"Component separation" - This is when the core and jacket completely separate from one another. What is displayed here is considered "core-washing". ALL expanding bullets (whether bonded or not) with a lead core display this characteristic to various degrees dependent upon multiple factors... such as impact velocity, bullet weight, bullet design, impact material(s), etc. etc. Traditional cup-and-core bullets are the most common candidates of component separation. This is most commonly caused by pushing these bullets at magnum class speeds upon impact. They can and will, literally turn themselves inside out, ejecting the core from the jacket. Traditional cup-and-core bullets are designed for best results when utilized in standard cartridges at standard velocities... such as your .308 Winchester. The problem is most often encountered when this bullet type is pushed at speeds beyond 3000fps at the muzzle. Consider that the "cap" or limit. These bullets then get a bad reputation as being unreliable because some hunter uses them in his 300 Weatherby Magnum or whatever, to shoot a 100lb deer at 15yds, and it looks like the deer was hit by a bomb upon impact, yet it runs off. This is where a hunter needs to consider multiple variables based upon a set of parameters in choosing a bullet design. Range, game type(s), caliber, MV's, impact velocities, etc. The Accubond will perform as intended at MV's far beyond 3000fps. It is a superior bullet designed as a kind of "do-all" bullet for mixed bag hunts where a variety of game types may be, or will be encountered. This bullet is an excellent choice for practically every game animal hunted, with the exception of Africa's BIG dangerous game. However a competent rifleman using an appropriate caliber and bullet weight could kill any game animal that walks the earth with the AB. The BT is a very fine "pill" for whitetail-sized game. However, the above mentioned factors that apply to traditional "cup-and-core" bullets apply here. The BT is also one that has earned a bad reputation via improper usage, and will "spit" it's core if pushed past it's limits. For anyone serious about bullets, or just a "bullet-nut" or junkie like myself... then I HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy (or renting from a library) of "Rifle Bullets for the Hunter a Definitive Study". It's written by multiple authors in conjunction: Richard Mann, Ron Spomer, Bryce Towsley, John Haviland, Craig Boddington, and John Barsness. This book is a gold-mine of bullet knowledge and information.

I paid less than $30 for this book and it was still available 6 months ago at the time I posted my comment. At "$200.00" a copy for a book that is now out of print according to the Amazon website, you sir and anyone else that pays $200 for a copy would be an idiot. How about doing your research first, before posting what would be considered an out-dated comment. You are the one who obviously appears to be the "know-it-all dumbphuk".

@Michael Neely Not sure how you came to the conclusion that I support punching tiny holes through deer from my comment? I use bullets that perform exactly as you've described while leaving both an entrance and exit hole. The exit hole is usually anywhere from a Quarter to Half-Dollar sized. I want maximum internal damage to the vital organs and a good blood trail in the event they run.

Good points all around. For some reason, the 165 grain Ballistic Tip shot most poorly of the over a dozen different bullets out of my Ruger .30-06, no better than 1.5" @ 100 yards. Meanwhile, the others all shot better, in the case of the 165 grain Barnes TTSX and the 180 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter Spitzer, right at1" at the same distance.

With tough animals like elk or real tough moose the accubond has an advantage although it’s slight. The ballistic tip bullets have been taking bull elk for over 40 years or so

Your video on the Winchester Supreme NBT 168gr displays component separation. And this is from a .308 Winchester! I personally believe choosing the heaviest weight for caliber is the best choice when using the NBT. Performance of the NBT was stellar in this video with 180gr same caliber.

These performed exactly as advertised. BT weight retention of 78% and AB had 86%. That 78% is damn good for a bullet that has a lot of internet myth about it blowing apart. The new BTs are redesigned with a thicker tapered jacket. With the results here, even a 165g would perform well over what is needed. The problem is when ppl try to take a tiny-for-caliber bullet and push it to crazy speeds (well over 3000k).

I would love to see a video like this with the accubond LR and the Berger vld hunting.

Actually, only the back 2/3 of the accubond are bonded. The front 1/3 s not, and that is by design to mimic the partition performance and penetration.

Dwayne Johnson this isn’t correct. The entire bullet is bonded. The jacket is thinner toward the front of the bullet and gets gradually thicker moving down the bullet.

Actually he's correct. Nosler considered making a tipped partition years ago but kept the original partition as is and designed the Accubond. It was designed to retain about 60% of it's weight similar, to the partition. John Barsness, who has inside connections and toured their facility as a well known writer/handloader has spoken about this several times.

Most people think the Accubond is a fully bonded bullet, but it is not. It was made to replicate the partition's terminal performance but have a much higher BC. The forward portion of the bullet is not bonded while the majority of the rest is. This aids in expansion at lower velocities, just like the partition. But invariably leads to some fragmentation and weight loss.

Yes you have reason accubond is not full bonded,i test the fusions bullet,this one is full bonded and is the best,i testing the accubond,BTIP, Fusions in my 300 wsm it,s Fusions the best for me and more accurate to the others at very high velocity!

Best I have seen is Federal powder 2640 with nosler projectiles Partition j accubond In General if If the projectile moves too fast it will penetrate too deep before opening up Though you want to keep the velocity above 2600 fps to assure heavy hydrostatic shock below 2400 fps poor hydrostatic shock characteristics begin to apear especially on certain types of projectiles I do not like synthetic tip projectiles I have seen too many redirected flight paths with them I find the Partition opens up faster and goes as deep as any My favorite load is the 220 grain Round nose tip hornady round I use it in heavy bush from a tree stand in this scenario I shoot no more than 75 yards I use 180 grain nosler partition when I hunt in my other stand over looking a pond

In any case, very good performance for that bullet. Standard ballistic tip definitely comes apart. Not sure if nosler is making them anymore.

I use a 300 Weatherby the ballistic tip explodes in the deer the accubond punching straight through it depends on how fast you're pushing the bullet I prefer accubond in my 300 Weatherby

Seems to me that the ballistic tip will have at least more shock due to the small fragments what kills me is that hammer bullets claim to fame is the fact that they lose petals every time and somehow a ballistic tip expansion is a draw back

The pieces off the accubond on impact is probably the tip which will shed. Looks like it to me.

after much debate with guys on the net ESPECIALLY on the nosler forum... saying the Ballistic tip should only be used on thin skinned game.... I tend to lean towards heavier critters. The accubond and the ballistic tip seem to run neck and neck as far as expansion and penetration. IF the ballistic tip fragments as they say then it would penetrate as much as a bonded bullet. BUT I'm sure there would be an answer for that. Staying away from bone is the norm when hunting any big game, if off shots are necessary then go with a stouter bullet.

The 165s hit harder n open up more violent. Be surprised what col hundred more fps does to expansion for the better

I don't really think much can be taken from this test. The accubond will perform much better when encountering bone than the ballistic tip. The problem with ballistic tips in the field has never come from perfect broad side shots, which this will simulate. If you had put a cow femur or something like that in there I believe you would have seen a much bigger difference. The Ballistic Tip would have come completely apart. Unless you are talking a solid copper bullet you actually don't want 100% weight retention from a bonded hunting bullet. Bullets like the Hornady Interbond and Fusion have higher weight retention as the whole front of the bullet stays together causing a much larger mushroom but reduced penetration. Those bullets only penetrate about 18-20" in bare ballistics gel where an accubond will go deeper because it doesn't mushroom as much. The front actually breaks loose a little and creates a smaller mushroom. Usually about 2x the original diameter. While a bullet like the fusion will expand to close to 3x the original diameter. On paper it looks nice to have over 90% weight retention but the accubond will punch deeper despite less weight retention. It was designed to perform like the partition in the field but with a higher BC for better downrange accuracy and trajectory.

strat nailed it, other bonded bullets might retain more weight and mushroom wider and look prettier on a magazine add but the accubond does frag some and that is what helps it kill faster , it doesnt mushroom wide because that helps it penetrate deeper this is my favorite bullet, right with the partition.,

I'll take the accubond.

Out to 200yd I'll take the plain jane, decades old remington 180gr round nose core lokt. I've tried all the other wiz bang loads and always come back to the round nose bullets for game. Where I am, 200yds is a shot you'll probably only get a few times in your life because of the terrain & heavy brush & timber here in NH. At that range you gain nothing with these Spitzer boat tail bullets

168 grain eldm will deliver more energy into the animal than a 300 win mag with a 180 grain core lokt.

@@Dcm193 I don't use a .300, I'm talking .308 short barrel too, 18.5in barrel on a ruger rsi international. I'm not sure how much more dead a deer can be after he's hit with the combo I use. I've never had 1 complain

Damn.. 180 grains for a .308... what are you hunting, moose? a 150 grain would do more damage to something soft like a deer.

I use 61gr of WMR in Fireformed 30-06 cases. Neck sized with a collet die. Bullet is 180gr Nosler ballistic tip. 2800fps chronograph. S.D.57 M.O.A 100yards .25in C.O.A.L 3.194

The Accubond seems to create greater terminal damage than the ballistic tip!

I shoot 150 SST's because they blow up on deer and shred vitals. They will reliably open up on deer at 300-400. Ive shot a few deer over the years with bonded 165 deer thugs. They blow right through but are a lot more than I need. 180's are for elk and bears I guess.

The only things these two bullets have in common is that they are both bullets and they are both manufactured by Nosler..Plastic tipped bullets are just the latest marketing "FAD"..Personally I don't think the Accubond is anywhere near as good of a Big Game bullet as the Partition. It's Nosler's answer to manufacturing a cheaper bullet with the intention of being able to tell everyone it penetrates as good as the Partition but ballistically more efficient. It might fly a little flatter but when comparing penetration and performance against hard targets, the Partition is better.....MUCH BETTER...I have seen Accubonds "spit their cores" just as much as any Ballistic Tip... I have personally seen Partition's penetrate the length of big Deer and Elk smashing through pelvic bone on the way out the far end.

Plastic tips are a fad? When you die someday plastic tips will still be around. Why? because they work. Saying they are just a fad is like somebody 100 years ago saying that spitzers were just a fad.

K N I guess he must be one of those guys who only carries one bullet around in a rubber case while hunting.i like the partition but could not keep tip from deforming.Accubond is good in that respect.have used accubonds for ten years ,partition thirty.like both,use both would not change.

While you are entitled to "your opinion", that doesn't make what you say true. The Ballistic Tip and Accubond have everything in common, except for the bonding process. Ogives, boattails, jackets, cores etc. I've used Accubonds quite a bit on deer and dear, and haven't seen one get stopped yet. Thank you for informing the rest of the shooting world how wrong they are for choosing the Accubond. Glad we have guys like you to correct us all.

Since I posted this (it's been 7 years and a whole bunch of deer) I have come to enjoy the performance of a .308 125 grain Accubond. It essentially turns your 7.62x51 into a .270 with more impact energy. Within Its limitations, the Accubond is a pretty good bullet. Wish they were cheaper*
