Not sure what you mean by evolving. If you mean to say a pro modeler like Naoki or N.Maker, he's definitely not. Its mostly the software and hardware who did the work in this vid. He barely developed the basic skills considering the number of kits he built which are mostly rushed. If he has any notable attribute we can see on his vids, its definitely not skill

Hey Mecha Gaikotsu! I'm an industrial design student and in some of my classes where we use 3D printing for our projects, typically to get the nice finish you're looking for, we just sand it from 80 grit to 150, then 220 to 320. Once it's all smooth, we use a filler primer as the base coat to smooth the surface even more as well as prep it for paint. I know that's kind of a long process but I hope it helps! Keep up the great work! :)

Those mecha masks came out pretty dang nice. Aside from recommending using a body filler like Bondo to really fill layers and maybe slicing the mask models apart to give you the best chance to get those super sharp lines, I'd drop by the Punished Props channel here on YT. They have some great How-To stuff and do a fair bit of 3D printing. The 3D Printing Nerd's channel might be worth a shot, too. With all the machines he's used, he might have a few tricks to manage the layers better and ease the post-printing clean up.

follow some guides on how to make 3D printed helmets (star wars, etc). they pretty much use a combo of filler primer (really thick sprayable primer used to fill in the layer lines) and bondo glazing putty (goop that spreads on for bigger seams/blemishes) and it's all sandable once dried so you can get that perfect smooth finish. the basis is pretty much fill then sand instead of just trying to sand the 3D printed plastic by itself.

I would recommend getting sandpaper from 80 - 320 to help finish a 3d print. First sand the print down to 220 or 180 then spray it a couple times with a filler primer, and sand again. if there are still some problem areas you might have to do some bondo filling or sculpting. Bondo sculpting is just using bondo to like clay to sculpt. A couple other things to know are once dialed in printers most printers can print up 70 degree before needing support material, using different types of infills can make prints fast but weaker, or slow and stronger, increasing the infill isn't always the best way to make a stronger print, and increasing layers of plastic the walls are made of helps add strength

Tips to smooth/ post-processing 3d prints are - -Using wood filler is a good way to fill gaps for small holes because you can use sandpaper after it dry to smooth/blend it with the print -100 grit and keeping going up in grits till you get the desired smoothness -Wet sanding is highly recommended when you are sanding any 3d printing filament and a sanding sponge could be good if you want to spend the extra on it - using a primer and filler spray or a spray-on rubber is a good final touch to get rid of any remaining layer lines

  • @hoshiadam

Automotive Filler Primer is a good thing to hit prints with for filling small gaps and lines. 3M Acryl-Green Spot Putty is what I use for filling bigger gaps (before priming).

For cleaning and fixing 3D printed stuff, it's good to have different grids of sandpaper and putty. The putty is important because sometimes sanding alone won't give you a smooth surface.

To clean up 3D prints that have no too much tiny details I recommend using Selley’s automotive filler primer Doug like 3-5 thick coats sanding down in between, it’s get super noice finishes, either that or just sand it, I do It mainly on nylon prints as nylon is a paint to sand after sandblasting

Well, to achieve a perfect surface I would recommend the following suggestions: 1. Maybe try switching to a softer filament, easier to sand such as PET, PETG, PLA or ABS 2. Try dividing the object in a 3D software and print them separately. You'll have more freedom to sand down some areas you couldn't do. Then glue them back together. 3. Try useing Tamya filler or some other brand, you can get them in any hardware store and bye bye to those ugly layers left from the printer. 4. There are also "acetone gas bath" you can do to achive almost a molded injected plastic surface but it can be dangerous or destroy your print so proceed with caution. 5. Good ol' elbow grease and time! Cheers :)

We deal with 3D prints all day at work with super suits. I recommend using a catalyzed primer like “polyprime “ there’s polyester versions and urethane versions. Depends on your preference but either would be fine. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Don’t forget to clean your gun really well!!!!!!!! This should fill in most grow lines. Go in with you first pass of sanding. Any discrepancies from there I would use red spot putty or green acryl putty. Spread it on with a razor blade to keep it thin. Use 2in1 primer in between as guide coats and to fill small imperfections. Then it’s just taking the grit higher and higher. If it’s good enough for DC and Marvel it’s good enough for a gundam mask 😉

Best way to make the layer lines less noticeable is to make them smaller. That would also increase your print time, but that's just something we deal with. For large, flat areas you can use a card scraper to knock em down quick, and a quick sanding afterward and it'll look very good. Filler primers also help, but can obscure fine details.

So one thing you may want to look into is XTC 3D for filling in your extrusion style 3D prints. It is designed to not only smooth out 3D printed works, but it also strengthens the builds and makes it even easier to paint. It just brushes on so you can control where it goes. Absolute life saver, and very inexpensive. Hope this helps out.

Motip Finishing Putty is a great filler to use for 3D printing. My friend who sells 3D prints for a living recommended it to me and it works very well. It dries quite fast and can be easily sanded down smooth. However with complicated models it's still always good to print certain parts separately so you don't have super difficult access to certain half covered or awkwardly positioned parts.

That a heck of a good print for a first attempt. It looks pretty good to me but if you want to fill in gaps I'd use like a spray automotive primer or a tube of wood filler for the bigger gaps (cause it's way easier than mixing up bondo and it sands down nicely)

One way to get a smooth finish with filament prints is to "vapor smooth" them. There a few videos about it on yt, but it involves keeping the part in a container with a soaked peice of paper/sponge with acetone and/or isopropyl. The vapors will slowly melt and fuse the outer surfaces of the part

A good way to finish the FDM prints is actually using wood filler or a filler primer to take care of the gaps made by the layer lines, then just sanding it smooth with 320 or 400 grit before base coat.

Not sure if you got all the tips you needed but use some wood filler, sand, repeat, and the layer lines can be minimized greatly. Also use it for resin prints to close drain holes or to fix any crack / hole really. Also tree supports are the shiz for getting supports off super easily :D. Great vid as always surprised YT kept this one from me for so long lol

I would recommend getting filler primer/putty primer, its used to fill scratches on cars Its what alot of people use to get a smoother print just takes a bit of going back and forth of priming and sanding to get ther but it's def worth it
