You are a GREAT bassist and also a GREAT teacher... An anecdote, in the 80's there was a movie called "Subway" and the soundtrack had been composed by Eric Serra... I remember that the guys who wanted to play the electric bass In my city (Ushuaia) they went crazy wanting to know how to play Eric Serra's slap/pop with his composition "Congabass": kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zn-CyMidntTLcdY.htmlsi=JPy7gBI1cMM0326X

Did these tabs get moved behind a paywall?
I can confirm that Flea was indeed one of my bass heroes too!!
A full breakdown of U can’t hold no groove would be amazing! There’s not a whole lot out there for learning Wooten basslines in such detail like you’re doing

Mr Pink is a classic bassline, cool that you included it.
Yes, please break down "U can't hold no groove"
I was sitting here thinking how badass I would be if videos like this were around when I was younger.

U can’t hold no groove DEMANDS a full break down
Haha! I must be doing something right! "Take The Power Back" was the first slap line I learned, from a drummer, in 1996.

It's a great bass line to learn early on!

...and I just recently learned how to properly play "Aeroplane" after playing it wrong since I was a teen. Only took about a half hour; I should have figured it out _years_ ago.
And yesssssss, we want a dedicated U can't hold no groove video 🙏
I stopped playing bass about 8 years ago after having kids. After discovering Charles, I am back into it full force. Thank you for the inspiration.
Hey Charles! This selection of bass lines is epic!! All of them were at the very least familiar to me and all of the artists you picked are just awesome! Air Plane was RIGHT at my level (got it up to speed in 5-10 Minutes (I only missed the fills at that point) and Mr. Pink was really fun, too (but challenging). For this channel I would love some tasty, fun things that I can pick up quickly and learn some new tiny thing for my own (slap) BASS playing, since there is very little resources about slapping after the absolute basics. In case you decide to focus more on one song like Mr. Pink, I'd absolutely stick around for it!!! However I feel like it would need a somewhat reliable difficulty rating, so I can see, if it's way above my skill level and how long learning it might take me. Sorry for the long message and all the love to you and your girl
Charles awesome video I've been playing for 30 yrs I'm self taught. you just perked my interest keep up the awesome playing and videos. Thanks
Hi Charles! Im a die hard fan of you! Thanks so much for this great video! I got your slap bass universety sweather and i got a subscription on your patreon page. I just loved this video! I learned the very first part of u cant hold no groove from your patreon page, but i think it was very hard, so YES pleas make a video and berak it all down for us! Thanks so much for the work you are doing for us beginners!
I really appreciate that in this video the playing is slowed way down compared to some of the previous videos :)
I love your videos!!
Very good lesson ❤
the content on this video will keep me occupied for a month! ty!
you are the number 1 ever !!!
Excellent!
@basscamp i think something that’s heavily overlooked is instrument setup. For years I thought I couldn’t slap right, until I finally got a higher quality bass that came with a good set up. String gauge, string height, neck level, fretwork, bridge setup, soooo important! Can you talk about this in a video, tips and tricks, and your preferences?
Great Stuff 👍
Honestly as a beginner bassist, just the intro to Victor Wooten’s “The Lesson” has many great little intricacies that I would love to hear a deeper dive on, I think it is a great introduction to harmonics and percussive play.
Thank you very much, Sir ❤❤❤❤
Once again, thank you for these clear explanations. Do you have a recommendation regarding the height of the strings relative to the neck to make slap easier?
That is the best Slap video
Very good, thank you
this video should keep me busy until the winter
great video like always!! Hey which IEM earbuds you recommend for bassist? from cheap to more expensive ones. Thank you
take the power back has always been my warm up tune lol thats wild
When you said "You can't hold no groove" my bass suddenly appeared in my hands. I would absolutely love to see a video how to play this song.
Great lesson and you are amazing. How about doing JC Hesitation blues. The tone and note placement. The first Alembic Bass was made just for him after all. Or a Jack Bruce fretless bit. You got tons of geezer fans.
Charles, your CB4 looks sooo good, like a toffee, you wanna bite it! 😝 Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and knowledge of the art of Bass!
QUE TIMBRE LINDO TEM ESSE BAIXO MEU DEUS!! AINDA MAIS NAS MÃOS DESSE BAIXISTA SENSACIONAL ❤!!!
dont know if youll read this charles but i really would like a comprehensive breakdown on u cant hold no groove or even the lesson by victor wooten, as i am trying to do those at school for my yr 12 HSC, havnt found alot on youtube for wooten breakdowns so far
Great video and grooves! 🤩🤩🤩🤩 A full video for the Victor Wooten song would be amazing! 🖖🤩
It's interesting that Charles is so good at slapping despite having a not ideal slap technique. His pops require a lot of forearm movement, he is basically moving it away from the bass instead of just rotating his wrist. I am still trying out different pop techniques to find the best one.
pls do the video about u can't hold no groove🙏🙏greetings from Argentina
Great list of songs for slap practice! Also; shout-out to "Lacquer Head"by Primus. Definitely also a song that would fit such a list
Yes, that is something that we want
I could've sworn Take The Power Back is played with a pull-off to the open D-string...but after checking back with the recording and some live videos it does sound and look like the hammer-on from nowhere.

I made that mistake too! So happy Charles broke this one down. Such clean precise technique.
One thing that I learned doing octaves for so long, is to just hold down both strings whenever you are rocking between high and low octaves, gives you a tighter and more uniform sound and there's less separation, let's you play faster as well. It's like playing a chord, or a bar chord. Octaves are a huge part of bass, probably #1. These are all good slap bass lines, but they are lacking much articulation. I find R&B slap to help me learn more articulations, over rock styles which are more speed and power, slapping started with R&B and this is maybe why it's helping me learn it. I never seen anyone like you who skipped this part of the process, with focusing on modern slap lines. Unless you count myself, before I knew what I wanted to focus on R&B for that.
Please break down 'if you ain't got no groove'!
The MusicMan on the wall is a Sterling 4 right?
I love a good homework assignment.🎉
Hey slap dad..! how does your slap sound so perfect, is it because your bass is new or your bass set up? what would be the best slap bass set up, my slap does suck. please give a slap medicine in your next video or short you tube video. Thankyou.
.......yes. That's something I want!
My muted notes sound nothing like like yours 😅 gotta practice that
For me it’s the up strum and popping on stuff like the Victor Wooten one that make it super awkward, very impressive feat to have complete control over those movements
I'm gonna miss the bass. At the school I'm going to I won't be able to play bass, so I won't pick it up again until after graduation, and during summer I guess. I hope to God my thumb doesn't go soft on me
With a lot of these we’ll all agree that they could make a great anthems we slip gently towards extinction. We can play a thunderous au revoir with magnificent twitching thumb and much voooom of electric amplifiers as the waves crash and all us primates wish we’d “done more”… ohdear
Always great stuff from Charles! If anyone's interested in a really good left-hand slap practice song, check out Lacquer Head by Primus. It's a song comprised almost entirely of ghost notes. Many of which are on the left hand.
If you wanted to break down U Can't Hold No Groove, I'd be fine with that, though I'll be content with this for a while.
Charles, If you happen to see this and you think it is worthy, can you take a listen to Joe Satriani's Bells of Lal part 2. Stu Hamm did the line and I've gotten pretty good at it but am always second guessing myself on how to play the line. I saw a short video showing a small section of them in the studio recording it and it confused me even more. Its a great line and there are no videos I can find online that shows tips on playing it. Maybe I'll get lucky and you'll take a look. No shade if you don't. I know you got things to do! Ha!
I would pay for a breakdown of all of Victors great slap etudes!!!
👍👍👌
Apparently I've played Take the Power Back incorrectly my whole life
G five please
The slap channel.
What no "Shake Hands With Beef"????
Really appreciate the lick breakdowns! Billy Ocean's Caribbean Queen as the hardest song next time?
plz u can’t hold no groove . that percussive pattern gives me so much trouble
Charles, I played Take the Power back with a pull off to let ring the open D string for yearrrssssss. This hammer on the A string is much easier 🫠 Thanks

Nice, yeah I think that it gives you more control and POWER 🔥
You keep acting like we didn't notice that you and Charles are brothers 🤦 Dumb jokes (that you've probably already heard a million times) aside, I've been looking for a tutorial like this for so long, thank you!!
