I'm going to add a THIRD reminder that this is a reference to the 1960 film "Little Shop of Horrors" directed by Roger Corman. Although it is more popularly known for its 1982 musical remake by Frank Oz. In both versions, the main villain Orin Scrivello is a dentist. Just so we are absolutely clear.

Exactly what I thought when he said evil dudes are Dr Whatever,,, dentist's titles are 'Dr'. When I was a young child my parents insisted on taking me to a dentist named Dr Blood !!!! Needless to say I'm now traumatised & become paralyzed by fear whenever I hear anything that sounds vaguely similar to a dentist's drill !

So by this logic, Captain Mal Reynolds is both heroic and nefarious... seems quite accurate actually.

DekCheMc Yup, but considering how smart he is, I guess he gets a pass. Also, I noticed how a lot of characters in Marvel that are geniuses happen to have alliteration in their names. Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker (his intelligence is underrated for some reason, but his IQ is 250 or higher) Doctor Doom, Stephen Strange etc.

I think Darth Nox from TOR is more blatant if you know Roman mythology. Nox was the goddess of the night and the patron goddess of prostitutes and "women of the night" in Roman society. Dr strange was kind of a dick for half the movie they made and his doctor title was like a symbol of his growth. He lead away from his harsh critique of what he didn’t agree with and became more open minded, his character began as a diligent skeptic. And for that his name is representative of his roots and how he’s ironically not like that anymore. It still represents the shittiest parts of his character.

Quite early on and often repeated since the reboot - It is a Title he chose himself and not based on any form of education... In the same way The MASTER is not actually a Master of Anything... Its a Title he chose for himself... (Or now, Herself...)... Aha! Yup! I knew it was discussed in the Reboot.... David Tennat Era!!! The "Prime Minister Saxon" story... Saxon (The Master) asks Tennat to call him by his name... Its at this point they both reveal that they were names they CHOSE for themselves - They are not their actual Titles in anyway but Names they have adopted.

+Warren “Phoenix” Marris Actually the Doctor has admitted to having multiple doctorates, non of which actually qualify him to be a medical doctor though. Also since you mentioned the Master and "herself" she is not called the Master anymore. Her name is the Mistress or Missy for short because she felt she couldn't keep calling herself Master after regenerating into a woman. It should also be noted that it has been said at one point that we actually got the name for healer from The Doctor, so he didn't choose name because of what it meant, it's meaning didn't come into existence until after he chose it.

Here's a villainous name for you, 'Voldemort' - 'volde' from old Scandinavian roots meaning 'violence' and 'mort' from French meaning 'death'. On the opposing side you have Harry Potter. A short form of Harold; who was considered the last just king of England by many. And Potter; someone who takes earth and forms it (through harsh fire) into something useful, beautiful or both. I tend to either name my hero after my self or use fives (the name i plan on using if a second kid with the same name as me starts going to my school (it is a small school)).

Darth Maul is not just "kind of close" to being "Mal" but a maul is also another name for a hammer, which we're already come to accept is an "evil" weapon. So in a way it's a bit of a two-fer!

I was hoping you would mention Malvolio from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night while talking about the "mal" method of naming. Not only is the villainy of Malvolio hinted at in his name, but if you take the "volio" part of his name, it's very similar to Viola, the wise and good-hearted female protagonist of the play. So, in naming Malvolio, Shakespeare basically paints him as a "mal-Viola" or anti-Viola, or anti-good

The developers, after hearing the Good Shepherd analogy, trying to cover themselves from being too cliche? +Gaius Baltar That may all be true, but very few heroic characters don't sacrifice something in their run. They made a heroic character, even if they didn't know about his Jesus-esque resurrection, they knew he would sacrifice something. Do something heroic. And I'm sure if you go down the hero list of JCs and Shepards, you'll find many among them didn't make a life sacrifice, but did make SOME sacrifice. It's in the very nature of the modern hero.

This adds a lot more context to Firefly. I'd heard that Mal was a subversion of expectations of a character in many ways, but I never understood why. I'd always been atuned to the hard ass yet paragon-esc leaders from video games. But his name is literally Mal, and a character even makes a "joke" about it. I just though they were being ironic. Turns out they were flipping off an industry.

There are some exceptions. Dr. Manhattan is a hero (even though a rather questionable one - then again, he still drives the 'technology is evil' message), while Thor uses a hammer (or a MAL-let) as a weapon (Then again, Thor is based on super-old mythology and would probably get a sword if they were to re-write him). By the way, "Captain" Jack Sparrow, anyone..?

I'm not sure who Dr. Manhattan is but I'm sure even if he is a good guy he has done some questionable stuff like Dr Bruce Banner did as Hulk. Anyway Thor was a total dick like Victor Van Doom Jr. said, until he was banished to earth where he couldn't lift his hammer until he learned not to be a dick. On Captain Jack Sparrows case he was never really the villain, but cracked is talking about captain as military captains not captains of a ship when someone is captain of a ship the rule doesn't apply this is shown with Captain Hook, the main bad guy in peter pan, and I'm sure their are more i'm not thinking of.

Derek Shepard from Grey's Anatomy sacrifices himself to save a bunch of people.

Ahm..slight bullshit in the beginning. Commander Shepard of Mass Effect is named after an astronaut. And the main character of "The Day the Earth stood still" isnt named John Carpenter...his name is Klaatu

you forgot to mention Dr. Evil for either the doctor list or the evil name list

On the bright side of the whole doctor thing, Doctor Strange both has a doctorate and uses "doctor" in his title.

Thor is a kind of exception as he's based on the Norse god so had to have a hammer. As for the doctor; comic book villains are PhDs - scientists. The doctor has that title because he 'heals' the universe, his name is supposed to make you think of a medical doctor curing the sick, not a scientist in the lab.

Well, if you're still looking for a bit of lampooning fun, you could make the argument that while not _evil_, both Thor and The Doctor have several attributes/misdeeds that blemish their otherwise noble character. Thor is the God of Thunder, but he's also a proud berserker fighter in the Norse legends, meaning he gets into a crazy unrepentant nigh unstoppable rage murder bloodlust in the heat of intense battle. Hardly the attributes of a good person. In fact, even in the MCU Thor has a knack for giving in to his pride and temper, a trait he even _lost_ his hammer over. After h's banishment, he's sorta better, but in Avengers, he's still a hothead, content to rip his kid bro out of government custody without hearing the charges and instigate fights with people in parks, and in AoU, when Tony made Ultron, Thor literally lifted Tony, the oldest, most vulnerable/mortal Avenger (outside his suit) by the neck and bitched him out for his stupidity over using the Tesseract. Also, he comes across as very proud and holier-than-thou, though that could just be because he's the spoiled crown prince to an alien kingdom nicknamed "The Realm Eternal." The ego on this guy makes sense, at least. The Doctor is responsible for the genocide of his entire race in the Time War, and pays "penance" by meddling in the affairs of human history. Through his meddling, he's brought ridiculous consequences with his abuse of time travel, and even enlists human companions despite the fact that he's ruining their time stream with his double dipping. Honestly, I don't know if he's just naive or willfully ignorant. Either way, I sincerely doubt his altruism. I mean, his TARDIS must be stolen, for crying out loud! He certainly didn't build a dimension traveling spaceship with a freaking screwdriver, and who in their right minds after the Time War would entrust him with the means to evade capture for his crimes? He's a fugitive. Repentant, perhaps, but still a fugitive. As for the Doctor title, I'm pretty sure he (11th) told Clara about some promise he made someone about never giving up or something. Like I said, paying penance for crimes, e.g. a doctor who violated his Hippocratic Oath.

Also of more note than the tiny mention at the end is the reason swords are portrayed as the weapon of good guys is because of the cross shape the hilt forms.

There's also Dr. Nemesis; I'm a bit fuzzy on his full backstory, but he was a science whiz for the X-Men for a while. There's also Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen. On a similar note? Nobility. Bad guys are usually dukes or counts. Good guys tend to be princes, if they're nobility at all. Empires are nearly always evil, while kingdoms are good.

Peter Parker (Spider Man), John Jones (Martian Manhunter), Bruce Banner (Hulk),Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Scott Summers,(Cyclops) Wally West, (Flash) Stephan Strange,(*Dr* Strange; yeah, that one's in there for YOU, Danny old pal) Richard Ryder (Nova), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) and of course, the iconic Clark Kent... Yeah, I'm just being a bit of a know it all d*ck and pointing out that *you missed a whole section* on this video of the fact that an absurd amount of heroic characters have alliterative names, too. Reinhardt goes completely against the hammers are evil rule since he is one of the most heroic characters in the game and wields a giant hammer as his weapon.

So many exceptions to these, I was sure the video would be stuff like your later point about mal or mor names

I don't recall him doing anything that could plainly be evil. He only stole from people who could afford to be stolen from, and looked out for his crew even when it was hard to.

..Completely ignoring good guys who are doctors, like Doc Savage, Doctor Who, Doctor Strange, Doc Samson, etc... Also I can't help but notice they didn't catch on to the fact that a maul is a type of hammer. Get a thesaurus, Cracked.

Darth Maul's name was, unlike anything else in _The Phantom Menace,_ not an accident or a less than stellar writing decision. The Dathomiri Nightbrothers all had gruesome names.

I rarely lol at these, but "Get over it, you're dead" really did it for me!

Andrew Phillips Wasnt it Fox that pulled the plug because the ratings were low? Firefly only became a hit like five years after it was aired. Whedon has repeatedly said that he wants to continue the series but cant because of his schedule with Marvel and Fox owning the rights to Firefly

So that's why Malcolm McDowell plays villains.

Don't forget about General Shepherd in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I will never forget him hopping out of that helicopter, executing Ghost and Roach and setting their bodies alight in the campaign.

yeah, "Doctor" and "Doc" don't count, because they don't abbreviate. Dr. Who or Dr. Brown? looks evil. oh! it's Doctor Who and Doc Brown. that's better.

A maul is a style of hammer, going back to the hammers are evil rule.

Will now write a story where Dr. Mallory Scythe Carpenter is a super nice person trying to fight the authors for their stereotypes which are preventing jobs from hiring her claiming subliminal messaging.

That first one is very old...John Carter from the "Mars" books, for example. Marvel Hero "Doctor Strange", while he has a PHD, he doesn't do surgery anymore because his hands are messed up. "Maul" is actually the name of a medieval weapon (a great big hammer)

"Maul" generally refers to a large hammer used as a tool or weapon in modern times as well as medieval. I can't believe he brought up "Darth Maul" after saying hammers are evil and didn't make that connection.

NarfBLAST The main point of the video was naming of characters, but he also states that pop culture has decided that "hammers are villainous dickheads," which is a principle incompatible with Thor being a hero. Of course the idea that Thor wields a hammer is much older than the idea that hammers are evil.

In German (auf Deutsch), Vater means "father," as I learned in high school, way too many years ago. And I can't find any translation for dahr or darh from German (with the assistance of Google Translate), though darh is translated as "one and a half" in Hindi. "Faded" in German (auf Deutsch) is verblichen or verblüht, nor could I find anything even remotely close for fade, shadow, dark or shade. ~ And so, kind sir, I must beg to differ, though I would be glad to be schooled further.

That Star Trek spoiler caused so much pain. I know its an old show but I'm part of a new generation that has just discovered it on Netflix.

Shepard was named after a real guy who was involved with space, last name being Shepard. It wasn't to relate to the "holy shepherd."
