My mom and grandma went through the depression. Grandma always said, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". I've lived by that all my life and it's a good little jingle to remember.

I have horses. The blankets need to be washed, repaired and waterproofed every year. I used to pay someone to do it. But, you do that for two years, and that was the price of a new blanket. When we needed a new washer, I went for a front load because I could wash sleeping bags and horse blankets in it. So, that saved me money. I came up with an easy way to patch the blankets. That saved me time, money and aggravation. To waterproof them, I bought the waterproofing that's sold in cans. I cannot tell you how much money I've saved over the years by doing this.

I went for a year with no water in my house while saving money to get the pipes repaired. I didn't know I had leaking pipes until I got a 300.00 water bill. I shut the water off to the house, (you can do this at the house, if you do it at the street you need permission). I then got my water in large container's at the car wash, I went to the laundromat to wash clothing. Drinking water came from the gas station water hose the have outside (I ask first). One of my neighbors let me fill up a old milk gallon container everyday. It took me almost 8 months to gather enough money to have the whole yard dug up and all the pipes replaced. While the pipes and the water got fixed my front and side yard was left a bumpy mess. Now, I am so looking forward (sarcasm) to renting a rototiller to even out and replant grass. What an adventure owning your house has become.

you are so very right. My dogs chewed the corners of our cabinets beyond a few little dents...the edges of the bottom on 3 corners were chewed into sharp points with much of the wood missing. I fixed them by watching KZread videos and using wood fill and exato knives and leveling rulers. You can not really tell they were ever chewed. Also, my husband and I bought a house that needed lots of repairs, we learned by watching you tube videos, how to update vanities, how to fix molding on our garage, how to seal our own driveway, how to fix a concrete sidewalk and on and on. We manage our own lawn and do lawn care and maintanence of shrubs and perrenials. If we can do it anyone can do it. We had been living in a condo for over 20 years so you most definately can become a do-it-yourselfer and save literally thousands of dollars a year each year on some home repairs!!!

SO many great ideas Sara!! I am currently teaching my 11 year old grand daughter to sew. (Sewing skips generations in our family!). She has made two bandanas for her little dog, and a pair of comfy P.J. pants. I found her a sewing case at Goodwill for $3, and have given her some supplies for it. And, as you said, I told her how important it is to be able to mend/fix clothing. Also, as far as limiting meat consumption and bulk cooking, I have 2 pounds of ground beef if the freezer and have been hungry for meatloaf. But I decided at this time I couldn't justify making a meatloaf. I have decided that I will use it for a couple of casseroles to freeze in individual servings, and it will go a lot farther.
