I just picked up a ZZK 602 chambered in 416 rem mag. Its my first big bore rifle, quite a step up from the 9.3x62. Hope to get to Africa one day.

If I had to choose I'd pick the 404 Jeffrey. Seems to be the best compromise between stopping power and recoil.

I have an idea for an informative video. Something lost in a lot ballistics is the importance of barrel legnth of a rifle. It might be cool to show some comparisons of ballistic performances and see how those numbers change as barrel legnth increases, or mainly, decreases. I was surprised to know that a 6.5 grendel shot from a 24" barrel is almost the same ballistics as a 6.5 creedmoor out of a 20" barrel. Similar situations are found with 6.5 creed and 6.5 PRC. Also the 308, 30.06, and 300 win. And I'm sure plenty more examples of this. But I can imagine lots of new shooters might think differently of the compact barrel legnths if they knew the impact it has on the ballistics. Might be interesting?

Exactly, and especially if you throw a sound moderator in the mix. A 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger with 20" barrel does the same as 375 HH and 416 Rigby with 24" barrel.

Thank you very much for another excellent video with Kevin . I've never heard either of you two gentlemen ever mention "dwell time" in regards to possible killing power with lower velocities. Is there anything too that ??? Regards and thank you again Kevin.

What a great video. I watched it from start to finish. What a wealth of knowledge and information your guest is. Will you do a show on the . 500's? Also I've heard from two PH's that say there is a noticeable difference in the animals initial reaction when hit from a 500 or 600 that they don't see with the 458's. If you could ask the good doctor that question I would love to hear his experience.

I think it's worth considering that these rounds are going to be shot by normal human beings - that is, that the free recoil energy cannot be ignored as a component of their effectiveness. While I'd admit that, say, a .458 Winchester Magnum isn't the most powerful round shown above, it does have one thing going for it: it clobbers the shooter's shoulder less than the others, and may - as a result - be more readily available for a follow-on shot. Two well-placed shots have a value compared to one more powerful (particularly if the one shot is less precisely placed because of recoil sensitivity/flinch) shot. Yes, the more powerful rounds have a benefit, but I think there's also something to be said for a cartridge that is well and good enough, that can be more easily handled in the field.

I've had my eye on a Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger, but at 7.8lbs it sounds like it's 2lbs too light. The cartridge looks efficient and ideal for a .416 caliber though.

Roosevelt was a fan of the .405 Winchester. There are documented cases of American hunters taking their sharps rifles to Africa.

You're not wrong about the 405 Winchester or the Sharps rifles. Like I said at the beginning of this episode, that's not what those cartridges were designed for though and that is why I did not include them. Kevin and I touch on some of those cartridges in this episode though: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpetscyDacfSacY.html

I find the 400 H&H to be a interesting cartridge, I may have to have Parkwest Arms build me a Dark continent in that caliber!

I had a 416 rem mag in Winchester model 70 rehabbed and debarreled to 400 H&H. It shoots 2375 with a 25-inch dogmas barrel and shoots 1/2 inch groups with Barnes TSX. I took a 45 inch Cape buffalo with it
