    This was by far the most useful lathe print I’ve seen on KZread! Awesome content and your thought process is refreshing.

    Found your channel today sir, and I love it! Really like the design for this and might give it a shot. I'm in college for machining at the moment and this would be a neat thing to pull out of the toolbox and fascinate or annoy my classmates with. If it happens to be another snow day for us tomorrow, I'll try the print! Looking forward to watching more!

    Nice job, I think I would remove that relief on the front side and if needed increase it on the backside to alleviate the deflection on the front.

    Just found your channel yesterday & enjoying the back catalogue. I 3d printed a bunch of quick change tool holder mounts instead of having them loose in a draw and chipping the inserts.

    Love the idea and hope you're enjoying some of the older vids. I have mine all lined up nice in a drawer now on a rubber mat, but I've toyed with making some modular pieces that lock together that have dovetails on each for the toolholders to drop on to

    Nice job! I'm guessing you won't be taking the gauge in and out of that part a lot but if you do, you might want to consider using a heated brass insert for the threads so you don't strip the part out over time. Q&a question: What do you do for your day job? You seem experienced with CAD and machining. Is it along those same lines of work?

    Not only that, the insert should be placed on the opposite side so that the pressure isn't on the little bit that is holding the insert in, but on the whole face of the insert.

  • @FunctionalPrintFriday

    @FunctionalPrintFriday

    Thanks for mentioning that. I have some, and thought about it, but the threads came out so clean, and I didn't have to put much torque on it to get it to lock completely. If it loosens up over time and I have to torque it to the point where the PLA is yielding or creeping, I'll re-design for an insert.

    I like the effort but the problem here is that you'd usually want to check your dial/measurements without touching your original tool, and since the whole thing flexes, a motion of the arm would throw the indicator out of whack. By the way, how in the world do you not have more subscribers? This is a solid presentation, and I can't believe how many videos you have!

  • @FunctionalPrintFriday

    Not sure I follow on the "original tool" point, since the idea of the QCTP is to always have the tool return to the exact same point when removed/reinstalled. It's valid though that when the indicator is installed, the value won't be consistent when swapped or if the tension is changed. The value read is only good relative to the other readings at that moment you have it on and are rotating the workpiece.

  • @larrybud

    @@FunctionalPrintFriday But if you change it to the dial indicator, you'd have to change the cross-slide position and keep moving it back and forth. I guess it depends what the goal is of the indicator. If it's just to indicate in a 4-jaw you'd be good. Otherwise I think an alternative method of holding the indicator would be in order, something which doesn't attach to the tool post or get in the way of any cutting tools.

    @@larrybud I see what you mean now. Yes, this is strictly for indicating in stock in the 4-jaw, or for checking concentricity for a 2nd opp in collet or 3-jaw. Not used during turning.

    I have watched a lot of these functional print videos of yours over the last few days and I must say I like the videoformat, your mindset and the designprocess and the designes you come up with. This was another great one. But since I like what you do with cad and 3d printer I would also like to see what you do for machining which is another interest of mine, do you have a seperate channel designated for machining or don't you do machining videos??

    Very nice work and your attention to the details is outstanding. I am fairly new to your channel so this might not be a very good question, but have you experimented with determining which filament is best for tooling parts such as this. I do understand and agree that PLA is actually quite strong, but for something like this is there a better choice or is that just not necessary. I don't have enough experience yet with TDPing and would appreciate hearing what you have to say. Thank you for the video.

  • @FunctionalPrintFriday

    thx, PLA is one of the more rigid filaments. Carbon PLA would be even better, but would be slightly abrasive to the toolpost over time.

    13:09 could you do solid infill near the wedge if not, could you do some internal solid layers to reduce flexing? Part like this I print 100% infill. But some would argue that pointless. Stefan at cnc printing may have done some testing 8! This.

    Great video bro! Great! One question. I am having some difficulties designing a compression mold for holster making. There is any shortcut to offset all faces at the same time of the female part for clearance .80 inch of the kydex with? More if you use letter on the mold. Thanks

    Without the corner holes in the dovetail, would be stronger, less flex.

  • @FunctionalPrintFriday

    I agree, but then you have a stress riser there, which will ultimately fail under tension. The tool post exerts over a ton of force on the dovetails.

    Thank you for your reply. Yes, if I still have time before Friday's release, I do have another question. In the Bambu slicer under the prepare tab there is system presets dialog box which allows for different layer heights as you well know. Do you have any guidance on these choices relative the strengths for you engineering type prints? And along the same lines what do you recommend for the infill options, or don't' these options have much effect on strength. Also, your outside textured appearances are outstanding. Is there settings which produce these results. My prints are not nearly as good looking as your prints are. Possibly I am missing something. Thank you so much for your help.

  • @glennfelpel9785
    @glennfelpel97858 ай бұрын

    Question No. 2 if I may. The how does the PLA you recommended work out in your AMS? Are you choosing black just because of the lower cost or is there other considerations. And also, along the same lines do you change any of the printer settings for this filament from what Bambu Lab has built in for PLA?? Your recommendations would be appreciated.

  • @glennfelpel9785
    @glennfelpel97858 ай бұрын

    Still another question. Could you elaborate just a bit on how you print the white lettering on the bottom layer. Do you model the lettering with the part or do you put the lettering on in the Bambu Studio slicer? And what type of a build plate are you using to get that very nice texture on the bottom side. Your guidance is much appreciated.
