    I love how every time you react to a musical, I get an entirely new perspective by osmosis! There are a lot of songs that I haven't given as much thought to in the past, but the amount of investment and analysis you put into everything as an audience always ends up reshaping my view a little bit and gives the song that much more meaning. I feel like you're the ideal audience for art, you just put so much effort into creating a meaningful experience on your end that so many artists would be honored by. Have a lovely end of the year, and I hope you keep singing in 2023 and onward.

    aaaaaa 35mm! I love so many of the musicals you’ve checked out so far, like Ride the Cyclone and Six, and that’s why I feel like you’d like a musical called We Are The Tigers too! It’s one of my favourites and the cast recording comes with a spoiler warning for your listening pleasure

    Oh, I don't know if someone has said this yet but I'm pretty sure the writer of this musical's husband is a photographer- so essentially they both discussed meaning of art and the stories they tell together!

    Recently found out about Ride the Cyclone and found your video on it through my recommendations so I came back to see what I missed; lo and behold you reacted to this!!! Ahh!!! This album was one of those 'scream out in distress' kind of sing-alongs for me (I mean crazytown really carried my break downs lmao) as a person who daydreams A LOT, I could associate so many stories with the song which so akin to attaching a story to a picture.

I absolutely fell in love with the concept and stories from first listen and am happy people have been paying more attention to it too! For your next reactions, I’d very much love to recommend Jagged Little Pill for that pop rock vibe you were talking about, Once if you’re craving the feels and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee if you’re looking for a laugh!

    The Ballad of Sara Berry had such a hold on me for the longest time lol! I think around the same time I discovered this musical I also discovered 'The Wild Party' (Andrew Lippa's version) so they've always been tied together in mind, mainly due to the containment of the stories (35MM takes place within a single gallery and TWP takes place within a single 24 hour period if you disregard the opening number that introduces the two main characters). You should check out 'The Wild Party'. Could make a fun video, comparing the two different versions of it.

  • @Chromaggia
    @Chromaggia Жыл бұрын

    YESSSSS what a way to end the year!!! Your lineup this month was feels like made for me 😂 One of my favorite things about 35MM is how ambiguous the songs are! You can have so much fun dissecting the lyric and playing with their meanings (for example, I firmly believe that Crazytown is the narrator’s personal hell, and the “hole inside his brain” mentioned at the start was the gunshot that killed him. You interpreted it as a nightmare, which is also a great theory. It’s just 👌🏻 chef’s kiss) That’s one of the big things I was looking forward to in this reaction, seeing what meanings you would find in the songs. Also, I just felt the need to mention this because I found it so fascinating, the inspiration for “Leave Luanne” came after Ryan Scott Oliver looked at the photo and said, “that’s horrifying. who would want to come home to that?” The fact that he came up with the story of a woman trying to escape from her abuser from that is super smart but also extremely tragic.

    Watch merrily we roll along!! It's another Sondheim piece. When I first watched it I balled my eyes out and then watched it again the very next day. And given how you reacted to into the woods (pretty much exactly how I did when I first watched it) you'll love this musical. Btw, I also went into a Bernadette Peters obsession and watched Sunday soon afterwards too, haha. By the way, I love your channel!

    If you're looking for more Sondheim proshots, Pacific Overtures is a good pick! It's about Japan's forced reopening at the hands of the US and the sudden changes that it brought. The show's styled after traditional Japanese theatre and music, mainly Kabuki. Because of the unfamiliar, foreign storytelling and the full Asian cast basically required, Pacific Overtures is one of Sondheim's least performed and underrated musicals. Yet, it's recognized as one of his most beautiful and ambitious shows. As said, the proshot is up on KZread. I recommend that since it's practically impossible to get context from the OBC. Every other recording is, in some way, worse, ranging from worse orchestrations to casting mainly white actors for a show about the Japanese.

    I’ve commented before and all but I recently got a physical copy for the album and looked at the photos a bit more. When looking at the hemming and hawing picture the houses in the background due to how lit up they are look like they’re kinda on fire which works because both the singers in hemming and hawing clearly don’t want to end their relationship so even though the song wasn’t made when the photo was took but the houses are like a visual of their relationship burning

    In the party goes with you, I interpret the whole “taking back just one of my yes’s” bit as she actually singing about her affair partner, and wishing that she could take back her marriage vows so she could be properly with him. You know the whole party thing being a metaphor for them being together just for a good time? Idk 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Question: Have we covered enough English language musicals on this channel to confront the European musicals? Not as in the ones that have been translated into English (apart from Les Miserables - started in France, then was rewritten and went to England, then went back to France with the rewrites it had in England, best way to tell the difference is in 'A La Volonte Du Peuple' - this is the French version from BEFORE the show went to England: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f5ec0qOwk7rApZs.html and this is the French version from AFTER the show went to England: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKei17mImMa8fZc.html , for some reason I like the original French version better). So for those who don't know, France and Austria have had a series of their own original musicals. The more successful musicals of each country generally spread around the rest of Europe and in Asia as well (chiefly Korea and Japan, both co-ed Japanese theatre companies and the entirely female-based Japanese theatre based company Takarazuka). I don't know if any Austrian musical has been performed in France, but I do know that the French musical of 'Romeo et Juliette' from 2001 did go to Austria in 2005. Found the original 2001 French musical by mistake, led me to the 2005 production of 'Romeo und Julia' and found he rest of them from there. The French musicals are generally described as a 'Comodie Musicale' or a 'Musicale Spectacle', and someone rightly described them as being like going to a concert with some plot line in-between each song rather than a play with songs in-between acts like other musicals. Still, they're a lot of fun to watch, mostly pop stuff but still mostly enjoyable. My two personal favourites of 'Notre Dame de Paris' from 1999 and 'Romeo et Juliette: De la Haine a l'Amour' from 2001 - there was a revival in France for both of them, forget which year for Notre Dame but know that there was a 2010 revival called 'Romeo et Juliette: Les Enfants de Verone' with some changes to the song list. Prefer the 2001 version personally though. Austrian musicals are much the same as Anglo-ones. The ones I've seen or heard about are based either on historical figures or books. The most popular one is the musical about 'Elisabeth', the Empress of Austria who's life is now being portrayed by Netflix through the show 'The Empress'. They don't hold anything back and the Austrians (and the Germans for that matter) are definitely not stingy when it comes to applause, they know how to give it their all. If anyone here thinks this channel is ready for Europe, let me know and I'll provide a list of options/requests. Otherwise what I'd also suggest for this channel is a comparison of the three TV movies of Rogers and Hammerstein's 'Cinderella' - the 50s one with Julie Andrews, the 60s one with Lesley Ann Warren and the multiracial one from the 90s with Brandy, Whitney Houston, Bernadette Peters and Whoopi Goldberg. Just a suggestion unless Cinderella has already been covered here. Have a great day everyone, Happy New Year!
