It's all brotherly love, and being a better man. Like you, I was also skeptical of what I might see, and I have never seen anything corrupt. It's said that you need to believe in a higher power, but aren't specific of which higher power, just so non-Christian members don't feel left out. But even in lodges, there's a bible, a Quaran, and a Torah, amongst other holy books.
