When you want to produce 2000HP from a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine it is logical that you’re going to lean heavily on your turbo setup. Shane Tecklenburg, the Mazworkz Racing Engines and Tekno Toyz team reached this goal with their MoTeC controlled 88mm turbo setup some time ago, but when reaching for 3000HP it was evident a single was not going to cut it.
Shane and Andre explain some of the cooling and packaging issues around large single turbo setups before explaining how the current 380 PSI capable compound system consisting of 2 large turbochargers, which technically due to pressure ratios operate at around 30 PSI a piece, are feeding one smaller turbo which combined enables them to push past those 2000HP limits and reach higher power outputs.
Also discussed are the advantages and disadvantages of intercooling while running methanol fuel and the decision process around it as well as how you control boost in a compound turbo setup and the parameters that must be considered to ensure the boost is kept at the target levels.
Lastly, Shane shares his goal of hitting 5 seconds with this 4 cylinder SR20 based engine in the race with Jett Racing to be the first to do so.

IAT's 5 degrees above ambient is probably the most impressive thing in my mind. The engineering involved in those charge coolers is incredible. Think about how long the intercooler actually has to cool the air that is rushing past it, literally fractions of a second.

Diesel have been using compound turbo setup for ages, most stock semi truck diesel engines run upward of 65-80 psi and run 70.000lbs injectors , like he said nothing new really. But on a Gas engine its tricky to setup and get running properly. 3000 Hp on a small 4 cyl is damn impressive.

Its tricky to get the correct size turbos even on a diesel. Dudes have been doing it long enough that the maths are known much better in diesel applications.
@geluix69

RedmistAU well also diesels do not burn the same fuel and do not have have an ignition system. Diesels need compression to ignite the fuel , whereas gas engines to much compression is very bad for detonation unless your burning nitromethane.

I wanted to see the layout Nissan navara run twin turbos and, correct me if I’m wrong (probable) they run sequentially, sort of parallel, small turbo at low revs changes to large turbo at high rpm I think this set up is turbos that directly feed each other in series Would have been great to see how the exhaust was plumbed

Fantastic vid with great info on his compound setup. This setup is designed to run super high psi for extreme hp which I haven't come across before. Great stuff!

I love how he talks about how impossible running a 5 sounded years ago. And now they’re knocking on the door of 5’s. Yet they had to turn down the power they could possibly make. I wonder in how many years 380psi is not gonna be enough just how if you talked about running 75-80 psi 10-15 years ago on a 4cyl they would of though you were crazy. But now we’re their. When will we actually use 300psi? But in all seriousness 3000hp on a 4cyl is absolutely astonishing. That’s 750 HP PER CYLINDER. I struggle to make that with 8 cylinders 😂.
I like hearing your interviews, I vote they compound charge a Yamaha r1 engine and race that. They will definitely get the rpms they want. Professionalism at its finest and follow up questions on point! Great work, I subscribed weeks ago.

I always wondered how they tuned the wastegates for compound turbos. Well now I know. That engine setup is going to be a heavy hitter for 5's. I hope they make it
@dj4monie
4 жыл бұрын
The assumption is the more turbos the more complicated it should be. Kevin Jewer's setup is the same, takes the signal from the top of the port. He went from air-to air, then methanol which is what Jett is going to air to water which is what Shane explains the benefit over the added weight. Another 900 whp offsets the 80-100 lbs added, very easily. Actually more people are figuring that out, just make more power.
Amazing stuff!
Woah that's cool I see compound setups all the time on trucks and tractors running diesel... but on a 4cyl making 3k hp that's just insane!
I remember Norwood did a total billet engine for an Acura integta running two Y2K turbos. Interesting article. However this compound setup is something else, ShaneT will definitely figure it all out.
