36 - Cleaning Up Old Junk & Burn Pits: A Week's Task With The Little Digger & a Rake!

In our last video, we left you with the discovery of a lifetime while clearing out the property: an old red tractor! This week, the cleaning continues as we've found trash scattered around a couple of elderberry trees and a peach tree, all piled up and overgrown through the years. And as you know Philippe by now: once he sees something, he can't just leave it there. He's determined to get it cleaned up. The only challenge is: what to do with the contaminated soil? After some pondering and research, we've found a solution. We'll be planting specific plants known for their soil-cleansing properties. Join us again this week as we tidy up this area, one scoop and one rake at a time.

You may consider covering the poluted soil with wood chips or directly mix the wood chips in. Wood chips will help to establish a healthy soil life, bacteria, funghi, worms etc. The naturally occuring bacteria will feed on the pollution and help to break it down. Maybe the metal guy has an old metal bed frame with bed spring, it is a great sieve for dirt. Place it under a 40 to 60 degree angle and throw the soil onto it. Thank you for the filming and sharing!

Hey Jeroen, great suggestion i have enough wood chips! I will put them in with the tiller and then put the plants on. The soil doesn't look bad plenty of worms etc. in it while i was cleaning so nature was already taking care of it i am just speeding up the process by removing the visible parts. I have a sieve coming in the upcoming videos.

Stinging nettles grow well where soil has been disturbed and are among those plants which purify and improve soil. They are also nutritious and once served as the main meal for the Roman army. Their scientific name comes from the latin word for vegetable garden. I hope you will leave a small corner of your beautiful land for them. You may find them useful.

It’s hard work and it takes years to clean it m, if you have a big property. I found a massive amount of straw strings. I used the good ones to crochet outdoor mats. Here in Alaska they don’t do recycling. Not even glass or paper. It all goes to a landfill. Living most of my life in Europe it’s mind blowing how far behind the US is compared to Europe. One of the reason I will go back home eventually. Anicia, you editing is superb!!! It’s still winter here and I really enjoyed the beautiful beginning with all the birds and as you know I really like your narration. You are spot on with cutting and blending in music. Love the atmosphere you are always creating. Thank you for all the work to produce such beautiful videos.

That's a creative solution with the straws! It's too bad there isn't a system in place yet for recycling. Maybe in the future?🙏 It might be up to individuals to set the example.

The task seems monumental and the work is very hard, but you'll rest easier over the years knowing the soil is clean and you've done the right things. Taking short cuts usually has unforeseen consequences and costs more in the long run. What a wonderful example you're setting for your children and your community. Have you named the rooster? There are plenty of funny names out there. Maybe you can select a few and ask you're viewers to vote on their favorite.

My grandparents lived on a farm back in the 1930s-50s and there were no recycle centers or even a town dump close enough for them to use. They had 100 acres and they chose a small area 1/2 a mile behind their house to use for a dump. When my mother inherited the property, we inspected it and amazingly enough, there was an old model T Ford in the dump! Yeah i didn't know it existed on this level, i knew they were using hemp to clean pfas/pfos pollution but apparently you can clean loads of other contaminants with plants. The only downside is the time it takes and you have to get rid of the plants, you cant just let them compost again.

Congratulations on clearing the land so carefully. I totally agree about removing as much of the plastic, glzss and man-made materials as possible, but agree with others on here that I dont think the soil is too "poisoned". Turning it over, raking it and aerating it like you have done will have made a huge difference. It isn't industrial toxicity, and I'm sure it would recover if you put it down to grass. But i totally admire what you are doing!!

I get for what you want to with the land that clearing the plastic and glass is important, but some rubbish dumps, if they've been used over many generations, can be old and sometimes contain useful or even important artefacts. It sounds as tho' all yours are recent dumps but it might be worth keeping an eye open for older dumps. They will have existed.

Try to get a propper rake. Its hard to find a new good one nowadays as labor has become mostly mechanised and the nescesity to operate a good farmers handtool less imperative. Look arround for a "brocanteur' who sells all kind of old stuff..If you see an old axe there or hand axe for example it is likely to be a "timely/work proven" good one..( I wish I could come soon to help you find that🙂) A good hayfork/fork for example has to have the propper bend, so that when you stand upright with your hand on it in working position (skill is here also important) the fork needs to be in a horizontal position on the ground with the tips slightly bend upwards. Once you've experience the worth of a good axe/hayfork/handtool it will become your "baby" and you will cherish it, recognise its worth and send a mental thank you to the craftsman who made it.. It is a loss that mass production has overruled craftmanship when it comes to making farmers handtool, and perhaps also in even more other trades... Odintje is walking!!!🥰 Good work editing Anicia, all very entertaining🙂
