3D Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Trailer - VFX Breakdown
Фильм және анимация
A breakdown of the 16 VFX shots I made for the final trailer. You can watch the original Trailer here: • Doctor Who: Fan 50th A...
This represents about 3 months of sporadic compositing work in my spare time and around 55 hours of rendering. To achieve the full stereoscopic 3D, each shot had to be rendered twice (a left and right eye) at slightly offset angles.
Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, and Autodesk Maya were the programs used.
You can check out another trailer I did in 2010 here: • Doctor Who Christmas S...

BBC should hire you. You can do the work of an entire team.

Incredible! If one man can do this, imagine what the BBC could do with classic Doctors?
Incredible John Smith! The BBC should have gotten you to do that bit at the end of the 50th where all the Doctors save Gallifrey. Just an idea for your next Doctor Who project, maybe you could redo that scene? I'd love to see the first doctor actually look right into the camera and say "Calling the War Council of Gallfey, this is the Doctor!"

Didn't notice that part ahaha (If you're actually meaning that seriously), but what I was referring to was the fact that the doors open outwards at the end of the intro... But the doors are meant to open inwards...

Really? ._., I've only ever seen them open inwards in the show.... ._.
This is insane! You did nearly all of Thai with just still images too! Imagine if you had the actual actors, acting for you!! The things you could do!
As someone learning VFX myself, I sat through this whole thing thinking "Holy crap that's genius", and "They make it look so simple"
Not only did he make an INCREDIBLE trailer shot for shot... But he did it TWICE for the 3D effect! Kudos to you, sir! I wish I could award you more than digital praise!
You're my new hero.
Wow, I'm still geeking out about all the video manipulations... made doubly hard because they're all in 3D... All things considered though I'd say this was an accurate preview of TDOTD, at least the story of it.
When I meet you (if I ever do), I'm personaly gonna give you a cat. Because you definitely deserve one ;)
This breakdown is equally impressive as the actual final product
I'm very inspired by your work. It's not just what you can do, but what you think to do that makes your stuff amazing.
very impressive work
You should totally do some tutorials about how to make them.
This is so amazing. The trailer you made is absolutely incredible, and being able to see the breakdown of how you did it was amazing! You are super incredible and I am so jealous of you talents. Like oh my god!
Loved this. You are amazing! Really thought THIS was an actual trailer for the longest time. Well done! Tip of the hat my friend!!
You are, an absolute genius. This is so brilliant, congratulations. Best thing I've seen, wow!
It actually looks better than the real trailer. now THAT'S a talent
ahh so cool to see how you put it all together. Thanks so much for putting so much time and hard work into this! It's really fabulous.
Brilliant work! Seriously impressive how you blended photos, previous episodes, and full CGI together.
This is beyond amazing. I just... I can't... one person? ONE PERSON... this? THIS?! Gah!!!
You can't just do this. You can't just be this good okay? It's so unfair.
Seriously, incredible work. Some of the special effects you created are better than some of the things on tv at the moment!
Incredible work. I am so very impressed by your skill with compositing. There's...there's not enough words, sir. Kudos!
VFX is even more fun than the actual video :) great jo!!
You could fake anything you wanted :O
wow, thanks for posting, looks like every minute of 3 months and 55 hours work!! Impressed :)
You blew my mind friend, those shots were brilliant
Makes me miss the 50th. What a fantastic episode.

You are brilliant! the amount of time it must've taken to edit all this to make such an amazing trailer, i can tell you've thought about this long and hard! well done
Love watching these because you give me ideas and show me what I could achieve if I put my time into it
Ok....Now I'm impressed :0
Best 5 minutes of my life
Brilliant work- I am incredibly impressed. Can't imagine all the time and hard work you put into this.
I have to tell you, THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!! I hope we get to see more videos like the trailer in the future!!!
3:37 Series 8 trailers in a nutshell
ACTUALLY I CAN'T BELIEVE IN WHAT I'M SEEING
God skill level: God. I loved the burning Tardis at the end. That was incredible how you did that. Any bets this entire trailer is going to be better than the actual one coming out.
Man, you're fantastic at this. If you aren't already a professional at VFX, it's time to rethink your career path, because this is amazing :D
WHY ARE YOU NOT WORKING ON DOCTOR WHO! This is amazing
The picture and Billie Piper part was just way too cool :O
The amount of effort gone into this is incredible!!!!
I just can't believe this! This is so amazing and so realistic ! You sir, deserve a medal !
absolutely amazing work...you deserve and oscar or something
просто титанический труд! спасибо тебе, автор!
That was so freaking amazing. You had me convinced for sure. Bravo!
This is even more beautiful than the trailer itself... fascinating. I hope there will be a Wholock breakdown too. Amazing.
Can you do a tutorial of 3D editing? Your really good!
meanwhile I cant even Chroma key on adobe after effects
Oh my God. I just can't wait for the new episode! It looks so freaking amazing!
Thank you for showing everyone how it was done. An incredible piece of work.

You are Fantastic! Absolutely Fantastic!
Honest to god this is one of the most beautiful gifts a fan has ever done for the fandom and the crew of Doctor Who. You are incredible. I mean -- WOW.
When I doubt that I love making vfx and how it works, I just watch this video, and my enthusiasm is incontainable! Thank you so much for making this, so I can make myself happy when I'm sad XD
Allright, i wan't to know what the first soundtrack in this video and the important question not ment to be in this Video, WHAT ABOUT SHERLOCK? DID HE MAKE IT TO DRINK HIS TEE?

Thank you so much for sharing the breakdown video with us. This is fascinating, just as much as the video itself.
1:30 how did you do that 3D rotation?
@ThePenquinX
7 жыл бұрын
At first, I thought it was a 3D modeling, but upon closer look & rewatching several times, I believe that was just the footage already dipicting the Tardis moving (after it rotates fully, notice a strip of White on the edge. Rotating a 3D model wouldn't leave that White strip). I think the play & rewind gave the illusion of 3D rotation. However, without pre-rotating footage, you could create such a thing with making a 3D model; for a Tardis, taking four images of each side & 3D aligning them in boxed formation would be effective at such a distance.

So much work had gone into such a short video, Bravo :)
OHMYGOD FANTASTIC YOU DESERVE AN AWARD FOR THIS
This is an amazing work of effects, I personally would have liked this one better than the actual 50th anniversary. This needs WAY more views.
Absolutely brilliant. Just the creativity astounds me. This is what VFX should be. This is the type of work that neds to be done in the industry, but instead we get utter nonsense for a better budget and larger team than one artist in their spare time. I tip my hat to you, sir.
I watched the whole thing (in awe, mind you) and still have no idea how you did it. I love you.
They are just animated images!! GAH! Why are you so skilled!! Amazing work!
I don't even know what to say to this. You're good, man. You're absulutely amazing at what you do.
this is amazing, apart from that i'm speechless, or in this case typeless ;) well done BRAVO! :D that was pure gold!
This is utterly amazing. You have true talent my friend.
Beyond brilliant, truly spectacular work here
Spent the whole video in awe, no one person should have this much talent.
That is just...amazing, no more can be said to justify what an amazing piece of work this is.
My jaw dropped 20 seconds into the video and stayed down for the rest of it. This was absolutely AMAZING!!!
The fact that you achieved these results in three months is alone amazing. The fact that you did it in 3D? Even better.
You are good at what you do, plain and simple. This was *fantastic*
you make it look so easy!! truly amazing work!
brilliant work! I loved the trailer and love it even more now seeing the making of! well done AWESOME!
This is amazing. Honest to God when I saw the trailer I was so surprised it wasn't real since it looked so authentic. I was wondering how you did it. This is just brilliant.
holy hell...I thought this was the genuine trailer! Nicely done, mate!
I applaud you! This is so extremely impressive! Seriously, just wow...
This is absolutely incredible. Bravo, Sir!
THAT was amazing. A big thank you for sharing. Brilliant! Now I'm going to be very, very cheeky... could you possibly give us 20 secs (or more) of all the Doctors in either one setting, or "regenerating' into one another - but not in stereoscopic 3D? Hell! With your talent, I'm looking forward to whatever you produce next! Jaw still on floor! Thanks again!
Insanely well done!
I am stunned at the amount of photoshopping, to make sure that each shot was not a simple "copy" from a part of the series. but more like a completely unique shot. On top of the 'shopping the 2D to 3D conversion of the images, a massive undertaking in an of itself. The extra step of facial animation, a very hard task, then to make it all feel complete the effects, not just fire and smoke, but blowing hair, the reflection on the suit of armour, the blowing grass... and to top it all off you've
Wow, this is absolutely amazing. Well done.
Speechless! Brilliant! Looking at that video now and the actual one it makes sense! You must either be a very clever human being (or Time Lord) or someone who does stuff like this for a job! Amazing! Keep teasing us John Smith!
This editing is amazing!
Dude this is so pretty and meticulous and very good job!
You have skill. Real, genuine talent. I would love to see more of this!
That's... that's amazing. There is no other word for it. The final thing seriously looks real!
You had me completely convinced it was the actual trailer! Good job!
Dude or dudette, YOU DESERVE THE FREAKING INTERNET! This is AWESOME!!!
I figured it was a fan made trailer but it was just so epic I kinda wanted it to be the real one. well done, you did a really great job! =D
I KNEW I HAD SEEN THOSE SCENES OF DAVID BEFORE!!!!! I KNEW IT!!!! Awesome job dude! amazeballs! xx
You deserve every FX job out there!
this is absolutely amaizing!!! you´re so talented!!!
I'm blown away by how you were able to produce such a thing. I don't even really care that it's fake, that's how well made it was :P
holy shit! this sets the bar soooo high for the actual trailer well done! make more please!
There are no words to describe the talent. I can't imagine the time it took to do all this. INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE!
