They actually talked about putting the 4.5L in an F150 production model. The break up of Ford and Navistar killed the deal.

Rumor had it that this engine was going to be offered in the F150 trucks back when these first came out. But as usual the EPA screwed us (as usual) and it never ended up on the trucks at all.

In the gas world reducing back pressure will kill low end torque, but will pick up in mid range RPMs. As a kid I personally killed many a small block chevy, the key to making power is to have the intake, carb, cam, heads and headers all tuned to the desired RPM you want to run. I well tuned mild motor will out run far more expensive motors. I saw it and lived it. I was a serious drag strip rat and loved the run what you brung Friday night test and tune.

Thanks. I've never seen or heard of this engine. It makes sense that they would use a smaller one. It seems like most of the little cab over trucks that I see around here are gas engines or Duramax. Good info.

I agree, the 6.4 is a can of worms. Every one that comes into the shop, I cringe because we fix one thing and then another goes bad. We have had good success repairing them, but I hold my breath every time. Very complicated and expensive.

It uses Navistar Service Maxx software with special 9 pin deutsch adapter using the Movimento NAV-Link which connects to USB. The cover also Cracks from trying to use bolts to force cover down to block. These are great to work on. Great money makers. Service Maxx has to be the crappiest software for diagnosing International trucks and Ford Medium Duties with Navistar engines. You're correct about International dealers. They are a bunch of A#$holes.

Just worked on one of these LCFs that had a no crank no start. Ended up being a simple starter, A landscape company owns the truck and has a couple of them. They haul their mowers in them. Didn't know there was a 4.5 powerstroke. The starter looked the same as a 6.0. The local Ford dealer had a starter in stock.

Thanks for the videos. We have a 05 Lcf 4.5 vt275. Has been diagnosed with hpop failure. Truck was shutting down while driving and starting right back up, then it was shutting down and not starting till it cooled down, then it just wouldn't start. Approx 110,000 miles . My question is while the mechanic and I have it apart what else should we do, can we egr delete it ( weld the cooler ends as per your other video, but is there 4.5L tuning available?) Should we pull and clean oil cooler and check it out? Inspect housing around hpop check for cracks. Anything else? Thanks for your help

You are seeing the same problem I have with parts. At work we have a International truck with the T444E 7.3Liter. Extremely similar to the PowerStroke 7.3 but many differences also. Here's the really screwed up deal. We have a Ford F750 with the Navistar version of the 6.0, The VT365. It looks like a FORD outside. A International/Navistar under the hood and depending on WHICH part you need, you may go to FORD, or you may go to INTERNATIONAL. This is a "Blue Diamond" joint venture NIGHTMARE!!!

Go to the ford dealer. Almost Every Engine part that a 4.5 and 6.0 shares with navistar engines has an international reference part number. Especially if it is a Blue Diamond part. Try to get a VIN from an International truck online and use it. Its worked for me. The main advantage of going to an international dealer is that prices for some parts are cheaper than from a ford dealer but NAVI won't want to help unless you have VIN or part number. Don't mention its for a FORD truck.

It wasn't really the break down with Navistar that killed the Ford half ton diesel. As you can see, they already had a 4.5L up and running, and Ford is also capable of building a diesel themselves. The fact is, Ford Dodge and Chevy were all going to put small diesels in their half tons, and they all put them on hold right around the same time. The fear was that the half ton diesels would erode the sales of more profitable 3/4 ton diesels. Ford decided to go with the Eco-Boost engines instead.

We had the International version of this Ford as our parts delivery truck. That truck cost our branch tens of thousands of dollars between, down time, repairs and missed sales - if ya can’t deliver the goods the customer can only wait so long. Needless to say several months after we replaced the complete air conditioning system, the turbo, the transmission and brakes, the engine had an oil pan failure. Good riddance International CF and VT275

There is no such thing as good back pressure in a 4 stroke engine, the benefit from smaller exhaust pipes at lower rpms is due to a scavenging effect that allows more fresh air to enter the cylinders during valve overlap causing better low end torque at the sacrifice of top end power. An exhaust with a 2in pipe and no muffler is going to make more power everywhere than the same diameter pipe with a muffler. But if you increase pipe diameter you can lose some low end torque. Beneficial Back pr

Really wish Ford would drop the 6 cylinder Powerstroke in something like the F150. But instead they force you with a 3/4 ton and up in order to get a diesel. I see why people take a gas engine out an drop in the Cummins 4BT engine. But why spend nearly $12,000 for that when the engine produces very little torque and red lines at 2500 RPM. If Ford is watching this let me just say this...F150s will sell more if you drop in a diesel engine in it.
