physically, yes! But emotionally, we might need to see a therapist after this one.
We’re excited to put on some serious miles to our MILLION MILE goal with our first TRAIN RIDE! And we did it Meghan & Matt style by just diving off the deep end. What did we get ourselves into!?

The majority of Amtrak rail(tracks) are not actually owned by Amtrak, they run on Union Pacific and BNSF rail(tracks) Plus Passenger trains are considerably smaller than most freight trains, as freight trains have strict schedules to operate on.
I took a 7-train Amtrak trip thru 24 states in September and enjoyed it. Some notes: Amtrak has connecting bus service from San Francisco to Emeryville, which I believe is free for ticketed passengers. The water fountains are to be avoided but Amtrak is generally good at supplying all the bottled water you want. They are generally very good at keeping the bathrooms clean. In the cafe I recommend the turkey & cheese sandwich and the cheese stromboli. They are beginning to let coach passengers eat in dining cars, but at a cost ($20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, $45 for dinner), but it is worth spending the money at least once on a long trip. And if you're going to sleep in coach, use noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds! And $150 coast to coast is a great bargain, even with the problems.

Just an FYI- the Amtrak Lounge in Chicago has fantastic shower rooms and a day pass for non-first class passengers runs $35 though they sometimes have coupons and other ways to get in for frequent travelers. Even though we always get a room to go cross country, we'll take showers there to break up the trip from the tiny on-board showers over the 4 days. Unlike NYC lounge, they do not have meals available in the lounge but they do have snacks and drinks.

@@Meghanandmatt Thank you ! ☺️☺️☺️
Very well done video. It was heroic to do this journey all in one shot and you are only the second vlogger that has posted this kind of trip (after Eva zu Beck). However, there is a reason why virtually nobody does this trip straight through - although it is an adventure, it is quite grueling to not have a proper night's sleep for so many nights. When I did this trip (in coach also) in October 2021, I decided to make it as easy possible for me. So what I did was to break the trip up into segments and stay in some cities on the way for a night (or two). Then you would take the same train the next day (or two) and continue your journey. This can actually be cheaper than booking sleeper cars for both trains (but will make the trip longer, of course). My first stop was in Reno. I did a 24-hour sightsee of the town, while getting a decent night's sleep in a hotel within walking distance of the train station. Then I continued to Denver, where I spent two days and nights seeing the city. Then I got back on the train and continued to Chicago. After a night there, I took the train to NYC. Since the train leaves Chicago in the evening of the next day, just have your hotel hold your bags behind the desk and come back for them 90 minutes before the train leaves and then head to the station. The beauty of this plan is that you won't have more than one night in a row in the seats to sleep, and can make it up when you get to your hotel. Lastly, I found that you have to change your way of thinking about sleep when in the seats. You are not going to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Your plan should just be to take multiple naps whenever you get tired, whatever time of day it is. And yes, a neck pillow is essential. You can even sleep sitting up with it. Eventually, you will get enough sleep to be able to function!

I am so glad to find your video. I took the Zephyr last year. Cross country in Qctober and absolutely loved it but I was in a family bedroom...got it with points but hard to afford it when just paying. I was wondering what coach would be like on Zephyr for that long trip. I think when you book ahead and get a decent rate on a roomette it's actually worth it Because you not only get the dining car food and atmosphere. that's in the dining car. But you also get the attendant that gives you blankets and free water and will even bring food to your room if you want that service. I will definitely do the Zephyr again but i'm pretty sure I'll book a roomette..

My top hint. Pick a train that is not crowded, so you can get twice as much space by having a vacant seat next to you. Amtrak's website predicts that with an icon that shows you what the percent occupancy is.

That’s a great tip for sure!
0:30 For the future, Amtrak provides a dedicated bus from SF to Emeryville that you can book with your ticket online for like $1 extra. All you have to do is set your origin as "San Francisco" instead of "Emeryville" Because of how weirdly screwed up their online booking system is, sometimes booking with the bus is even cheaper than just starting from Emeryville.

Hey Meghan & Matt: There are coach seats in the lower level of the Superliner coach cars, and they, IMHO, are WAAAAAy better for sleeping at night: 1]No traffic through the cars all night long, 2] Senior folks, and so, the Amtrack car attendants REALLY enforce QUIET in this area! 3] you are in the lower part of the car,, so no swaying from side to side as the train goes along.

Mikeymutual is wrong. I just did a dummy booking and the website allowed me to choose between upper and lower level in coach, no questions asked about disabilities. If you book a sleeper, the only handicap accessible rooms are on the lower level of Superliners- that may have been what he was thinking of.
@mikeymutual5489

@@stephenkehl7158 Mikeymutual is not wrong. The 12 coach seats on the lower level of Superliners are reserved for people that have mobility problems that can't use the steep stairs in the train. If you book a lower-level seat, it is assumed that you have a disability. If you book one without that issue, you might be forced to move upstairs.
@stephenkehl7158
Жыл бұрын
@Mikeymutual I’m on the Empire Builder right now. As it happened, I was standing in the vestibule of the lower level, waiting for the dressing room to be available. The conductor was there, ready for the Devils Lake ND stop. I pointed to the lower level cars, explained that there was someone I was chatting with online, and asked if the lower level was only for HC, and what would happen if someone showed up and didn’t have the need. He chucked a bit and said that’s what the lower level was intended for, but they stopped that practice decades ago. He said anyone can book them. They’re a favorite of older folks that, while not disabled, don’t like to climb stairs, and families with young kids often book a lower because it’s easier to keep an eye on the kids. So of course they’d never reassign them to the upper level if they booked lower and weren’t disabled. If you do a dummy booking, before you hit the Find Trains button, there’s a section “Passenger with Disability or need help?” and then to contact Amtrak. Nothing about booking an upper or lower level, and nothing about it on the page where they give you the option. So, yes, anyone can book a lower level seat, and they won’t make you switch.

Are you allowed to bring your own alcohol in the Zephyr? Thank you for this amazing vid. We are prepping to do the same in July 2023 and this helps a lot to plan our trip.

It's only allowed if you book a sleeper car room. So it is not allowed in coach.
I took Amtrak once in 1981 and the bathrooms were in bad shape! Nice to see things haven’t changed. What did you do with your stuff when you went to the observation car? Take it with?
@Meghanandmatt

Haha wouldn’t be surprised if it was the exact same bathroom from 1981. We took all our valuables with us in my backpack but left the rest at our seats

It's because they are subsidized. They have no incentive to make anything much nicer because it's not profit driven. I'm 55, and those trains are basically the same as when I was 5. The trains I've taken in Europe are charming restaurants, and Amtrack is a school lunch cafeteria.

Do you recommend the N or S side for your coach seats, seeing as that's your "homebase" for the trip? I'm asking for the Emeryville to Chicago portion, the Zephyr. I understand in the observation car you can flip flop sides but you are tied to same set of coach seats, correct?
@Meghanandmatt

We sat on the north side, I’m not sure how the views were on the south side but we didn’t spend much time in our seats and sat mostly in the observation car! Yes we were both tied to the same set

@@Meghanandmatt thanks for answering so fast. Planning a possible Zephyr trip west then down to San Diego to visit family with SW Chief trip back home (near Cleveland) in October for a total of 2 weeks. I guess I have a follow up question. Do you remember sitting more on the N or S in the observation car? And thanks in the video for not just a passing mention of the offerings in the cafe car.

Definitively you should try a Trans-Siberian Train one day when all goes back to norm. 7 days non-stop for $300 per person in a 2nd class sleeper.

Did you guys leave the backpacks on the seats while you were in the observation wagon? Do you pay extra for a shower, or can you sleep in the car and use them? Another couple travels by train directly, and they said in Coach is better for just one night.

The smell of poop is even worse on the Lake Shore Ltd if you're in the roomettes as the toilettes are actually in your room and as you can't open windows you can smell poop every time someones done one when they open their door and fills the corridor with the stench.

@@MeghanandmattIt's possible you guys did find it but didn't show it off in the video. On both of my long distance Amtrak coach rides, underneath the seat there was a leg rest which you can pull up to provide support for the lower half of your legs. I found it super helpful for comfort.

2:51 They found it. I happen to be leaving today on an epic trip using USA Railpass- I have an inflatable footrest that fits between the legrest and the next seat to provide full support for my legs. And earplugs to muffle those 1am coughed.

Apparently that one guy who crapped himself did not know the number one rule about writing Amtrak. NEVER EVER eat Taco Bell before getting on a long-haul train trip.
12:50 There is no such thing as "economy" on Amtrak! That is an airline term! It is called "coach class" on Amtrak, as opposed to "sleeper class."

Bring along a washcloth and a bar of soap, at least, makes for a freshening up before bed. A towel if you can fit it in your luggage, otherwise I use my t-shirt from that day to dry off. I use a hoody and sweat pants for pj’s.
