I was watching a different channel last night that was making gems with old DVD and hot glue. She explained that DVD are 2 layers, so you can seperate the layers and still get the mirrored part on one side. Then she said CD's are usually 1 thicker layer and much harder to cut with regular scissors and getting the coating off is difficult. She's the only person I've seen explain it like that. But it makes sense seeing how hard it is to get the film off your cd.

I know this is an old video Ii have a easy trick to take the covering off a CD. Use packing tape or duct tape and adhear it smoothly and then give it a quick tug and it will be on the the which you can just cut it however you want. Hope you gmhave a great day and thank you for so much information.

These look amazing! Tip to get holographic film of easier. If you make a mark across the cd with a razor (to get it started) then grab some clear packaging tape press it over top then peel back slowly. It will pull up the whole area, then you can cut up the transparent packaging tape with the film on into whatever size pieces you like 👍🏼 Hope this makes sense.

I came across what seems like a good hack for de layering CD's/DVD's. Put them in a pot and cover them with water, then boil them for about 3 mins, take them out, dry them and they should be able to break apart very easy, some brands may not work as well as others.

If you're going for a good opal look I recommend using a combo of rainbow alcohol ink and interference micas with white resin dye. It would probably work well to do a sort of mini dirty cup pour with all those resin colors mixed together. Something like, mix up some very translucent white then divide it up (leaving some plain white separate) and mix that with a bit of the interference powders (blue, red, purple and green would probably be best, though gold could work too). Then you could drop bits of each into a new cup to make a dirty pour but drop some rainbow alcohol ink in between some of the layers (or mix a tiny bit in with the white like the other colors) and lightly swirl before pouring. You could also pour different colors from each end of the dirty cup and keep spinning the cup between layers so you get different colors showing up when you pour but they don't mix too much. Final option would be just doing actual drops of each color either into a dirty cup mix or directly into the mold (a bit tedious but you'd have more precise control). One other thing that you can do is to "paint" the molds with a very thin layer of translucent white UV resin (I personally would add a bit of rainbow alcohol ink to this, maybe just a drop since alcohol ink often does not agree with UV resin so let it evaporate a bit before mixing it up) and then curing it before adding the CD film so you don't have to topcoat. Honestly, there are plenty of options to experiment with (though I'm not sure I explained myself well enough) so I'm sure you'll figure something out. Nice experiment either way. 😁👍

If the piece u made was glued down already on that last 1 and ya didn't want to wipe away any of the resin. Turning it upside-down as u start to cure it would've given it a touch more opacity if that's what u wanted. That's something I know from doing nails n it works the same for the uv resin

@Dawn R Dawn, I just tried, today, a tip from a commenter from somewhere, to place your cured-but-still-sticky UV resin pieces in a bowl of water, *then* cure them, right through the water. Et voilá! No more sticky UV pieces! I can now verify... *IT WORKS!!!* I was using JDiction UV resin, which is a bit easier to cure than Let's Resin UV, but this guy said it worked just fine. I had to use this water-curing method because I'd used Piñata white sinker, which UV resin just hates! And, it *still* worked! Whoot! So, take heart, and keep resining. 😊

I’m thinking if you can get some larger pieces of the cd papers off & glue them back to back. Maybe heat gun the cd a few seconds so it peels off more easily 🤔 With both sides shiny that could be cut or pinched into little pieces. Then push a few bits down in the resin to the surface of the mold and also stir a bunch in for the background flickers. I think you’re onto something with the white mica powder mixes. I wonder if the final back layer should be black tho.. bc that’s what sets off interference colors. It’s a lot to consider but it’s so fun 🤩 I was going thru my old CDs and they shine different colors depending on the CD company. ~~I also wondered if the CD papers (after glued back to back) would do better if they were coated with UV resins & cured first. UV may amplify or magnify the flickering from the lights hitting it in a different way. Anyways, so many good ideas in the comments here. Love to see what you do next! I adore the idea of using recycled materials 🙌. Thanks for sharing your beautiful art pieces 🌹🌹💯 💯

These are really lovely, Daniel! What a great idea! 👍😊 I like the opaque background! Yeah, I think that top coat on the last piece was a good idea! 👍😊 I'm glad you're planning on doing more. What would happen if you made a slightly tinted matrix with resin transparent DYE, instead of powders? I do like Let's Resin's dyes b'c they're very concentrated and mix in so nicely with resin and mica powders. I love my UV torch, too, even though I use my large lamp most of the time. It really does work! I will often partially cure the top of a piece with the lamp (so I won't have any (more) spills lol), then position my torch underneath the mold (pulled out past the table edge), turn my larger lamp back on, and cure front and back at the same time.

Why not lay it down as larger pieces and then poke it down to crinkle and crack it

ive noticed the subtle differances between the 11.99 mold and the 6.99 mold.,both look identical but i wonder if the sizes are differant, meanwhile, tho i am loathe to admit it,im still very much stuck on feathering.... but i keep trying,i think perhaps im trying too many colors,,for while i was thinking that perhaps i did not leave it alone long enough, but reguardless all that i have tried,3 gallons worth of resin at this point, the technique still leaves me trying again and again to accomplish this,i think am i using too much white over my colors, are my colors running into each other and ruining the effect, reguardless like a little ole shoe maker i will keep tinkering until one day,,,,,one day,ill get it,i did find a alcohol that was 91%,i have white, shallow deep white, deep whites,3 brands, tks for your help, your an ace
