32. ALL ALONE at Shipwreck Beach | Best beach in Greece? | Sailing to Zakynthos

This week on Kawai we sail in to Vathy on Ithaca where we shelter from the forecasted storms and strong winds. The forecast of storms is correct and we are hit with 50-60 knots for 25-30 minutes. During the mayhem Kawai is struck during the storm by another boat who had anchored too close. Fortunately we have fenders out and there is no damage to Kawai.
We leave Ithaca and sail towards Zakynthos. The sailing is hit and miss during the trip as we put the sails up and down constantly. The 40 nm trip is extremely picturesque. The west coast of Zakynthos has striking cliffs, large cave and green hilltops. During the sail Jase also catches a couple of tuna.
We reach Shipwreck beach at lunchtime and the bay is spectacular. The water is a perfect blue and amazing swimming conditions. We spend a couple of hours on Kawai, swimming, diving and taking in the scenery. We eventually take the tender ashore and are the last remaining people on the beach.
Unfortunately the swell picks up so we leave Ship wreck beach at 8pm and head for Keri in southern Zakynthos. We anchor at midnight and wake to a beautiful calm anchorage.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

Well. Greece with it's 16.000 km of wonderful coastlines, so yes wonderful beaches and video's you have when you sail! But Greece has so much more. It's 80% mountains and breathtaking landscapes as a result and then the combination of coastlines, 32% forests, 6000 islands around the wonderful mainland, highest biodiversity in Europe, and so on Greece is a outdoor hiking/botanic/winter and mountain heaven. It's a shame that Greece is advertised for mostly it's incredible history and wonderful culture, exceptional food, a rough 25 islands and some parts of the mainland. But 95% of Greece is still fully unexplored for most tourists. And while this 95% hosts an incredible and spectacular beauty in so many ways.

I live in NZ, now retired, my wife and I have a camper bus and travel a lot all round our beautiful country’s for my suggestions on places to see on your way back to Turkey, I assume you winter over in either Bodrum or Marmaris, There are so many gems along the way, but Milos is worth a stop, hire a scooter and visit the moon rocks,of course Santorini is a must if you haven’t been there, the safest marina is on the south coast bit of a tricky entrance but sailing in the caldera with the spectacular cliffs is quite special, we normally rent a car and explore the Island especially Oia at the northern end. But my personal favourite Island is Symi over near Rhodos, the main harbour town of Symi is spectacular,at the southern end is a very large sheltered anchorage at Panormitis, the Monastery is a must see, another spectacular Monastery is on Amorgos if that is not too far out of your way best after leaving Santorini heading back to Turkey, Lots of other little gems but you would need several years to explore them all, it has taken me many years and talking with locals to find all these hidden gems, my clients loved the fact that we went off the beaten track away from the cruise ships.

We were lucky at Santorini 3 - 4 Bf on broad reach going there from Eos under 10 - 10 blue sky We left early from Eos so were there in 2 hours Upon entry we furled jib and left main And motored through caldera Took 2 hours to get through: impressive Bit busy with cruise ships, tenders and tourist catamarans, not an issue Then anchored in marina on South side Acceptable but not real fun ( we ran aground in channel although only 1.85 m draft) Since it was sandy, no issue getting out backwards If you missed the nice weather on your previous passage with the boat I would highly recommend you plan to do it again It is a real stunner Especially if you realise there are thousands of tourists enviously looking down on you And you don’t have to compete with them for taxis or souvenirs 😀 ( just adds that little extra to the experience)👍 Chat with you later again All the best Be safe

My parents came form Newfoundland, they have a fisherman background and they had a saying keep the large fish and throw the small fish to live another day. Today the fish are smaller and harder to find and having smaller limits. The problem is the smaller the fish has smaller eggs this means the fish species is stunted growth and may never see there formal size. Today's ideas say throw back the bigger fish and keep the smaller ones. Tuna is a fish that hunts for other fish so it picks up toxins so the bigger the tuna gets the greater the risks so eat the smaller ones.

How long was your Vathi to Navagio Bay leg? Looks like you had a decent reach on the way down? :) Any suggestions on where best to anchor in the bay? Looks rolly! How was the boulder situation? Surprised at the lack of chart data considering the popularity of this destination! Keri looks like the only decent anchorage nearby post visit but not much use in a Southerly + turtle nature reserve and Ag. Nikolaos looks a bit industrial? Did you have any other bolt holes planned in reserve? Doing the same passage this year with my better half so any pointers appreciated :) Fair Winds!

Hi Alex, how are you going? We spent 7 days from when we left Ithica to Navarino Bay. We spent 3 days in Zakythos and although we didn't have a specific plan if the winds came strong from the South, we could have stayed at the marina. We didn't have a particular time frame so could just check the weather forecast and leave when it looked like we had a good window. Usually the winds blow from the North during the summer months so Keri was a safe anchorage. You are required to Anchor a minimum 100m off Keri and had no problems with the boulders, however I would anchor in daylight as there are many in the area. At Shipwreck Bay we anchored pretty far out off the shore and tendered in. The bottom was sand and weed and unless you anchor pretty close you won't have any problems. We anchored in 13m and snorkelled to make sure she was locked in :). The bay was really rolly!!!! We also visited Olympia and the anchorage we stayed at was great on the way to Navarino. Do you have Navionics? It is really helpful when planning anchorages. If you have further specific questions, I am happy to help, just ask :) Chat soon
