Amtrak’s California Zephyr

One of the longest rail journeys in the country and one of the most scenic in the world, Amtrak’s California Zephyr crosses from Chicago to the Bay Area. Traveling by train is a personal favorite of mine, so I thought I’d make my offering to cover this beautiful route from end to end.
(Filmed over the course of three trips in July 2023, August 2023, and March 2024)

    I've seen many Zephyr videos now but I liked this approach of summarizing the journey as it happens, making it feel like a travelogue rather than a description of the train itself.

    I took the zephyr west for the 3rd time in a year last week. Roomette is the way to go. I always get the steak for dinner with shrimp appetizer and cheese cake. It's the best. I think I had my fill taking this train for a while. I'll probably get the urge to do it again in a few months. I always do, its addicting.

    Totally agree! I’m a steak guy too, but I foolishly (and partly for the video to show other meals) did not order the steak on my first night only to have my dinner disrupted on the second night 2 of 3 trips so I never got to get the steak! Next time I’m for sure getting it first chance I get because you never know when you’ll have dining car issues! Haha And I totally get you, it is kind of addicting.

    Loved the history, thank you for sharing. I took the same route in March 2022. I loved every minute. I had snow as well in the Rockies. I’m set to ride the Empire Builder next month.

    Thanks! I was afraid the history might bog the video down, but I kept it anyway…. The snow really does add to the beauty! It’s been a while since I’ve ridden the Empire Builder so I’m definitely jealous right now! Haha

    I am considering doing this thanks for sharing would you recommend people to ride coach?

  • @anayaontheroad2129

    @anayaontheroad2129

    3 ай бұрын

    Awesome! I hope the video helps… as for riding in coach it is fine, but for a long ride like the zephyr it has its challenges. Sleeping in a chair for two nights and not really having any personal space for that long can be a little tough for some folks… but the coach seats get the same views as the rooms so in that sense it’s just as great!

    The Pioneer and the Desert Wind would be such popular routes nowadays, it's a real shame that they don't still run.

    Right? Being in LA it would be nice to have a route to Denver, and I get the sense the Pacific Northwest would like that too. I know the LA to Las Vegas train has been teased for 25 years, though the brightline project seems to be for real, and I read an article a few years ago about trying to revive the Pioneer, so who knows? 🤞

    Thanks for the informative video! I am considering taking it from Denver to Salt Lake City. Sonce it will arrive SLC at midnight, in your trip, what time did the train arrive SLC, and did you see many people talking off there?

    Glad you enjoyed it!… on one trip we were on time and arrived around midnight. Once we were very late and arrived around 3 am. It was hard to get a sense of how many people got off the train. There weren’t any from my car.

    Great video man, question for you I'm going in January is there a side that is better I have read that if your leaving chicago you want to have a roomette on the left?..thanks

  • @anayaontheroad2129

    @anayaontheroad2129

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. As far as the better side, it’s almost a toss up, but slight edge probably goes to the left. In corn country it doesn’t matter much, after Denver the scenery is kinda split until the first stretch of the Colorado River seems to be mostly left side up til Glenwood Canyon which is mostly right side. Getting closer to utah and ruby canyon most is on the left. Nevada it doesn’t really matter and crossing Sierra Nevada I might give the edge to right side. But overall either side you’ll get great views. But when in doubt there’s always the lounge car where you can kinda see both!

    What was your favorite meal on this train? How many hours of uninterrupted sleep did you get on this train? Also you slept on the bottom bunk I assume, is that correct?

  • @anayaontheroad2129

    @anayaontheroad2129

    Personally, for breakfast I like the omelet, for lunch the burger is pretty solid, and for dinner I like the steak. I went out of my way to try as many as I could for the video though… As for my sleep i am sort of a night owl so I would stay up until around midnight only to wake up around 630 or 7 for breakfast. But I could have easily gone to bed earlier to get a full night’s sleep… and yes, I did sleep in the bottom bunk, mostly because one of my favorite things is waking up and looking out the window to see where we are. I briefly thought about sleeping in the top bunk to keep the bottom as seating, but not having the window stopped me.
