I really like Stelios Kiosses' approach to helping hoarders. I hope Alex and his family are continuing on.

Yes me too. Kiosses's explation about hoarders and their mental issues made me understand my mom now. She is a hoarder. After years of resentment, arguement, yelling and hurting each other etc, I feel sorry for my mom and now starting to embrace her for better mother-daugther relationship 😊

I think my favorite part of this episode was that despite the "churning" of items to another space, Stelios did not bring it up while he was congratulating Alex on his steps forward. I kept expecting it to come up, but it was entirely positive and that was a nice feeling!

There's something very sweet about Alex. He's eyes are sad. Hope Alex can do it.

I hope Alex is getting happier each day. He had been in a deep depression. You can do it!

Perfect choice of words: “ professional declutterers have chosen to take Birdman Lawrence under their wing. This show , dealing with difficult and painful issues is still able to inject a little bit of humor. Well done.

Lawrence collects so many beautiful things, only problem was he had so many! I also appreciated how nicely and neatly everything was displayed.

Lawrence has such a natural sense for composition. He could be a designer.

I love how Stelios works with people. He is so gentle and compassionate. Alex was in a really bad way here and his family doesn't seem to realize that, especially the blonde daughter. But the wife seems to have learned a bit. Alex needs more real friends and more cooking lessons!

Alex is such a sweetheart. He has struggled a lot.

See, there’s such a big difference between what this show does, and what the American show “Hoarders” does. This show actually takes the time to give the person therapy and doesn’t rush them to throw everything out in 3 days. Those shows are chaotic and stressful, these are not.

The American show usually features people who have been given eviction notices and will literally be kicked out if they don't clear things out right away. It also adds to the drama (which gives the show more views and therefore makes more money). I wish that all hoarders had the opportunity to have a therapist like Stelios to help guide them through the process and heal mentally.

This is the better way but the American show only focus on the people who have a deadline do to police or family and that adds to it as a hoarder myself the American show is so stressful and I get mad at how they are doing things

My thoughts exactly! The American shows claim to take a psychological approach, but really often end up attacking, harassing and shaming the hoarder and making them into the villain. The American shows lose sight of the mental illness to focus on cleaning out the hoard in record time. I understand that the situations being dealt with are usually extremely unsafe and unhealthy but these people have serious disorders. I sometimes wonder if removing them from their homes is preferred so they can be treated apart from their hoard.

If it would be considered a crime, you know how it would go, just like every other law... Only attractive and wealthy who are born in country of this law would benefit from it, while poor, sick and/or foreign would be accused of lies, outcast further and thrown around heartless mental health care and pushed to any of the [...]cides.

@@froggy9191 Family members who are frustrated, concerned, at their wits end should have a support group where they can learn how to get through to those with a hoarding disorder to help them, or stage an intervention.

@@eileenworth7862 So sorry to learn of the circumstances around your brother’s passing. He is free of his mental and physical prison now so I hope that you have been able to come to terms with it all. I would love to help people with hoarder issues, but I am deathly afraid of insects so I can’t see myself ever doing that sort of thing.

The cooking class was so sweet. Made me cry a little.

What two beautiful, gentle souls🙏hope 2021 finds them well and happy.

I love this doctor.

Alex is the most soft spoken person I ever watched in hoarding series...hope he can be progressive more and more.Go Sir you can do it 💪

Those birds ornaments are gorgeous to be honest.

Lawrence’s collection is beautiful.

OMG. This is such an emotional episode. I really feel for Alexa and his beautiful family. They have been so patient.

I really enjoy these episodes over the American version because it really attempts to tackle the underlying cause and address maladaptive behaviour plus they do it over an extended time frame. I realise the US version usually deals with more severe cases with a time frame but for someone with a severe psychological disorder that kind of pressure is often counterproductive, especially as a long term solution.

As for a Lawrence maybe open a bird museum and aviary. Leave all the bird figures there and keep your home a home.

Alex is so touching. I feel how fragile he is. ❤

Alex needs more than therapy, I think. He's really struggling and you can actually see it physically in him.

Does anyone else start cleaning and organizing things while watching this?

Lawrence needs counselling too. You can't just change him by getting rid of his stuff. Alex is deeply entrenched in his own thoughts of the past . I think they both need to be taken away from their surroundings and do other things for awhile. Get out of their own heads

I thought Stelios’ insight into the origins of Alex’s hoarding… that Alex was trying to keep the positive feelings alive of his older, doting parents was spot on. Have you met others with collecting impulses? Comic books? Sports Memorabilia? Collecting began in childhood with a parent, grandparents, maybe older siblings or extended family. The happy time when life stretched out it seemed forever. Today it is The Farm. Or the storage locker. The hoarded house and property. If you are lucky, you can get good therapy. If not, you continue to hoard in vain, perhaps, like Alex, ignoring the love around you. Bravo, Stelios!

If Alex's parents had truly been doting -- if they had formed real and deep emotional connections to Alex, if they had made him feel cherished and safe -- then he wouldn't have become a hoarder. Tremendous emotional pain from childhood creates the hoarding impulse (there wasn't enough love, there wasn't enough stability). Listen again, and you'll hear that Alex said his father took him to the toyshop weekly perhaps to compensate for all the things that he (an older father) couldn't do for his son. I'd bet $1000 that his father was unable -- not bc of age but bc of his own psych. issues -- to be a truly reassuring, loving figure for his son.

@@dw999 we can’t know that! And why do you assume there was emotional pain? And a lack of emotional connection? That he was not cherished? That is going waaay too far. We’re not talking about a serial killer. We’re talking about a guy who fell in love with stuff because that’s what parents his age could engage in with him. Had they been younger, they might have been sports enthusiasts. I thought Alex fit the nerd profile. Distracted by too many independent interests. Not practically suited for family life. But no trauma legacy to pass on.

​@@Propfaqs I studied to become a therapist (chose not to practice, but did the coursework), plus I know a fair amount about hoarding. I can understand your being resistant to seeing beneath the surface of this -- a lot of people are in a lot of pain (that's why the world is a mess), and to face someone else's pain is to come uncomfortably close to one's own. But if we don't face the complexity of our emotions and our lives, then those feelings express themselves through destructive actions (such as hoarding). Just something to think about as you decide whether to start looking beneath the surface. Not to mention that Stelios himself makes clear, in every episode, that hoarding arises from a traumatic loss. That's some serious denial you're stuck in ...

Just started watching 2 minutes in and I can say good for Jackie for keeping that garbage out of the main house, because if she didn't he surely would of taken it over. Alex is not a bad person he just needs help. I do feel that he is extremely depressed 😔 I hope that he and his family can get the help that they all need. May God bless them all.

My parents were “ANTIQUE DEALERS”. hoarders, I had to clean out the house by my self because my sister was in a wheel chair. She needed the money from the sale of the house to care for herself. Truly she did. But that left me with m parents hoard of antiques in my home. We lost 2 rooms and the entire basement to my parents hoard. That was AFTER I sold off 2 , 1 ton trucks of the furniture. Thank god, but it took me 4 more years to sell off my parents antique hoard.

When the parents say “it’s beginning to be a problem”, shows that they don’t see how bad it is either. It began to be a problem probably 10 yrs ago. It’s now well into being a problem. Far far into being a problem. Crazy. The viewers can likely clearly see that the problem began a very long time ago. I understand how fantastic the doctor is, and that makes this show such a good one, but man, these calls for help should have happened many years ago. But, it is a very good show, and I completely agree with the other comment or who compared this one to the American one. The Brit’s are far more compassionate in all regards - in my opinion.

I wonder if Stelios considered that Alex may be autistic. The fixation to a routine is a very classic autistic trait, as is the pursuit of a very niche sort of hobby (called a special interest). Alex could very well be autistic, and his special interest could be recording TV programs. That could also be why he got to be so shut off from his family-- a lot of autistic people withdraw when they're not in the best mental state rather than seeking the comfort of others. I only say this because I myself am autistic and I do see myself in Alex. And, you know, the same could maybe be said of Lawrence as well, with his special interests being birds and thimbles. I'm getting autistic vibes from him too. And I generally do have a good radar about finding my fellow autistics. :)

Alex isnt on the spectrum, he looks more like depressed. Because of his childhood. Laurens is .

You can love and sympathize with the hoarder but it doesn't mean that you you can live in that environment. I know from personal experience that if you are overwhelmed by clutter and stuff and your married to a person that hoards or has loads of clutter...you yourself will go mad.

Stelios pleeeeeeeeeease write a book on this topic.

They are both truly precious people but I get the impression that they both may have ASD. Lack of emotional affect, detachment from people, hyper focused on special interest… all symptoms of ASD

Hoarding disorder is actually a type of OCD, believe it or not! That's why it's called compulsive hoarding-- it is indeed an obsessive compulsion. I'm also getting big autistic vibes from these gentlemen. I'm autistic myself, and I usually have a pretty good radar about it.

Alex’s wife also needs therapy as she is just as emotionally distant as he was. She didn’t connect with him emotionally anytime during this video, I thought she would have at least given him a hug at the end. Even during the meal she seemed to be bringing him down.

It's not her fault, he's pushed her away for so many years, how do you expect her to act? She's always been rebuffed, so she's gotten used to keeping her distance.

She looked hurt to find out that an used yogurt container can be more valuable to her husband rather than her, she understood it's his illness but you can still see the hurt in her eyes

The families who stick with their hoarders are amazing and tough people. What a saint Jackie is!

Alex may have developed bad thoughts if he doesn’t record everything. Like if he doesn’t do it, something bad will happen to him or the family. I’ve seen this in other OCD

The older hoarder's wife was a saint. I have to say the younger man was very neat and organised with his collection.

Alex really showed his love for his wife and daughter.

I love the bird sculptures, they're beautiful!

I see Lawrence does not live in earthquake country!!! I'd love to see his collection in a public museum. I'm another Lawrence...and I collect frog figurines, and some turtles and owls...I see many nice pieces in his collection...but my home has functional space...and I do thin out my collection as time goes on. I have a one in...one out slant on collecting, as I get on in years. I've sent to one of my ebay sellers many of my pieces I no longer want...she has gotten fair prices for them, glad to help her out, as ebay selling is her income.

I can’t even imagine. What if all those things are as precious to them as only very few things are to me. 🙄 that must me really stressful to them

Alex has the best storage boxes of any of the hoarders I've seen. I keep my yarn in that kind. But only three of them... it's a stash, not a hoard.

Awe, that was so touching when they sat down to dinner that Alex cooked.

I really liked this one.

Great show! The only thing I would have liked more would be if there were some focus on the compulsive acquiring that both hoarders and collectors have. The thrill of habitually hunting for their treasures is a major part of both ends of this spectrum. How does Dr. Kiosses treat this aspect of their condition?

I imagine it would be extra dangerous to roll a HOARDED car. You might end up upside down AND buried 😬😬😬

Poor alex their parents replace love with toys, they have all the money but couldnt give him the attention and love he needed, instead of that he recive material things

You're joking, right? She has zero insight -- zero. Instead of realizing that her hub was seriously depressed -- which is apparent to anyone with one iota of insight -- and realizing that he needed help decades ago, she felt sort of irritated about his hoarding until Stelios gave her a little insight. They're *profoundly* mismatched -- he's bright, melancholic, and inclined to see the complexity/depths of life, whereas she relies on cliches when speaking and has a superficial approach to the intricacy of human relationships, of being human. I suspect that part of his depression stems from realizing that he married the wrong person -- and that her refusal to look at the complexity of life is a dedicated attempt to keep pain at bay (she also married the wrong person -- she needed a nice, not-too-complicated, not-too-educated man).

It's lovely to see her constant support for him over the years paying off by him getting better. I hope the family has healed, they really deserve a quality family life.

Stelios’s approach is gentle and more likely to stay with the person rather than three days and expose everything whether the person is ready to deal with it in front of an audience! Especially, when they do it like tearing off a bandage in one go regardless of it being stuck on a scar! I am watching so I can deal with my own tendencies to collect too much! When I see my things accumulating I get uncomfortable!

Lawrence’s home wasn’t nasty or dirty he just had lots of collectibles

I have never felt so claustrophobic as when they show Laurence's house. It makes me really uncomfortable to even see it.

Alex is the first horder i have seen where there are actually things i would buy if he made a sale. I collect old English china and Faience. Think i saw some i wanted in his garage 🤣 I could be a horder too if i did not keep a strict grip on myself, and had more money to buy with. I got that possibility in mind all the time when thinking about buying something. I have to.

For a minute I thought they were going to play Mansun's Wide Open Space at 3:00. lmao

How does Alex's wife keep her part of the house so neat? Is he not allowed near her?

The stuff belongs to the hoarder and no one else, professional declutterer, has the right to take anything away without the hoarder's consent. It's an emotional tug of war, but you can't just come in an carry things off and expect the problem to be solved.

This seems like a better culture than here in the U S

Someone needs to show Alex how to use USB drives to record TV shows instead of using VHS tapes. That would save a lot of space. 😂

For press I think it may be connected to staying in touch with the world when you feel trapped yourself. Or just the urge to collect all of papers available. As for books, the stories can be used as a form of escapism and even tho they no longer read them or never did it's the possibility of escape or the sentiments that makes them buy it. Of course this are just my opinions but I thought I share 🤪

After seeing the Disney collector, it is difficult for me to see much difference between the collector and the hoarder. The collector can fall off that slippery slope of keeping the collection clean and the living space livable.

Lawrence should turn his house into a shop.

It’s really quite sad when you think of it. This is a man who feels like his life has no purpose. That’s why I think even if you’re well to do and you have the money to leave your children and support your children there needs to be a cut off point. They need to find their own way. Because if you’ve achieved nothing externally on your own then it’s like you’re a ghost in your own life.
