I'm still playing with my GoPro Max, and here's some 360 degree 'virtual reality' footage for you to check out. View it on your phone, tablet or computer and you can drag the screen around to choose a view. You can also tip and tilt your tablet/phone for the same effect, effectively 'steering' the view. It will appear distorted on TV.
For the videophiles out there I used GoPro Max Exporter to convert the .360 files to .MP4. As GoPro hadn't yet published their Windows Desktop Software I used PowerDirector 15 to edit the film.

    Very clever isn't it - the technology is brilliant - I really like the more realistic impression of speed and the ability to show your view on lifesavers or looking into road junctions - your ridings got a nice flow to it now as you're getting used to the bike and starting to relax with it to let it do it's job - if you can adapt that tank mount to fit properly, I'd keep it - I think it gives the most realistic "riders eye" view and being a slightly wider angle view it works well - good stuff

    Thanks Dale, yes its clever isnt it? I'm still looking for a solution for the fuel tank mount. I'll also see how it looks on the RaM mount on the bars, as even a little more distance between rider and camera will be useful.

    hi Neil like the new camera especially the way the horizon stays flat and the bike moves as you lean into the corners. i found myself watching mainly in forward facing position as when i panned the view around it showed mainly your arms and body. to get the best view i think you need to re position the camera. which i'm sure you have thought of keep the videos coming they are great to watch

    I should be able to upload in 5600 but for some reason the GoPro software limits the conversion to 4K. Bear in mind this is spread over the internal face if the 360 'globe's too. It is already in VR, so if you own a headset you can pan around.

    Thanks for the upload Neil. I think you've helped finalise my decision that the 360 cameras are not for me. I'm lazy and want to be shown what you want me to look at by your editing. Also the sample footage on-line looks great in bright sunny California or Australia but in murky old UK the picture quality suffers badly ... even watching the 4k feed. The stabilised footage in Hero mode you originally posted was much better, but even then not as good a plain vanilla camera. I look forward to seeing more examples, while I continue to ponder my next camera choice. I will just mention again you using of a high gear in slow corners. Yes, it's a torquey motor, but one day the revs will drop just that fraction to far, and the engine will cough/rattle and stall. Not good with bars turned and slightly leaned over. Just be mindful of this. Keep safe.

    Hi Mike, thanks for the input on cornering. I'm still working on my acceleration sense and gears, I reckon itll take me while to bed in properly and always appreciate your wisdom. Remember on the Max that you can opt to reframe the film in 16:9, whereby in front of the computer at home you can pan and zoom to choose what view you want to show. I'll be using a mix of all three modes - std Hero, reframe and pure 360. The image will improve I hope when gopro issue their windows software, also as they update the firmware on the camera itself. I notice btw theres a new Insta360 just out which might tempt you ...

    @@Back2TheBike Just read in the video description that you used the exporter to MP4. That will have removed a huge amount of resolution and may explain the grainy footage. If you can use the app on a phone or tablet you may be able to export full resolution to MP4. I'm sure it also looks better on your PC, as KZread does crush everything trying to balance storage/bitrate/network traffic with quality. It's bad that it seems quite common now for hardware to be released when the supporting software/drivers are not fit for purpose. It must constitute false advertising, saying a camera can do 5.6k 360 ... when clearly it can't on all platforms they claim it supports.

  • @richardd9976
    @richardd99764 жыл бұрын

    That's really great. I like that I can adjust the angle of the camera to suit my preference. In my case I like to see just a bit of the dash and handlebars - enough to give a reference point but leaving most of the picture for the view ahead. I can imagine other viewers prefer a different perspective - perhaps something closer to riders eye-level or a view which does not show the bars/screen at all. As I say, it's great. Was the audio more subdued than usual on this video?

  • @Back2TheBike

    @Back2TheBike

    Audio was an afterthought really Richard. I'll improve it next time around. I've just twigged you can just tilt and twist your phone or tablet to get the different views, much more intuitive than pressing and dragging. Now I need a a VR headset ...

    I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and find it very refreshing that your not trying to promote products as others do who have clearly a vested interest to say the least sooooo when I saw your latest upload re the GoPro Max (a camera I have been wondering wether to get) I was hoping it would sway me one way or the other BUT I'm sorry to say I'm back to square one. I have the GoPro Hero 8 and I'm delighted with the vid quality from what I would call the norm today of 1080P right thro to 4K, although I tend to shoot in 2700> The problem I have with the Max is the quality which some of your footage highlights, it blocks a lot in places even on a Mac Book Pro and the setting in KZread set to the highest. I may just get another Hero 8 for added scenes and wait till the Max 3 ;-)

  • @Back2TheBike

    @Back2TheBike

    Sorry for the late response, just seen your comment. I keep battling with the Max and try to understand the fuzzy edges. Two theories: 1. the level of vibration from my tank mount which is significant. Can the auto stabilisation cope? 2. I shoot in low sharpness, but am still playing with how to adjust this when I edit. I suspect the Max's sensors (with its 360 capability) mean that you don't get the crispness you see on a std Hero, or for that matter my mobile phone, which is much sharper.

    Techno Techno!! lol Could you fit a RAM mount claw fitting to the steering damper body? then a short RAM extension back towards you maybe...(Ram Mount RAP-B-400U Tough-Claw Small Clamp Base with 1" Diameter Rubber Ball) I use this clamp all the time as it securely fits to pretty much anything. Good footage Neil :)

  • @Back2TheBike

    @Back2TheBike

    4 жыл бұрын

    I considered that HH, but then the damper moves with the steering which I think would continually move the image and distract. The challenge is to create a fixed mount somewhere on the bike's centre line, with more space between me and the camera but that can see the instruments. Im goingnto try it out on the satnav RAM mount though. I dont like the idea of sticking on a pole like a medieval knight as I've seen some do, looks daft, insecure and dangerous. Thoughts?

    @@Back2TheBike Yes I don't like the look of the long poles either. I still say your best option is an adaptor on the fuel cap surround for a suitable ram mount. The mount ball joints will give way on impact but then a man of your talents shouldn't be crashing anyway ;)

    Check you're watching at the highest setting as often YT defaults to something lower. You should be able to get 4K, but remember that's spread over a 360 field of view so wont be as sharp as 4K standard mode. Frame rate is limited to 30fps. I still think it looks sharper than the Max Hero mode 1080p/60fps.
