3D printed minié? Whatever next? Smokeless powder?
A little test of a product I found in France from an online store. How do they perform? What is the point anyway?

    In regards to digging out bits of a stuck plastic bullet discussed early on in the vid: PLA really softens up in Ethyl Acetate (often sold as MEK/Methyl Ethyl Ketone Substitute). If you want to full dissolve it, Chloroform works fairly well, and Dicloromethane is king (but also highly dangerous, anything here should be used in a well ventilated area anyways). If I were you I'd see if ABS is an option, harder to print, but better impact resistance and that than PLA and it easily dissolves in acetone. I personally would also like to see PETG rounds attempted since it has much better impact resistance than PLA and I think feels better to handle. It'll dissolve with toluene (found in most paint thinners).

    I am sort of surprised the PLA survived that. (and yes i would have used red or another bright colour that will not be common in the area you are going to look for it) PLA is not among the higher melting temps of filaments, neither is it among the more impact resistant filaments to my knowledge. What i mean is that for printing with PLA the nozzle temp you use in a 3D printer is between 180 and 220 °C. (i used 205°C the last time i printed PLA iirc) The PCTG i use for most things i print, has a nozzle temp of around 260°C and ABS is even higher and supposdly has the highest impact resistance. Sure the projectiles are only exposed to the high temperature for a short amount of time, but still, a way higher temperature, and the barrel also might get warm enough to deform the material i thought.

  • @Tesserae

    @Tesserae

    I agree that they should have been made with ABS rather than PLA for durability. I wish the closeups of the projectiles had better exposure.

    Plastic doesnt absorb heat as fast as metals, so when exposed to a blast from powder they usually dont melt at all. The only thing i would be careful of is putting PLA into an already hot barrel. PLA can begin melting at about 50 celsius, i would recommend PETG at a minimum but preferrably ABS, ASA, HIPS or Nylon. These common plastics have anywhere between 50-120% higher glass transition temperature.

    Cool, I actually printed a couple of bullets a while back for a 308 but never got around to trying them. I figured a primer only and a blanket as a back stop could work. And eye protection, plastic is bouncy.

    A lot of folks use 3d printing to create the positive for making silicone molds. I bet you could do the same and cast some epoxy or similar Minie Balls that'd be more structurally sound than PLA. Or use castable elastic and make Ye Olde Rubber Bullets! Making a higher temperature mold by the same means with plaster of paris could be a cheap way to prototype cast lead bullet designs without cutting a cherry and drilling mold blocks on a lathe. Edit: Looks like Alumilite Mold Putty is heat-resistant enough to cast lead in (people use it for fishing weights). I think I found a new way to prototype black powder bullets.

    These have so low that accuracy will always be an issue. This is further compounded by the hollow construction. Simply printing them as solid slugs would probably have worked better. If they could be made accurate out to 10 or 15 meters I could see the value as a low cost practice round. Less powder used, less fouling that needs cleaning and reusability all speak to the frugal owner who just want to practice proficiency.

    another factor of use could well be in spaces that you want to limit lead exposure, particularly if you were doing blackpowder with kids. That said, if I had the space and funds, I'd love to use that design to make a "paintball" for use in reenactment and similar styles of shooting, since you could figure out some velocities and ranges for massed fire. Could be interesting!

    I'm wary of plastic in BP guns. I once loaded some 12b cartridges with BP and used plaswads. The rounds fired OK but when I looked down the barrels, they looked filthy and choked. I pushed a well patched cleaning rod through and a 28 inch long crinkly black plastic barrel liner flopped out the front. They came out cleanly and just needed an oily wipe to get the inside shiny again. I assume hot burning powder and low melting point plastic don't mix.
