There are a handful of systems I would often think about with curiosity and wonder. Surely I would never own these "rare" or exotic systems. Well, fixing video game consoles as a hobby changed all that and all of a sudden they were in reach. I love my Neo Geo and game on it often. I'm glad to own an Atari Jaguar despite the system's shortcomings, and today I've made another dream come true with my first pair of TurboGrafx-16s.
I purchased two of these consoles "for parts or not working" from eBay. Both listings said the consoles were "untested". I spent about $350 on this bundle ($210 + $120 for the systems from eBay and $20 for the AV adapter from Amazon). In this episode I handle these beauties for the first time and get a peek inside.
As an adult with a disposable income, fixing broken retro tech has become quite the passion of mine. I don't know if I would have appreciated these systems as a young kid, but it's even more special to own them as an adult. Hope you enjoy this journey of discovery and (for some of you) a trip down memory lane.

It's nice to be surprised and have both working as is. It would have been fantastic if you got the cardboard outer sleeves with the other games. The jewel case was in a paper box like the nes, snes, etc with the artwork. Keith Courage in Alpha Zones came with the system and was only in a jewel case.

My aunt worked for NEC of America back in the early 90’s. I remember one summer when she brought over 3 TG16’s new in boxes and a bagful of games for me and my cousins. We played the CRAP out of these. Splatterhouse blew my mind. Neutopia was also a hit. I still remember the soundtrack. We had the TurboTap and had an AWESOME time playing MotoRoader with my cousins. Still one of my all time favorite games. Great job on the video. Brings back great memories.

Perhaps I'm just particularly unlucky, but for me, "untested" on Ebay usually means... "It's f***ed. I spilled coffee on it, it stopped working, so I opened it up, stripped a bunch of screws because I didn't have the right screwdriver, and snapped some of the plastic standoffs. Then I proceeded to poke around the motherboard with a $15 soldering iron from Target, melting components, lifting traces, and leaving big globs of solder in random spots. To my surprise, this failed to coax the console back into life, so now I present it here for you to buy."

Lol. That's exactly why I expect these to be entertaining videos when I buy them untested but I dunno I've had some pretty good luck with my "for parts" finds. I think the majority of resellers are honest folks trying to make a living on eBay but there will always be people that will misrepresent something to make a bit of money.

I personally have found that the majority of the “Broken” items I buy on eBay are actually functional and if not it’s generally something really simple. I bought a bunch of Sega genesis consoles that the seller said didn’t power on. A few minutes into testing I realized that all of them simply had damaged LEDs and everything else worked fine. You just never know though. I have had working SegaCDs that became major projects. Was hoping to see you do some repairs on this one as it’s one of the few consoles I don’t have. Great video as always! #gamegear

Wow...does this ever take me back. I used to work at toys r us way back when these first came out. I worked in the "security booth" where you'd go to pick up game cartridges and consoles and stuff like that. I also had the "job" of demonstrating the systems to customers. This meant I had the key to the case and I would open it up, pop in whatever game they wanted to try out and then we'd play a little 2 on 2. Suffice it to say this was part of my job I REALLY liked. I vividly recall "Keith Courage" and how everyone was just blown away with it.

Informative video as always. As a long time owner/fan of the TG-16 devices, I would certainly check the following: 1. The RF input is a known failure point. The port can break away from the board causing a fuzzy/lost video signal. As you noted, you did test/see that the RF inputs work which is good. 2. Many Turbo systems (and others from this era) have capacitors which have failed (or will soon fail). This can cause issues with lost video, lost sound, or both. Might be worth seeing a capacitor replacement video if you're up for it - maybe with one of the known defective units you are planning to buy. 3. While significantly more expensive, might be interested in a Turbo Express (their handheld unit) which is kind of a technical marvel but does suffer from the same points of failure. Finally - I recently took a gamble on 'defective' Atari Lynx unit that was sold as having no power. I received the unit which had some corrosion in the battery compartment and once I cleaned it up (and put a game in the unit), it operated perfectly. I'm not sure the seller realized that the Lynx (like the Jaguar) will not power up without a game inserted in it.

This was a really common system back in the day. There was a big Turbo section at Toys R Us and these things were sold just about everywhere. At the time, the system & games were a bit cheaper than Sega Genesis. Due to this, a lot of my friends' parents had decided "this is the system for my kid!" The Turbo Duo on the other hand, was a pricier system. I recall I was the only one of my friends who had that model. Kind of wish I still had the Duo today.

I miss my old TG16. I lost it in a move about 7 years ago. It was still in the original box, Styrofoam AND plastic bag it came in. I loved that thing as a kid, and just gravitated away from it due to not many places selling the card games back in the day that and the PlayStation came out. I had the turbo tap, three controllers and the arcade joystick (whatever it was called). I only remember having like four games though. Legendary Axe, Keith Courage, TV Sports Hockey and Splatterhouse. I was surprised on how efficiently they made the case around the board. I was disappointed that I didn't get to see more of the board though. Ill have to check your shop for refurb stuff I guess and hope to get lucky.

  • @thelovebat
    @thelovebat Жыл бұрын

1:52 I think the reason it's a 5 controller multitap instead of the usual 4 is because of some of the sports games like basketball or hockey games will field 5 players at a time, so a 5 player multitap would allow you and your friends to play as the entire team for those particular sports games. Local multiplayer was much more popular for sports games back in the 1990s up to the mid 2000s, so that seems like the most likely reason for the multitap being like that. 7:58 The back cover I think is used to protect the rear parts of the console from dust buildup, as well as giving the exterior a more rectangular shape when you're not using the console.

I started to buy stuff from eBay in the last couple of years (I'm a Brazilian living in Japan), and one thing that I thought it's funny, is that itens from the USA, would value a little more if people actually cleaned the itens before taking pictures and selling it. I bought an Atari Jaguar in working condition, but it's just all dusty. My Snes Killer Instinct, all dusty too, the "repair" was only to clean the cartridge. In Brazil and Japan, it's common sense that you clean it before selling, to look in better shape and you can ask for a little more money.

Couple years back I spotted an ebay listing, buy it now £4 for an Avia watch that said the listing was full of water, required a new battery and didn't work... So I sprung for it thinking it would be a prime resto project and what arrived was a grubby and tarnished but otherwise unblemished condition solid gold Avia watch from 1947 and with two twirls of the winder sprang into life too O.o It keeps better time than a brand new Seiko and I know the gold value alone must be worth more than the £4 I paid. The gods of ebay can be kind and I always know that if I need something the gods of ebay provideth :P

i think it will be hard to find one that has been tested and listed as non functional just because the seller knows it would likely be worth even less than just listing it as untested. you definitely got a pretty decent deal. sold my spare with 3 games a couple months ago for $300. even stuff like that multi tap or extra controllers are expensive. $50 for a multi tap or $25 for a aftermarket controller ads up quick. i bought my spare off someone just for the multi tap, extra controller and some games i did't have. luckily broke even and got to keep the extra's

1st gen are typically very reliable IMO, much like their PC engine counterparts. The first point of failure typically (as with anything) are the caps in the audio path. IIRC there may be a few tantalum caps in the power side that fail. The joypad ports are fairly robust and I've not came across one with cracked solder joints. The Turbo Duo on the other hand... Sheesh. Every one, a pandora's box.

Every Sega CD Model 2 that I've bought described "non functional" had just needed the pico fuse replaced. One even shipped with the wrong power adapter that blew the fuse to begin with. While the unit is open, you can replace the sram with an fram and the battery will no longer be needed to keep the saves. Of course this result is not guaranteed, your mileage may vary.

I sell on ebay and sometimes when you buy a lot of stuff the price of buying parts for everything to see if it is working outweighs the profit of just selling it "For parts as-is" and you don't have to worry about returns that way.

Funny; the Turbografx I bought several years back also didn't work over RF according to the seller, and I bought it as a gamble. When I finally could test it over composite with an EverDrive, it worked flawlessly. Kind of curious if that's a common issue with these systems.

@@honestguy7764 I actually did test it once over RF on one of my CRTs. And, just like the seller described, it didn't do anything. Once I got the Spark Plug, I was able to test and confirm that the system works just fine over Composite (and, more recently, I've tested it over RGB). The old modulator was just dead I presume.

Nice setup, low fuss and you can play all your favorite games on original hardware. Composite video is plenty to satisfy my retro gaming needs, although with all the RGB mods and upscaler options for retro consoles these days I realize that's not a popular opinion. To each his own. Nice to hear from folks that actually just enjoy the system and its games. Cheers.
