I think the new Civic Type R, the FL5, is still designed by engineers. They managed to wrangle fat 265mm tyres, standard-fit forged BBS wheels, manual-only and bespoke body panels past the accountants for example.🙂 The CR-V and HR-V... Not so much, lol. Quite an accountant influence on the new Integra with the CVT too for that matter, unfortunately.

The secondary latch it because the stock cable is very easy to pull through the fender well on the DC2. This allows access to the engine bay and battery as you mentioned. It was the most common attack method when these were being stolen left and right back in the day. That is how they got my dads.

The Integra Type R is a piece of art - well before its time. I'm proud to say I have the exact same car, including the full body kit - 315,000Kms and still going strong - changed original disc pads at 225,000Kms, because I never use the brakes when I'm driving. Stitched door cloth was cut too short, but it's easy to just tuck it back and glue with clear glue. I've had 22 years of utter thrills and enjoyment driving this car. Bequeathing it to my son - it will progress to being a very sought after item in years to come.
This car gets my ❤. It’s just pure joy to make a VTEC Honda sing. This car was the first factory N.A. car to make 100hp/liter. Specific HP. The number of benchmarks Honda puts down is just ridiculous.
Definitely sounds like a bent rack. You can try and adjust the preload by loosening the large lock nut and then adjusting the 14mm head (rack guide) on the back of the pinion housing. Most of the OEM seals are still available to rebuild it. Be sure to drill out the stake before removing the threaded cap on the passenger side if you try to rebuild.
Disconnect the outer tie rods from the knuckle and check back and forth movement, good way to check smoothness of the ball joints. I have had that happen on a customer car, where a ball joint was super tight and binding which gave the vehicle terrible memory steer.
The bonnet/hood lock was a great idea and defo saved cars from scumbags. Most them also had the option to kill a circuit in the engine bay as well, so even if the scumbags bypassed the cuts in the cabin they were still screwed. My dad bought one when I was a kid we were on holidays in the US in the 80's and moved it into every car he had after and I have the same one in my DC2 today. 😀 One thing I've seen a lot of people say is that these cars are harder to heel and toe. I find them perfect for it, but I think it's down to technique. Some guys heel and toe with the ball of their foot resting on the edge of the brake pedal and the rest of the ball of their foot blips the throttle. If you look at old style heel and toe or the Japanese guys in Best Motoring vids out there they literally heel and toe. Their "toe" is on the brake and they rotate their foot anticlockwise and put their heel on the throttle.
I used to remove the ecu and sleep with it. Had an alarm and a steering wheel and pedal club lock. Save my car from being stolen twice but still got vandalized.
The simplicity of cars in the 90s was just so awesome. I love those white rims. Simple interior... No one was talking about oh the dash is not soft touch, and there isn't any room for my head. It was a car, with a motor, pedals, gear you get in, hit a cassette and drive. No Nancy bs
@TassieLorenzo
2 жыл бұрын
The dash is soft-touch though (i.e., padded with foam backing) same as an EG or EK. 🙂 It's the DC5 & EP3 that went to a hard plastic dash (complete with the myriad other cost-cutting like deleting the double-wishbone). I think it's that 7th-gen that is really the low point of Honda cost-cutting (perhaps the first year of the 2012 9th-gen sedan & coupe too, though the European 9th-gen hatchback that formed the basis of the FK2 Type R always had nicer trim than the sedan).
I still remember fondly the moment of affirmation that car gave me about 15 years ago. Warms the cockles to hear it scream again.

check the steering lash adjustment on the rack, there should be a bolt that has a locking nut around it where the steering column meets the rack. you could readjust it and it could be enough, but it is possible the teeth on the pinion are a little worn when on-center.

Getting a R is special enough, but buying it from a friend would make it priceless and have so much meaning to it. ❤️
For those of us that grew up in the era of the legendary Type R it will always be a dream car. It is so sad that the US never got the CTR. Now I guess the wait is on for a H22 CRX build to happen on this channel just to bring the nostalgia full circle. Or even just a period correct B swap CRX momentum car build. The Honda's of the era were never stupid fast but they were fun as hell. And getting a FWD car set up to rotate can be rewarding and it forces you to learn different aspects of car control rather than just the smokey drift stuff. Shit the silly Falken Civic HF drift hatch was crazy to see getting even more sideways than the S chassis cars at the first FD events in the states.

I can't find the source, but I remember reading how this acura was the most commonly stolen car in Ontario. And second place went to the same car, just the prior model year lol
I tell all my friends that the DC2 Integra Type R may not be fast, but it is the by far the best driving FWD car I’ve ever had the opportunity to drive. I have a list of ultimate sports cars to drive before you die. DC2 ITR is on it.
Razo pedal straight from Pacific Mall/Market Village.
Man that R is gorgeous!! I’ve lusted after that car since my Highschool days while driving a 2000 Civic Si.
Those Razo pedals takes me back...those were my first aftermarket pedals that I put in the 90s in my Civic EG hatchback.
My eg hatch had a steering issue where it wouldn't return on centre. Replaced ball joints upper and lower And wow! What a huge difference!
the hood lock is called a chapman lock, I had one in the 80s/90s which was also wired into the aftermarket alarm. Car theft was a huge problem in the 80s / 90's before automakers started installing anti theft measures as standard equipment
Lol the chirp commentary made me happy. I have a Version 4 STi swapped wagon and it'll chirp third!
You made the competition, so you get to make the rules 🤣. This is a great series so far! Love the car choices and I'm not a big Honda guy.
Once you get that rack sorted, it looks like you won't have much left to do, mechanically. Canadian translation: strap on your tuques, grab some twofers, timbits and double doubles and just give’r until she starts rippin’ again.
Not sure if it was intentional but that song playing in the background while doing the oil change had some huge Gran Turismo 4 vibes to it. Memories of a well-wasted youth.
Man we can tell you guys are loving this Honda series! I am stoked to see you guys ripping some TEC and working on these gems!
Driving experience is just as important as raw hp or speed... Two favorite cars I never should have sold was an S2000 and a 5th gen Prelude.
That’s a Chapman hood lock. Very old school. I installed one on my 1964 Chevy C10 because the hoods did not lock back then.
i had a very similar issue in the steering that turned out to be a partially seized joint between the rack and the steering column. Those u-joints don't move uniformly through their rotation so it was really just one spot on it that was sticky. the rest felt okay. Especially if someone tried to clean it with some brake clean on purpose or accidently, the minimal grease in there is easily wrecked after 20+ years. Like you guys said though, crash damage is a thing but the steering joint is easy to check when pulling the rack out so you can at least see if all the u-joints move freely.
Ahh! the 1-2 Shift Chirp and the 2-3 shift chirp everyone tries... nostalgia kicked in and missing my integra.
I know the grease drys out on Honda racks to. Take it off and carry out a inspection.........then order a new rack 😆
Hot damn based on that drive, you're in my neck of the woods! Gonna keep my eyes peeled now for this Integra Type R!
I had an 01' GSR, bone stock (intake, stage 2 clutch) and I could chirp into 3rd. Loved that car.
Nice job torquing the spark plugs, love seeing people do this. Now please use it on the oil drain plug too! 😂. Filter…. If it does the job who cares if it’s blue! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I had this same steering issue with my 4runner, when I would turn it never came back, turned out to be super stiff and dry ball joints.
If I recall correctly… when these were new, near new, they were one of the most stolen cars in the US.

All Integras were in the top 3 stolen cars for years. Not a fun car to insure as a teenager.
That hood lock reminds me of a Chapman lock my parents had on their then new 1985 Camaro IROC-Z when we lived in the Miami-Dade area.
As others have mentioned, that engine had quite a knock on dry startup. It may hold out just fine for normal use but who knows. With the value of these engines it's highly recommend to properly correct this issue before it becomes another Junk B. Not worth blowing it up due to a limited budget.
the rolling footage really shows this car in it's best form.
Straight from Honda-tech: "part # 53601-ST7-A63 SAME FOR ALL 00 & 01 INTEGRAS'". So a used or remanufactured rack out of a 00-01 Integra would work. A quality rebuilt rack is about $300-$500 USD.
K&N sells the best oil filter according to tests performed by Engine Masters.
16:04 you can bet that CRX Del Sol was snapping his neck towards the Type R
my brother has one of those hood locks on his civic back in 1998, his had a built in immobilizer that turned on when the lock was on. you also needed a special key to lock it on and off.
Another good test is to loosen the rack mount bolts. Make sure the subframe or a bent bolt isn't binding the rack.
Love the honda content guys!
Valvo-sludge! Better than a bucket-o-lard. Anyone who complains about not using a Honda filter can shut up if they don’t know what a HAMP filter with a band clamp strapped to it is 😂
It sounds SO good. Can’t wait so see the next videos.
Back when I was a police rotation tow truck driver, I recovered so many stolen Integras and Civics, it became a running joke that we liked to play with the police dispatchers when they called. The theives didn't bother with any of the things mentioned in the video or the comments. They would simply take a hammer to the steering column and pull out the ignition donut. The cops would get an extra chuckle when the stolen vehicle would have The Club still installed.
Great vid and you made me laugh big time when you spoke about the oil filter. Everyone was thinking it including me... and then you brought it up right at the end haha! Also, the oil weight for this motor should be 5w-40.

factory specified oil for the B18C5 is 5w30, but I have run 5w40 in B and K series Honda engines for many years of racing with good results, so either works just fine in these engines in my experience.
I would start with checking for a bent tie rod before jumping into the rack itself being bad

I don't think anyone is being serious, K&N oil filters are top shelf, you see them used on many racing engines, be they Chevy small blocks or Honda B or K series. 🙂
Since it was hit on the left more than likely the left side of the rack is bent. Type R rack isn't unique, just get a similar year rack from any model Integra 94-97 or 98-01. Or do an EG manual rack swap, and if you want it to bolt in like OE grab the subframe.
16:05 you can see there is a Honda Civic del Sol to his left on the road 😆
