Had to do this in a bonneville when i was 20 yrs old (37 now) wasnt all that bad took my time, took me 2 days maybe 2-3 hrs each day not rushing just tryna baggie n label all bolts ect those evap lines & connectors are so brittle & break easily, got car put back with new head gaskets and unfortunately the heads were warped, imagine due to over heat, started it right up and puffs of white smoke out tail pipe fml, i was young and with 1st child so didnt have anymore money to throw at it, it definitely was a beat me up humble moment, but like all things we overcome & even though thing's turned out the way it did i did enjoy learning

Did head gaskets on my 04 last year, that was a lot of fun 🙄. Worst part is, in hindsight, I probably didn’t need to go that far. Just needed LIM gasket. Oh well, it’ll be good for at least another 150,000 miles

I’m mentally preparing to do this job on my 2000 Impala 3.8. Hoping the heads are not warped, but in the off chance they need to be machined, about how much does a shop charge for that? I’ve never dug this deep into an engine before. Thanks, and looking forward to Part II.

@@v8dude609 I used to live in Houston, TX. My first car was an 03 GP GT. It was a hoopty that I slowly fixed up to be a nice car. Anyway, for the first 2.5 years of my ownership. It had a stuck open thermostat. I never fully noticed, it would take a considerable amount of time to warm up (about 30mins). But, I thought it was just a characteristic of the car. Big iron block v6, iron heads, auto trans (I was more accustomed to small aluminum 4cyl w/ manual trans that heat up within minutes). Plus it ran fine and no DTC. So I never really looked into it. It's so hot in Houston TX that I ran that car with a stuck open thermostat for 2.5 years without even realizing. Who knows how long it was stuck open prior to my ownership. The only reason I found out was I did intake gaskets on it. Also at the drag strip. It's common to take the thermo out completely. Less parasitic drag from the water pump and increased cooling. Wot produces a lot of heat.

@@carnage50x I tought my car taking time to reach operating temp was just the way that engine worked too haha, I also have a 15' Toyota hiace, 2tr-fe with a 5 speed manual, thermostat stuck shut once and blew almost every gasket possible out of the poor thing due to overheat, warped the aluminum head too, I know its said that the lack of a thermostat can cause cavitation and a number of other problems, but I just don't want to take risks of going trough that once again for a part I dont really feel necessary given the weather in wich I live, if id live in a colder place such as the northern US then a whole different story would be. (cool fact about the drag strip cars running fully open system, never knew but makes total sense)
