300bhp MG Abingdon Edition - Sensational Performance with 1960's Charm !

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Let's face it, classic cars look beautiful but aren't normally great to drive, aren't that fast and let's not talk about going around corners and stopping. However, The MG Abingdon Edition by Frontline Developments has a modern engine, big brakes and new suspension...and it's AWESOME !

I have 5 MGBs, but ALL are 1.8L (one modified with racing cam, weber outlaw, and electronic ignition and overdrive), but NONE with 300hp! I need one of these and am planning to get one as a retirement car!! :)

I am so old that I remember them as new. What a hugely different world of cars it was then. Your report prompted lots of thoughts. Mostly two for just now. Quality and reliability were major issues with such a lot of cars. Japan transformed both, then Germany caught up. We never did really. The second was simplicity. Your demonstration MG game me a halcyon vision of how things might have been. A beautifully crafted and built car with its focus on driving pleasure. Engineering first and the rest second. It's nice to dream. Loved the review.

I too remember when they were new. I had one (two actually). Dad had a Healey 100-6. Lots more. (We were a racing family.) I still prefer a restored original, with an 1800 cc carbureted engine and old-school 4-speed tranny. LBC's were not built for speed, there's a much deeper purpose. Love mine.

When I started watching this, I thought it was just another KZread 'showoff my car chops' video, but after a few minutes I was hooked on the professional video and narrator work, very top level work. and of course the beautiful car seems to be a very well sorted vehicle, a sublime classic to be driven as a sports car should be. Wow then he turns into Stewart, the video captures the drive extremely well and ....if there ever was a sports car commercial made that really showed the 'sports' in driving, this is it.

Fantastic review, particularly of how things could have been. I’m a Porsche guy, but have always said the reason most of us drive sports cars is because of the British cars of the ‘60s. I still remember borrowing my friend’s Triumph TR-4 and driving it to the New Jersey shore via the back roads........it was just exhilarating! That actually led me to motorcycles and eventually Porsches as my daily drivers for the past 40+ years. Thanks for the wonderful memories that your video brought to mind.

I absolutely love your enthusiasm and big wide grin for the MGB Roadster - my old 1975 one in Green, I had as a 22 year old and bought for £850, was still on the road until 2006 (I’m 56 now) Now on a SORN, no doubt sitting in some barn somewhere, waiting for me to win the lottery and rescue it, and the youthful fun I had in it until I sold it to buy expedition gear to go representing England on Operation Raleigh in 1987. Great memories I’d love to realise again someday in LAO55P !

It was just reliability issues, build quality being threatened from advanced scalable robotics and mass production that eclipsed them. Management and labor issues further exacerbated this. Stock engine, the 1974 MGB was 79 HP. Unless you have diddled with a cam, ported head, increased compression, etc you have 79 HP.. My 1964 is stove stock and has the original 3 main engine in top condition ... 150 lbs compression straight across , properly tuned, still has its original 98 HP. Fast, fun, cheap. Agreed, increased HP is not a necessity. While the Abingdon is impressive, but defeats the purpose of the original B. Go buy a new MIATA. Better built than the Abingdon, at least the body panels fit, and considerably less money and a better exhaust note. Far more reasons to buy the MIATA if considering an Abingdon such as , modern SAFETY. I'll reserve comments on the boring, pretentious, contradictory video.

@@melindamanthey2757 The stock engine in 3 and 5 main bearing is around 95BHP and only US spec cars were downtuned in the 70s. You've got 150 Newton Meters, not lbs which is 110. The car in the video is £100k including VAT, which is around $130k not $100k. If you utilising the power of a 300+bhp per tonne car and hit a lamp post, the air bags in an MX5 won't save you. Don't think you can compare the panel fit of an original MG, with what is turned out in this video. Whilst I do understand and appreciate that you have to produce content which covers a broad church of vehicle types, I do look forward to seeing a lot more content with some classics, featuring both original versions and re-engineered examples such as this excellent MG. A good mgb is a joy to drive, a poor one is a shed, same with most old cars. It was a sports car for everyman, now it's a classic for everyman. What Frontline can do with the B and Midgets is amazing. However, you can get decent HP from the old gargly, raspy long stroke and the 3 litre 6 and 3.5 Rover V8 are excellent engines. So there are choices for fans of this gorgeous car. Great vid and car.

I have a beautiful 1971 MGB, I can’t afford to swop the engine but watching your video has clinched the decision to upgrade to a Mazda gear box. I upgraded the brakes and added power steering in 2016. It’s due a bit of tlc, sort out some minor rust and respray in the near future. Love the idea of heated seats. I’m assuming that if you upgrade your classic MGB to one like you demonstrated you forfeit the exemption of road tax; but if you can afford £100,000 I guess you are not going to worry about paying Road fund tax. Recognised your run, one of my favourite local rides. I live in Abingdon and often take the long way round to visit my daughter in West Berkshire.

If you're strapped for cash, consider some POR 15 paint. They make a paint that bonds to rust, good for those places where appearance is less important, but preservation of metal is. If you are preserving the car and can't afford to do it like a concours restoration, be assured that the preservation of the car justifies doing what you can afford. The perfect can often be the enemy of the good. Leave the perfection to the next owner. At least he'll have something to work with. My best friend has done around 20 affordable restorations, with some corners cut, but the outcomes were solid both in body and in mechanical aspects, starting from barn finds and the like, classics that stood a good chance of getting crushed if he hadn't saved them.
