30 Years of the Jaguar XJ40 - Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Jaguar XJ40 celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2016. We take a look at a 1988 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign and talk about its connection to Jaguar founder William Lyons. And to celebrate its 30th Anniversary, we take it on a big road trip... what better way to mark the occasion than to take the big Jag on a big road trip. Watch our film to find out where we went and how it got on.

    Thanks a lot Dan! The colour really does suit the Xj40 lines. And it looks even better in the flesh. I think people are slowly coming round the the Xj40. Yes they have their problems but it was a milestone car for Jaguar.

    My XJ40 sits in the garden been there for 3 years off road now, still clean and would start up first time. I bought it in 2004 with only 74,000 miles on the clock, parked it up in 2016 with 106.000 on the clock. Mines a 1990 "G" plate, none of that rubbish British leyland digital clock display that always went wrong. Mines a 4.0 litre with sports button, very fast car. July 2019 now and might get back on the road soon :)

    Could be time to get yours back on the road. Prices are slowly climbing for XJ40s. Mine actually popped back up for sale recently. Been tempted to take it back. Do miss that smooth straight six! Would like to try a 4.0 with the sport option. See how it compares to the 3.6.

  • @TaketotheRoad

    When the XJ40 came out they had square headlights. Which weren’t well received. I think it was a couple of years into production before they offered the twin round headlights as an option. So you could go for the more traditional Jag look. I think a few mods are required to swap the square for the round.

    I respect the XJ40 and of course Sir Lyons who was ahead of his time. However the X300 and X308 were the evolution of the XJ40 platform and I believe the last of the true steel bodied Jaguars until 2004 when Ford switched to the all aluminum X350 "super-taurus" (I hate that thing). However's Ford's influence on Jag was mostly positive. They left most of the styling and engineering to Jag (the AJ-V8 was produced in house by Jaguar, only their 3rd mass produced design.) and infused cash, modern manufacturing techniques and electronics upgrades but tried to steer clear of what made Jaguar Jaguar. Heck Ford lost money they invested so much. Can you argue with the beautiful XK8 or XJRs be it inline 6 or V8? Jaguar had the fastest sedan in the world for a while while retaining knockout styling inside and out with a 3x increase in reliability from the '88 XJ40. Ford put an edge back on Jaguar not seen since the E-type.

  • @TaketotheRoad

    @TaketotheRoad

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for that Tran! Yes the XJ40 layed the foundations for what was to come. There was Ford influence in the model once they took over a bit later but they didn’t get to produce a Ford specific model until quite late. By which time as you say they’d invested and lost a lot of money. The writing was on the wall by that stage for Fords tenure. I ended up selling my XJ40 and I miss it. I recently acquired a tidy 98 XJ8 3.2 but it blew a head gasket, radiator leaked, power steering pump failed, intermittent alarm fault, horn broke and then the head lining dropped..... it was a dog! Wish I’d kept the XJ40!!!!

    Agree with you mate. As soon as the XJ8 went bang I thought of the less complex AJ6.
