337. Jet washing my cabin cruiser

Having brought the boat out of water for refurbishment, it first needed a really good shower to get some of the long-standing muck off. It's still a bit mucky in places but it was a good start.

Indeed, she appears to be structurally sound overall, and those holes can be dealt with rather easily - especially when compared to working on steel hulls. The hardest part will be matching the colour on the finishing coats of the patches.

@@CruisingTheCut Make sure your first work is where it's the least important. When my wife and I rebuilt our first house, she learned to tape and float sheetrock/plaster board/drywall as she finished the walls. Working to repair fiberglass is not difficult. I was a whitewater kayaker for many years, using fiberglass boats. Repairs were commonplace due to banging off of rocks. Easy to do just requiring preparation. Start on the bottom in unseen spots, and once you get the hang of it do the upper body repairs. Use Saran wrap to keep it smooth and keep the bugs off while it sets up. It peels right off afterwords.

Thanks for this update. I've been following this with interest. If you don't mind, here are a couple of suggestions from the other side of the pond. I would suggested fully cleaning off any bottom paint so you can see any below-the-waterline hull damage that needs to be address. In addition to looking for holes and scars, check for soft spots. Then give the entire hull a good cleaning with more than just water followed by a coat of epoxy and then a good anti-fouling bottom paint. I don't know if these products are available there but I used the following on the 28 foot Catalina I owned for about 12 years. All from Interlux (I'm not selling anything, just had excellent service from these products). Fiberglass Surface Prep for cleaning, InterProtect 200E for the expoxy coat, and VC-17 for the bottom paint. It's very thin, contains teflon (make you go fast ;) ) and copper dust to prevent stuff from growning on the bottom. The VC-17 dries very quickly and it's easy to reapply when needed. As for the rail on the bow, I would personally remove it and fill the holes in the deck. It is clearly not original to the boat and I think the boat would look better without it. Add a couple of horn cleatsnear where the aft end of the current rail meets the deck on which you can hang fenders when at the dock. Make sure all of the cleats have suitable backing plates inside and are bedded well to prevent water ingress. Make sure all other deck hardware is also properly backed and bedded. If you choose to keep the rail, find someone who can correct the starboard side bend and then, instead of wooden wedges on the deck, use fiberglass plate to make the wedges. Not as easily worked as wood but they won't rot. Lots to do but it will never be easier than now. Good luck.

David, I really enjoy your calm demeanor as you uncover new issues with Twiggy. Either you had some forewarning or these issues are not that bad. I am confident you have a plan how you will get Twiggy into proper shape. I am enjoying these videos.

Everytime I look at a video about this boat it sadly reminds me of an important principle I learned in Economics 101... ... The Sunk Cost Fallacy. Because, it appears there will be no end to the costly and time-consuming repairs this boat will need. Life is too short to obsess over a lost cause, especially for good blokes like you.

And that is *exactly* why it's a terrible idea to view everything from an economic perspective: you are entirely missing the far more important factors of enjoyment, satisfaction and learning.

I wasn't going to say sell it, I was going to say time to learn how to patch fiberglass. In America we use a 2 part auto putty called Bondo for a multitude of repairs and the covering of sins, not sure what you call it there, but embrace it, it's going to be your new friend

Great job. Use a scraper to remove the anti foul. I made one from an old chisel where I re ground the end to about 80deg to prevent it digging in. Need to let the holes dry and then use west epoxy system to repair. Should be a great project and great fun to use.

It's a fiberglass boat - EASILY repairable. Enjoy working on it. We successfully replaced all the wood on a boat transom using a vacuum bagging process. It worked excellent to pull the new internal marine plywood up tightly against the existing fiberglass on the hull. A right angle grinder with a very aggressive carbide carving head did marvelous at removing all the old rotted bits. There are even dust hoods available to for these to help extract all the dust and debris.

Check with the yard if they have some sort of stand you can attach the boat to and then angle the boat sideways. That way you would be able to work on the bottom of the hull from the side instead of crawling under it. 👍

To be honest David I never thought of telling you to walk away from Twiggy. The plus side to you doing this work is you will know exactly the condition of the boat after all the repairs are done instead of buying another boat and questioning it's condition. As for the rails on the front you might want to call around the other boat yards and see if they have a wreck of your model and it might hav it's rails in the right shape for you at a reasonable price. Cheers from across the pond

Compared to some of the boat projects on KZread I think Twiggy shouldn't be too much trouble, work it in stages and you'll end up with a great boat at the end. I'm sure there are some fibreglass experts out there who would be happy to give some guidance, and having seen your camper videos I know the interior is well within your capabilities.
